Is Sunday School A Thing Of The Past?

Does your church have Sunday School? Traditionally Sunday school was started to help kids in the streets who had no formal means of eduction, the church as a ministry would round up the kids and use biblical principals to teach them how to read and write - etc. Just like regular school today, but in the early days of our country children had often times to work the fields or factories and couldn't go to for real school. But more parent's today prefer to keep the children with them, or just not come at all anymore. Churches across America are dropping Sunday School according to a study I had read.
Our church was also impacted by the decline in numbers. We noticed that adults were not coming for Sunday School, which was 10 - 11 Sunday morning, but they were rolling in at 11:05 for the morning worship service at 11:15. As a solution we changed our format. Sunday morning service start's at 10:30 now with no Sunday school. the doors are still open at 9:30 for people who want to come in and pray, socialize, drink coffee, or seek counseling from the pastor, but we no longer have Sunday school on Sunday morning. I grew up in Sunday school and was sad to see it go as it was, but we moved the 'school' part to Wednesday nights and have noticed that our numbers are going back up for the teaching.
How is your church coping with the changes in church attendance? do you still have Sunday school - is it a strong program with your church?

We don't have a Sunday School class anymore, it ended p being canceled because parents didnt want to bring their kids before the service started. We do a prayer meeting before the service where we gather together and voice needs and praises and pray together. It started out small but it is beginning to get bigger. We do a junior church where the kids go downstairs for a service geared towards tehm.

My church (a Catholic parish) has Sunday School, and it's called Faith Formation (it used to be called Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, or CCD). It helps kids learn not only the core Christian values, but also how the Catholic Church works in both sacred and secular life. I for one only attended that invigorating Sunday School program in middle and high school!

I believe that Sunday School is still an imprtant part of church attendance. i don't think it is a thing of the past. This is especially important for children's religious education.

Sunday shool is the core for Christians faith. It is from the earliest age we had to groom them to love and know Christians faith. We cannot wait until they are big because by that time it is already too late. Sunday School will make children happy about knowing GOD in the fun way. Once we love to do GOD work from our early age, we will love it even when we have grown up.
for me Sunday School is not justa thing of the past but also the thing of future.
