Every year my grandmother would ask us what we wanted her to cook and what kind of a cake we wanted for our birhtday. I have always had a homemade cake for my birthday and the same for my brothers.
I wanted to carry on the tradition for my children. I also do the same for my husband as well. Even with a long day of work and school I still want to put that little extra time of love in my cakes for my family.
Do you make your children and family members cakes or do you store buy?

My family always used to buy cake mix, and make it from there, so there was some hand-made element.
It was just too much effort to make it completely from scratch. But the idea of grandma baking cakes and doing it from scratch is very cute and something I kind of wish I had in my childhood.

I can admit that on those long days I will buy a cake box mix and add a little extra into the mixture. I feel a little guilty at times but its still made from love.
And just know when you have a family you can create your own traditions for them to enjoy.

Although I can make a cake, but I can't make the professional birthday cake as well as the bakery. So I will buy a birthday cake for my son. As you know, making the cake needs the time. If it is not in weekends, I can't make a birthday cake for him as I have to work in day time. So usually I will just buy the birthday cake and I will make the simple cake for my family in my spare time.
I love China

I don't have kids yet, but I bake birthday cakes for family members and friends already, so I think I will probably do the same once I have a kid. I think it is more fun, because you can personalize the cake better this way, and write whatever you want on it etc. And it is also much, much cheaper!

My aunt owned a bakery, and she did all of the cakes in the family. She would always find out what my "thing" was at the time and incorporate it. My favorite one was just a rectangular cake, but she made a roller skate on it, the party was at the skating rink.
My daughter is not yet two. I no longer live close to my aunt, for her to continue the tradition, but I have a few skills I have learned along the way. I am planning on making a square cake and designing it to look like a block.

Its not hard to do. I have three kids and my youndgest just turned one this past month. I did him a cake shaped in the number one and then a little present box on the side for him to have all to himself.
My little girls loves pink and princess themed things. I always dye her cake and icing different shades of pink and this upcoming year she wants a castle for her 5th birhtday.
I just look for pictures on the internet to give me ideals and tips on how to do the cakes for them. My oldest sone's birthday is next month so i'm trying to think of an idea for his cake.
Good luck to you.
