EHIC card

Well we are going to Spain in 4 months from school, and I am told i need an EHIC card. But I cant seem to get my head around this, do I use my Mum's who already has one and won't expire till a long while or do I have to do something from my Mum's card to get mine.
Please explain in detail and ASAP.
