My husband and the fireplace, not a good match.

My husband is a serious firebug and he proved it once again just a little while ago.
He drives me crazy when he puts garbage in the fireplace instead of wood, just to keep it going he says.
Well, he over did it a little while ago when he put too much in there and the fire shot up the mantle almost to the top of it.
He's quite foolish this way and I've warned him before not to do this as we don't have a fire extinguisher yet, which is something we really need to get and soon.
I don't want to keep warning him, but I will if I have to, I don't want our house to burn down, but it will if he keeps this up.
He thinks that a glass grate will solve the problem, but that will only work for the sparks that fly, it wont keep the fire in if there's too much of it.
I may have to ban him from using the fireplace if he doesn't stop putting our house in danger.
It's not just the house, it's the pets as well that he's endangering by doing this, it's not right, but he doesn't think about it when he does this.
I really hope he stops doing this before something goes horribly wrong.

It sounds like you may have a problem, for sure. I would tell him that he cannot do that or else he will not start them at all. I hope you get through to him, and I would get some fire extinguishers soon!!

sorry kris, I don't mean to laugh, but sounds like your husband is a pyromaniac... We use to burn wood before our chimney caught on fire, and you are right, you have to be careful of what you burn and how much. If there is already a fire with wood, you don't need to add anything to it. In the beginning a little paper to help it along is okay as well as some products they have on the market as firestarters. But to keep adding garbage isn't good and it can clog your chimney with crisode (sp?) much quicker.
