We all hear about how some parent dump their children in front of the TV for hours at a time, but I thought that this was pretty young. This picture is of my 3 week old granddaughter being mesmerised by the TV !! Please don't think I'm serious by the way, her parents DON'T leave her watching TV ll day!My daughter just snapped her this morning when she seemed engrossed in it!! However, on a more serious note, I do think that too many children are left for long periods of time with just the TV to educate them, there are just too many all day round channels now for children, what is your opinion?

hmm well I think TV can be a very good educational too but only for an hour or two not all day. To me that's a babysitter and kinda sad...However my daughter use to have my GS watch these Cd's called baby einstein, hes 8 years old now and in 3rd grade and the teachers are amazed at all he knows compared to some others in the same grade....so sometimes watching TV can have an advantage but just NOT all day....especially between the ages of 1 and 5...I'm talking educational programs..just my thoughts...your granddaughters adorable by the way..yep shes going to grow up smart lol

Ah yes I believe you must have heard the quote saying "Anything in excess can be dangerous". watching TV for some minutes or hours (in breaks) can prove helpful for a child, obviously if he is watching an educational channel. But many hours continuous watching can spoil his concentration levels in studies, spoil his eyes, and make watching tv a bad habit thereby addicting him .

I certainly agree with you there, there are of course some very educating things on TV for children, but I like to think that they also manage to learn through books as well as TV and the internet.

I am a member of the first TV generation, and I think I probably watched too much TV as a child. I think it has ONLY gotten WORSE over the years.

Many years ago I watched a lecture on TV about TV watching. The fellow who was speaking said something that made me sit up and take notice. He said that TV was basically watching other people have all the fun and he encouraged us to get out and start living an actual life rather than let the TV live it for us. I tried limiting my TV watching for years but it is very addictive, especially for young children. I canceled my cable and was using antenna so we only had three channels for a while, then disconnected the antenna and my daughter, little stinker, sneaked the antenna back onto the TV we had at the time and was watching TV rather than heading out to the latchkey program she was enrolled in! I finally got rid of the TV altogether and I do not miss it at all. We still watch shows but online where the commercials are much fewer and shorter and I can watch only the shows I want to when I want to. It also frees up space in my home that a television set would take up. I love space in my home!

On nice days, when we can be outside, I do not think the tv is on, except to get the news in the morning. My daughter is sometimes in the room when the news is on, but most of the time is in the play room which is adjacent to the living room. On really rainy, or very cold days, I allow her between an hour and an hour and a half of television. We usually watch sesame street, and sometimes the dinosaur train (she is still a bit young for it at 22 months.) My one exception is that we have a bunch of kids music concerts. We watch those without it going into her tv time. This time is a very active time where we are up and dancing.

You would seem to have struck a happy medium in TV viewing for your child!!

Cute pic but I do understand that it is a joke! My little cousins watch tv constantly. Sometimes it is educational but most of the time it is some of these silly cartoons that don't teach anything....honestly, what does Pokemon teach??? The bad part about it is that they will sit right in front of the tv. I mean less than 3 feet away from it in a daze watching engrossed as if the cartoon character has them in a trance. When I take care of them I always try to assure that if they are watching the stupid cartoons they are at least far enough away from the tv not to cause problems with their eyesight. One of my cousins is only 10 and he already has very thick glasses. Once he gets entranced with those shows he does not hear what you say to him. I would have to go tap him on the shoulder or turn the tv off to get his attention. It is very aggravating and not at all good for the child!

This is exactly the type of TV viewing for kids that I am against!!

I agree! Please put kids in front of the t.v. for far too long. Now I would put the kids in front of Sesame Street or other kids programs for a bit while I would get some housework done, or laundry or so on. However they would watch like an hour in the morning, and maybe an hour in the afternoon. It is a great learning channel, but still children should not be stuck in front of the t.v. for hours on end. The parents should teach the children, not the t.v.

So true, and I used to get a lot of pleasure myself in teaching the children nursery rhymes, reading them stories, doing crafts etc with them, one of the joys of motherhood!!

Children at an early age need a lot of interactions outside of the TV. They need to be able to go to the park, and play with other children as well. It will broaden their learning abilities more so than a TV. There are still a few good children shows that can help with the learning as well, but we as parents need to balance that with more interactions.

I have a 9 month old baby, he's not really fond of the TV but I let him watch once in a while. Especially those that are educational, like videos that has nursery songs, teaching the alphabet, spelling, and counting. Initially, my baby just disregarded it and didn't really watch it. But as time passed by, he would always watch. He likes the part when a parent would sing nursery songs to a child. Let them watch tv with guidance and with moderation. These tools may also be effective in babies' brain development.

I think it is the moderation that is important, it is the odd parent who thinks that a TV takes preference over reading and singing to their kids that annoys me!

According to a recent survey in The University of Pennsylvania children who spend hours in front of the T.V. are in danger of becoming dull and staring at the screen for so long can prevent them from their normal and natural mental development. Besides, children mental growth can be stimulated by so many other ways and cognitive games! I really vote for finding a better entertainment for our children!
