Recently I was reading some article in a magazine about the poor and needy people. The World has a majority of people who need support and help from others - Poor, Old, Disabled and many more. The studies done revealed that millions are suffering because of natural calamities and man made situations like war. The article was an invite for doing charity donations.
I was wondering if I can donate all my income (which is very small at the moment) for sponsoring the education of a child somewhere, why cant millions of us do something like this? It is just a small amount or item that can be of use to someone else.
What is your stand? Do you actively participate in charity sometime or the other or stay away from it? If you prefer to stay away please let me know WHY? - I would like to know your reasons if you can share.
Thanks and Regards,

Hi, thesids
You are a warm-hearted man. I agree with what you said. The world has a lot of people who need support and help from the others. So we need to take action to help them as soon as possible. I think that charity donations is a good way to show our love to them.

I believe in charity when it is put to good use. I feel we should help the people that are starving and homeless over here first. After all, everybody knows that the poverty level is up, but does any one even begin to think why? The way I see it, if we helped people over here, in our own country first, then went to help other countries, we would have more money to support the other countries, because people over here would be better off, and there would be more of an economy to support the needs of those less fortunate.

Hi Ladymetal,
There are things that are and would just happen. And you have no control on most of those. The factors that cause the poverty can be reduced no doubt but the poverty cannot be wiped out from the earth - there would always exists the rich and the poor and this is a way and fact of life or whatever.
It is not always that the poor need your charity. Even the rich need that at times - consider the Katrina at New Orleans or the quake at Hiati or even the Quakes in China. The natural calamities dont differentiate on economic grounds. Those who were rich a moment ago are now in shambles and staying at camps.

When it comes to donating to charity.not everone is able to give. it isn't that they don't care or have a heart. It may just be that they aren't financially able to do so. Giving of your time to others is just as importantt as giving a monetary donation.

I do give a lot of things away but most things I try to sell on ebay or in a yard sale first. I need all the money I can get. If I was rich and didnt need to worry about it then I wouldnt sell my things I would gladly give them away to anyone less fortunate. There are lots of programs out there to help people in the united states who are in need such as disability, cash assistance, foodstamps and so much more. If your a single guy though without kids you arent going to qualify for any of that stuff unless you have a disability so its harder for men then it is for women to get by on a low income I suppose.

Thank you shagging for sharing the US has some great policies for such people. Yes, in India we too have so many policies and proposals from Government, but there are many corruptions and as a result, many benefits of them are unable to reach the real needy people. It is sad but I believe it is something that exists in almost every country where there are more poor and needy.
Also - Please see my response to your post below.

Hi Sender,
Yes, I agree with you. It is true that we are not always financially strong enough for the donations part, but why do people misunderstand donations to be associated with charity? I mean, you can donate your old books, clothes and many other things that might look non-useful to you.
You have rightly mentioned that giving time is just as important as making a monetary donation. I too spend some of my time on weekends with orphans and / or old people at old age homes and I can feel the happiness around. I consider that too is a kind of charity that I can do.

I guess it really isn't for many. It shows it here. You've got some few responses. But I personally think that we have our own soft spot to help the needy. It's just that we have our own priorities and goal to achieve. But for me, I do know I'll be on charity after I'm done with school and when I have a stable job already.

Well thats really a noble thought uniqueorn. The first charity that I did was when I was at the school. I just managed to collect some small funds from my neighborhood and home to put into the donation box of an Old Age Home in the city.
I believe and agree that many want to participate in this charity thing but are too occupied and busy with their other priorities.

Bible says it is better to give than to receive and if you ask present time billionaires, they would agree.
According to Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad, if ever he wants something really bad, he gives to his church or his charity and then he gets what he wants.
If everyone in the world has the same thinking as yours, I'm sure this world would be a better place.

Hi ddaguno,
First let me thank you for starting the flow of responses to this post. I was starting to wonder where have all mylotters been since I posted this :)
Thanks for appreciating my view. I believe the same that giving anything does come back to us in some good way. Though I do not expect my donations or charity to always return back as I get peace and satisfaction from this and this is the best reward that I want.
The world is still a better place, thanks to many people who donate and run charities. But yes, we still need more and the feeling of this will make the earth a much better place to stay.

Hi Rondolawe
I think you have misunderstood the charity thing. It never is about money only. You can donate anything - your time, your old clothes, your old books, anything that you can part with. Even participating in creating awareness about the charity is considered to be a charity.

There are so many people out there in the world that are poor and needy but not everyone can afford to donate things. You say you donate all of your income??? You mean just your mylot income right because if you went to work everyday and gave all your money away to donations you wouldnt have food to eat or money to pay your bills. I cant afford to give donations because I live off $400 a month cash. That doesnt go far. I wish I was rich so I could give people who really needed help the things that they needed.

I see. So you give a percentage of your earnings when you can. That is very kind and generous of you and your wife to have come to that decision together to keep those in need.
