What ones did your parents teach you or did you learn around for having lived a while?
Garlic cures high everything! High blood pressure, etc.
Mullein oil for ears.
Very warm cloth for ears.
Chamomile to be calm for women and skull cap for men.
Your turn.

Echincea and goldenseal for colds
Rinse your hair in vinegar and water mixture to get rid of dandruff
Honey and milk will help you get to sleep
Fat bacon will draw out a splinter
Castor oil and duct tape on a wart will get rid of it
Vinegar for high blood pressure, weight loss and indigestion (2 tbs in a glass of water twice daily)
Hot tea and honey for a sore throat
Honey will heal and soothe cuts and scrapes
Baking soda with mild soap makes a good facial scrub
There's more, but my brain quit working! :)

I didn't know goldenseal should be added to the Echinacia. I've heard of the rice your hair one.
Have used just warm milk to go to sleep and it works well.
Never heard of bacon fat drawing out a splinter.
Have heard of duct tape for a wart, but not the caster oil part.
Vinegar is like garlic, supposed to help with high everything!
We use hot tea and honey, some people say add lemon, too, but too acid for me. I love this cure best.
Honey is a great bandage, the bee keepers will love you for bringing that one up, surprised I didn't mention that one myself.

Wasn't just the Romans. Antibiotics are a recent discovery. Our soldiers used it, too.

Ginger help ease sore throat and you can also try gargling lukewarm water with salt.
If you're suffering from boils, you can use potato slices soaked in warm water.

I've tried the first two, but not the last one. But then again, I've never had boils (knock on wood), but my brother did once. Thanks and take care!

hi writeredge,
Eating tomatoes can help fight against sunburn and wrinkles, eating five tablespoons of tomato paste helps skin's ability to protect against harmful UV rays. These rays can lead to premature ageing and even skin cancer. enjoy mylotting

That's goood to know, probably why my husband's skin is doing better than mine. He can have tomatoes and I can't. At least not the high acid ones. Thanks and take care.

The old folks are really good at this. And it will be useful if we can know those really good remedies. I learned from my mom that garlic can really slow down high BP. If you have sore throat you should gargle with water mixed with salt. Ginger can also help in sore throat and also can clear any hoarseness of the voice. Milk can make you sleep at night.

Baking soda with a little water to form a paste on bee stings.
Baking soda and salt are very popular for many things. Cloves, just make sure it doesn't go on open wounds and I've heard the duct tape one before, too. All great ones. Amazing how useful duct tape is.

Mom and dad would tie salt in a handkerchief and warm it in a warm oven to put on my brother's ear when it hurt. One time I remember a homemade cough syrup with boiled onion and sugar. We also have done lemon and honey, or sugar with vinegar by the spoonful for coughs. Coke syrup from the pharmacy for croup. Steam tents for croup, or a closed room with the hot shower running.

I got the link and that tells you next to nothing.
Cod liver oil and another oil were all the rage in the olden days. Between the two, cured everything. That's what I thought you were going to say.

Well I'd like to say lavender oil to repel fleas, but found it isn't so..:(
But what I do know works is citrus scent repels spiders. We were getting them pretty heavy when the nights starting getting cooler until I finally bought some citrus essential oil to add to my cleaners. So where I clean, I no longer see spiders..:)

I've kept hay fever at bay this year by drinking nettle tea.
Garlic is also good for threadworm a parasitic worm that is often present in and spread by children (because when they are little they don't always wash their hands properly and are often grouped together at school).

We probably have a different name for that worm.
Nice to know about nettle tea.

That one I got from my grandma: a glass of warm lemon juice with honey for a sore throat. It works wonders, I drink it and the next day my throat doesn't hurt anymore.
Thyme tea is also good for colds, and vinegar works really well for wounds (and mosquito bites!) too.

I'll have to try the thyme tea one. I've tried the rest. They work well. Sometimes I can't handle the lemon juice, though.

I learned this from my mom, whenever I had sore throat she will make me a mixture of cup of warm water, 1 tbsp. salt and vinegar. Then she will tell me to gargle it several times a day. The salt and vinegar kills the virus.

I've heard of salt gargles, but not with vinegar, too. Glad it works for you, thanks and take care.

I learned to put duct tape on a plantar wart. Apparently there is an acid in some brands' adhesive that softens the wart and it heals easier. I have never actually tried that one as I have never had a plantar wart or any wart, that I can remember, for that matter.
Warm cloth for ears is a god one. If there is a fever involved you have to pay special attention. I always start with a cool washcloth and if the temperature is going up, use a warm one.
Hot chocolate for a sore throat is the best sore throat remedy I have ever tried.
I have more, I know, but I cannot think of them off of the top of my head right now. My mom was a RNA and had all sorts of nifty little tricks.
