How do you feel if you can not understand the language others speak?

I came to Germany a week ago and started studying here. Of course in my institute the working language is English, but people are from different countries, such as Spain, India, Germany, China and France. I found that too often I can not understand some guys' English, especially spanish and indian friends'. When they are talking I just feel like a wood standing beside them! When they ask me questions I am so nervous that I alwasy cannot get what they are asking. Do you think it terrible? extremely I think. Of course some German speak English well, but other European countries' citizen may not. I don't know how long it is going to take me to get used to their accent!

just be true yourself if something you don't understand on how they speak. Ask them let them clarify what they are talking about. Its also nice to talk with them so will not feel alone I know they will understand.

Actually I always ask them to repeat their questions. But sometimes I still fail to understand them, so then I fall in a silence and it could be more embarrassing. Do you think so? I just don't want to bother them repeating again and again. But don't worry, I think it is just a problem of time. With more communication with them, I think it shoul not be a problem in the near future. Thanks!

I think it must not be problem for you. I modern world globalisation takes what it takes - people moving around, learning something new and meet other people from different, maybe sometimes hard to understand cultures. I live in European Union country which was long time part of USSR, so for us here english language learning is something new. Oldest people here used to learn german language as third language. You will ask me why only third? The answer is russian language was allways first/second language of USSR depending where you lived in. So english language is new to me too, in primary school we had no teacher to teach it well to us, so allmost all i have learned i learned by myself using internet. But nthere is new generation growing here - they all know english well, learning it at school and can choose which language they want to learn as third one - russian or german. Persponally i hope my sons will learn english, russian and then maybe german and french or spanish languages too :)

Thanks! Actually, I began to learn English from junior middle school, which means I have been learning English for 13 years! Just the lack of practice leads to my poor ablity to speak Englsih well. I am curious that English in your country is just the third language, how can they speak it fluently. Do you have a lot of opportunities to speak it? I thought you must be speaking Russian most of time.

To me I don't find this as a big problem too. I've studied oversea as well with students from different countries and languages, even their accent in English. I don't feel terrible when I don't understand them and I'm not shy to ask them again because I know not everyone are good in English. I'm sure all your friends are doing their best to learn other languages too, so for you asking them again what they were asking will help them to identify in what area do they need to make better in communicating using certain language. We must not look down on them or be nervous ourselves because we are afraid of not understanding other's accent, it is better to help each other. And always realise we come from different countries with different languages. Being able to speak a foreign language, be it English or something else, is an advantage. What you need to do is you need to communicate with them more in a relaxing way, joke around, and not a too serious conversation and you will get to understand their own accent in no time.

Yes you are right. When I am talking to them in a relaxing occassion I really find that I can understand them a little better and am less shy asking them to repeat their questions. But it also depends on the person whon I am talking to. If he/she is talkative the situation is better, but if he/she is a silent guy then it will be a little scary! Thanks for your discussion and suggestions!

It's really a bit scary when we are studying in a foreign country and we don't know it's language. And as you said, there are students from different countries, with different accents and getting what they mean would be really hard. I'd be nervous too if I'd be talking with someone whose accent I don't clearly understand, but I think I'll ask them to say it again even though it may be a bit embarrassing, but we won't know what we want if we won't ask. I hope you'd get used to that many accents and good luck! :)

It is really scary! Standing aside as a wood is not a good kind of feeling:). After staying with them for a week, now I can understand them a little better! So I am looking forward to understanding them completely in the following month. I really hope so! Thanks for your suggestion:)

I think it;s perfectly normal to be intimidated at first. Think of the best part, you get to mingle with people of different cultures and not everybody has the opportunity to do so like you do. It's also an opportunity to get to learn to speak another language aside from english. :)

Thanks! You are right, it is exciting to spend time with those guys from different countries and learn differnt cultures. Maybe it just because that I lack practice. I will try to spend more leisure time with them and after a month or longer I think it will be no problem anymore!

See its just not you these guys must be facing same problems .Isnt it?Talk with them and if sometime you don’t understand what they are saying just smile and tell them you didn’t get it.

Hi, I am a person who is willing to learn a new language. When I first went to overseas for study,I should say English is not my main language and I am speaking a broken English, as for Mandarin, I am totally out from it as I did not speak a single word in Mandarin. However, I never feel down and I am willing to learn. I slowly catch up with some locals who speak Mandarin and as time pastby, I can communicate well in Mandarin for daily conversation. Since your schoolmates are from different countries, you may have chance to learn their languages and don't feel shy,mix around with them and it is gonna be fun to have friends from different part of the world.

It can be frustrating to try to communicate with someone who speaks another language other than what you are used to hearing and speaking. They may not understand you any better than you are able to understand them. When you dont' understand the language of another, it can be a burden.

Some accents are surely making it difficult to understand. When i was in university, i did take up japanese, spanish and thai. Sometimes, we really cannot understand certain terms they used. Anyway, after some time, everything will get better. I think you will start to understand more of what they are saying from time to time. Meanwhile, just make them get used of you saying "I beg your pardon" all the time :p

I really need to get used to say more 'beg your pardon':) May be i am too shy to say that again and again. Usually I really don't want to bother them repeating their questions, I am afraid that if I ask that too much they will not willing to talk to me later:(. But now I can understand them a little bit better:) It seems I need to join them in spare time more! The more the better.

Well, when some people around me talk to each other in a language that i don't understand then i feel ignored. It happens to me sometimes in my college when my friend taks to his friend in their language that i don't understand. But i think that's ok as that's their mother language and they are speaking in that as i always speak in my mother language and sometimes he doesn't understand it too.. Lol..

as you said that you are nervous if they ask you questions. Put your self in their shoes. Imagine the struggle they have to overcome in constructing a single phrase question. I know that it's hard for them cause they speak a language very different to yours. And for you my friend you don't have to worry much since english is the language of the world and should be taught in almost every nation. just don't be pressured cause the pressure should be with the people who speak english as their second or whatever the rank language.

Yes really it is a shameful situation if I can’t understand the other person language that what he speaks. So I am not able to them for conversation. I think we must learn some common languages who speak in many countries. And also we must speak an international language English. Because this language is accept by every country.
