What did you do to earn money as a young teen?

My 13 year old son and a friend plan to make some money this fall raking leaves for people. It will be interesting to see how well he does, what did you do as a kid or a young teen (under 16) to earn some extra cash?

This brings back so many memories, I first started working or shall I say slaving in a fast food Cuban restaurant at the age of 11. I have been supporting myself since and had to lie and say I was 15, I know the owners knew I wasn't 15. But they sure knew who to slave me. As I worked 7 days a week at 10 hours a day. I would say your son raking leaves should be good as he will learn the value of hard earned money, and if he enjoys earning for his work, perhaps shoveling snow for some neighbors may also be an avenue to venture.

I earned some extra spending money during breaks by finding seasonal jobs and also recycling recyclable materials like aluminum cans and plastic battles. I had my first working for the a state agency. My job was being a clerk, mostly doing things with a computer. Nice job experience though. I learned that jobs that require you to stay in an office for the rest of the day is boring.

I always babysat. I did that for as long as I could remember. I hope your son has a good time and has a lot of good customers.

I mowed yards, threw papers, I didn't have much skills other than that but I enjoyed doing work to make some money. I did shovel driveways one winter but that is hard work! Paper routes, if they are local, are fun to do. Its hard work but you get to meet your neighbors and establish a relationship with them. I never did baby sit because that's a girl thing.

I started babysitting when I was 11 or 12. When I turned 14, I started working at Brown's Chicken. I also kept babysitting. I actually worked quite a bit. I didn't really do any after school activities because I was working so much. I gave most of my money to my boyfriend so that he could buy lunch at school because his parents wouldn't give him any money.

I used to babysit for some people in my area but my brother used to coach little kids in sports when he was 15 and made some good money and also had a blast. I wish your son the best of luck :)

That is a good way - raking leaves. I did that too during my teenage. And also yard work at the houses in the neighborhood. The people were so kind too, paying more than my expectations. I also did flyer deliveries in the neighborhood. That helped gaining more money too.

Leaves, Lawns, Driveways...Depending on the season, baby sitting, and the bottle depot. Grunt work, now things are easier. Cheers.

I would walk my neighbors kids to school every morning and I'd get a dollar a day for that. I also babysat for both of my neighbors. Other than that I got an allowance if I did my chores around the house. You could try directing those kids to mylot to help them earn too I guess... haha.

I started babysitting when I was ten. I had taken some basic first aid courses and just babysat kids on my street when I was that young, as my mother was always home in case I needed help (I never did, though.) It's usually harder for boys to get babysitting jobs because of gender stereotypes, but with first aid courses teen boys can sometimes get jobs watching older male children, and can keep them amused playing sports and video games, etc, while the parents are out. Once I was 16 I became a lifeguard working for our municipal community centres, which put me through university without ever needing a loan or grant. For two years I did school part time, worked full time hours, and didn't even live with my parents!

I used to babysit my neighbor's two children. I also cleaned houses, worked as a waitress for a summer, and worked as a maid in a hotel after school. Back in the early 70s, the hiring age for those types of jobs was 13, but that was in New Jersey. Good luck to your son and his friend, it's nice that they want to earn some income, especially raking leaves! :-)
