Do you do anything to save any or all of the stuff that is on your computer? Of course you need anti-virus and a firewall to protect you, but things can still happen. I use an external hard drive. They are pretty cheap, and you plug it into a USB port. Set it up for what you want to save and when, and then ignore it. Some program files cannot be saved in working format on an external HD, because of copyright protections. Still, you can be assured of saving all your music and all of your documents of something catastrophic happens to your computer.

i prefer to store certain data in my personal perdrive rather than in pc. i mainly use dvd or a cd to store tha data as they can rewritten and there is no possibility of a virus in dvd or cd until it is rewritable cd or dvd. recently i have though of using external hard disk, i will have a work on it. you can store more data in it.

My external HD has 500 GB capacity. I do not think I will ever need more. If you want to store movies, that might not be big enough, but I do not use it for that.

I am thinking to put all those important files and pictures on external disk or CD. Few months ago, all the data and pictures that I had in my notebook were gone. The hard disk broke and can't be fixed anymore. So I need to do something to protect the files for the future.

Yes, you can save them on a CD. DVDs hold a lot more, so that is a better choice. but when you save to disc you are saving what you have right now. When you add something or change something tomorrow, the new stuff has not been saved. There are online options, but with an external HD, it is all in-house. Plus, if you set it for a daily save, it will update any files that have changed and just store the new version. It works for me.

Because I have had to wipe my computer clean twice this year I have started saving the things I write and can't just go get more of. I save them on a thumb drive, but I do have an external hard drive I can start saving them on now.

Saving files to external hard drive is sometimes give safety to your files. Using external hard drive has an advantage or disadvantage to the users. the disadvantage is that it's cheap and portable and easy to use and don't need compatibility issues. the disadvantage of it is it is prone to virus attack and can easily be accessed by hackers and private issues.
