http://www.care2.com/causes/real-food/blog/medicinal-herbs-will-be-banned-in-the-european-union Sadly, this is planned for the European Union. Can the US be far behind??? It is my personal opinion that the drug companies are behind this!!! According to this article, this has been in the works for 6 years now. Why was it kept so quiet??? I went through this about 15-20 years ago. I was suffering from severe Depression & the meds the docs were giving me only made my problem worse!!! I heard on the news that St Johns Wort was good for Depression as proven by the German population & I bought a bottle out of desperation!!! SJW helped me tremendously at 90% less cost. Within the year, the pharma companies convinced the FDA to pull SJW from the market. Their logic was that it wasn't regulated & therefore wasn't safe. I NEVER once had an adverse reaction to herbal remedies; however, I can't say that to synthetic meds!!! Yes, synthetic meds have their place, but so do herbal meds. I'm s HUGE fan of using herbal remedies to take care of my problems & have been quite successful doing so. Actually, I've been successful enough my doctor researches herbal meds when I go to her with a problem & she seldom gives me a prescription opting for the all-natural route!!! What is your opinion of herbal meds being banned???

I'm of two minds about this. I'm all for natural meds but there are a lot of people out there that try to discourage people from getting proper medical cures. Take cancer, for example--they play on peoples' fears and encourage them to take their "miracle" natural cures rather than trust their doctors. People have lost their lives listening to charlatans rather than their physicians. I don't want anything to be banned but I do wish people would use some common sense and that can't be regulated by the government.

Cancer is the PERFECT argument for pharmaceuticals!!! As I said before...NOT all meds are bad!!!! I use a lot of herbal remedies as they work for me. When they don't work, I'm the first in a doctor's office to get help!!! We ALL should use some common sense. There are charlatans in every walk of life & it is OUR job to ferret them out!!! I just don't like the idea of a large corporation having reasonable prices cures banned just so they can overcharge us for something that may very well kill us also!!!!

I think the traditonal medication should be banned they are no good. The reason being is that it takes the immune system out of the equation and use medicine to fix the illness. eg. infections they eventually become immune to antibiotics and then become what they call mrsa. I had mrsa myself and the immune system does develop antibodies to fight the infection. Although it took over 2 years. I havn't had a sore now for over 3 years. With herbal medication it is a more natural alternative which is more like giving a boost to your immune system to help fight any illness. Traditional medications only seem to treat the illness while knocking your immune system down the drain. That is why traditional medication should be off the shelf.

I do NOT think ANYTHING should be banned!!! I think everything should remain available & let us use OUR own common sense as far as what is good for us & what isn't!!!! I consider banning herbal meds tantamount to taking away one of my rights!!!

@nobbsy123 - I guess you just misjudge what kind of traditional medication have you taken. As I have said, there are lots of herbal medicines out there that didn't pass FAD certification. Just see the other side of the coin too. Not all herbal medicines are the same, that is why you should also ask your doctor before taking any medications. About the antibiotic that knocks your immune system, well sounds contradicting. Probably someone must have abused taking antibiotics. But there is one traditional Chinese medicine that I have trusted which will not interfere any of your organs or system and that is Cordyceps from Tiens (take note: prescribed by our doctor). I guess you must have felt so bad taking that wrong kind of medication but judging it as a whole is also not good before you can declare that "TRADITIONAL MEDICATIONS BE OFF THE SHELF". @LadyMarissa- Yes, give Altenative Medication or Traditional Herbal Medication a chance too. Just be wise to select which one is the best and safe by asking also your doctor.

Of course it is the pharma companies behind this! They can't make billions with their prescription meds that often have awful side effects, when there is an all-natural herbal "cure". I am also a big fan of natural cures and try to make my opinion known when they try to outlaw these options. I do understand that sometimes, a more severe treatment is needed, and there are some high risk patients that need the the pharmaceutical meds, but I don't want to put their man-made meds into my body unless I absolutely have to. Speak with your doctor about these natural cures (and you might want to be ready to stock up before they take this healthier option away from you) Ask your doctor about making your own SJW concoction (maybe as tea leaves)and do a little online research. I feel all this important info will also disappear to prevent us from making our own natural cures. Take care!

I have been researching the How To's for some time now (even before seeing this announcement). A study on St Johns Wort showed... An analysis of twenty-nine clinical trials with more than five thousand patients was conducted by Cochrane Collaboration. The review concluded that extracts of St. John's wort were superior to placebo in patients with major depression. St. John's wort had similar efficacy to standard antidepressants. The rate of side effects was twice lower than for newer SSRI antidepressants and five times lower than for older tricyclic antidepressants. The SJW only cost me $9/month where the antidepressants the doc gave me cost $99/month & made me crazier than normal!!!

It shouldn't be banned, that's ridiculous. They don't have the right, if they don't believe in herbal medicine, then don't. I do believe in natural remedies, no side effects and it is harmless ^^

I don't think they should be banned either!!! The excuse for banning is "quality control". I haven't had ANY problems with the quality control of what I'm buying nor am I having any weird side effects!!!. ALL they're doing is raising the cost of staying healthy!!!!

my feelings on this are that herbal medicines still contain active chemicals, albeit those of a plant origin. these chemicals have a very real effect on the human body. not enough people respect this. they think that because something is natural, it's therefore safe. if that were entirely the case, they wouldn't be effective either. because they wouldn't have the dramatic effect on the body that they do. so I think herbal medicine needs just as much regulation as chemical medicine. there are some remedies that are safe enough to be "over the counter" like with aspirin and ibuprofen and so on, where you can just go in and buy them. but for most herbal medicine it should be prescribed by a herbalist, just as chemical medication should be prescribed by a doctor. I beleive it is effective (so much so that if I can ever afford it, I would like to train to be a herbalist. which is a medical degree, which a lot of people seem to forget) . that's why I'd rather see it prescribed than self medicated.

yes. you research. hundreds don't. because they think that herbal means safe. SJW would be dangerous for my husband because it would stop his medication working, due to the way it is absorbed into the body. and having taken us this long to get a combination of medication that works for him, I'd hate to mess that up. and likewise, I wouldn't take it because I know it could interfere with my contraception, and I don't want an unexpected pregnancy. I am not full of caca, I think herbal medicine is brilliant, if I didn't then I wouldn't have aspirations to train as a herbalist. but it IS medicine, and deserves all the respect that should come with that. and like any medication, some should be availiable over the counter and some should only be availiable under the supervision of a trained specialist. it needs to be respected. there are masses of side effects with herbalism. plants contain chemicals too. just because they are not produced synthetically in the lab doesn't mean that some of those effects will be adverse ones. herbal medicine needs just as much respect as any other type of medicine.

I work with plants direct from my own garden. plants certainly can be harmful to the human body, even the beneficial ones. of course plants contain chemicals. everything contains some kind of chemical. most chemicals are entirely natural. it's the chemicals which occur naturally in the plant that cause the physical responses in the body. be they good or bad. there are things growing in my garden that I may use for anxiety or insomnia from time to time, but I use them carefully, because excess use can cause nerve damage. prolonged use of some herbs can cause photosensitivity in your skin. due to an entirely natural chemical called Bergapten which is one of the plants chemical constituants. plants contain natural chemicals. this is a fact. there are MANY MANY herbs that can harm you. even among those commonly used as medicines. because herbs WORK they have a physical and chemical effect on the body. if they didn't, then they would be innefective. if you pick up any decent book on herbalism they will list the active chemicals present in the plant, and possible side effects of that chemical on the body. this is part of herbalism. be that from pre prepared remedies, or the plant in its raw form. I'm all for people using herbal medicines. I do myself, but if you truly believe that I am somehow being untruthful in saying that plants contain chemicals that have a reaction on the human body (does it not occur to you that the positive effects you have experienced are in fact chemical responses in the human body) , complete with a smiley that indicates you think it's utterly ridiculous to state this known fact as truth, just goes to show that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. plants contain chemicals that cause responses in the human body. FACT. without them, herbal medicines wouldn't work. this isn't some placebo effect after all. this is why a herbalist is in fact a fully trained medical professional. because they are working with chemicals. even if they are natural chemicals, and the chemicals act on the body. for good and for harm.

LOL Plants used as herbal medicine even if they contain chemicals are not at all harmful to human body. It is the nature of companies to mix them with chemicals for their own benefit :D. No natural herb extracted from plant if directly applied would ever harm any human species :D. What you are talking are those company made herbs, I would firmly say that you must never have used direct plant herbs, well not many people know about it :D. If plants have chemicals the animals you eat as non-vegitarian food contain those planet chemicals, those animal lick and eat what not things, still you eat them as healthy foood :D Goood lord :P and then say that herbal plants have chemicals that react on human body :D. Neways the choice depends personally with everybody what they prefer.

I think you're right: it's the pharmacos behind the ban. They never learned to share in kindergarten, and certainly don't want to give up any of their huge profits now.

Once again, greed rears its ugly head!!! When I find a sale on an herbal remedy I like, I buy several bottles & use them as needed. Sometimes I build up a stock of them just in case they do get banned!!!

herbal products are not considered meds. herbal products are considered supplements. well that is at least for us folks in the U.S. no, i don't think herbs will ever be banned altogether. however, lawmakers may outlaw a specific herb if its considered too dangerous. that doesn't usually happen though.

herbalism is a medical degree. you learn about anatomy, physiology and all the chemical aspects of the herbal MEDICATION you go on to dispense. and Ladymarissa, the controversy with St Johns Wort, is that like many herbal medicines, it is absorbed in the same way as many conventional medicines, and can affect their effectiveness. the best known example being with oral contraception. if someone is taking oral contraception and St Johns Wort, there is a very real risk of accidental pregnancy. in my husbands case it would stop his antipsychotics working. I don't beleive that the choice to take it should be taken away, but a lot of people don't RESPECT herbal medicines. they think that natural equals safe, but anything that has a real effect on your body needs to be respected. a lot of people will take medication without even reading the leaflet with it, and with herbal medicines, I wouldn't be surprised if even fewer people read the information provided, and would therefore be unaware of the eggect on their medication. because they think that with it being natural there are no side effects. I'm not saying that you personally don't respect them, or that you should have that choice taken away. I just think that there are a lot of people out there that need to be made aware that herbal medicines have very real effects and need just as much care as conventional medicines. most of them should be prescription only in my opinion.

I think this is awful! People use herbal remedies because of the fact that there are fewer or no side effects and the cost is reasonable. I guess I would start growing or producing my own if it got to that point lol.

I also use herbal medicines instead of antibiotics and it works great for me.My experience says they d have lot lesser to non side effects. These remedies should not be ban. They do have their own place. There are few things which can not be sure by herbal medicines but then on lot of mild health problems can be solve using these types of medicines so banning isn’t a right decisions.

If they would ban some herbal medicines, then it should not be all. There may be herbal medicines in the market which did not pass some certifications. But as for me, pulling all those traditional herbal medicine is a no-no and it will also be bias. I am fond of Traditional Chinese Medicines. Aside from the fact that they are safe and all natural, me and my family have been using it for years and we are satisfied with the result it gives. But the fact of the matter is that our family doctor is the one that prescribed it, so we know that it was safe. Some doctors also rely on alternative medicine. Although I have nothing against prescribed medicines which are synthetic. They should also fair and just when it comes to that.

I'm fond of the traditional herbal remedies that my family has used for generations!!! They were plenty good even before the FDA decided they needed control. I still believe that I should have the right to determine which medications I prefer to take NOT anyone else!!!!

once again we see the dangerous assumption that natural = safe. I should introduce you to some of the occupants of my garden. some of which could kill you, or at least make you very ill, down to others which can damage your skin if you touch them, and others that taken internally can stop any other meds you're on working. natural doesn't mean safe. it needs just as much respect as anything made in a lab.

Nature has the best cure for everybody, Herbal things or products are directly extracted from natural means which if provided by a knowledgeable person can work wonders for our body, whereas modern medicines and remedies contain more of anti-biotics which only work temporarily, now a days greed has conquered every person, so naturally the won't leave a chance to make money, doctors today study medicine because they want to have big money plus status. Very few good doctors are there who still work for the cause of human being. Now-a-days very few people have complete knowledge of herbal and ayurvedic medicines which is a bad thing. I would say that herbal medicines are much natural and more effective remedies without side-effects on our body unlike modern medicine :)

Herbal Medications have a lot of benefits to us and i haven't heard any much complains of its side effects, so why banned them? I guess, it depends on the body system how they adopt to herbal medications. For me, its better not banned herbal medications, just consult to a doctor, if its okay to take herbal medications, I myself have used herbal medications and find it effective.
