How Do French Protest Groups Motivate The Citizens?

I can't help but be impressed by the French peoples ability to get up off their backsides and protest when their government tries the tactics that our own powers seem to get away with time and again.
People in Britain have very little confidence in the Government here, and I hear anger from everyone I speak to about what's going on in our country today, but mention protesting, or actually standing up to do something about it, and most Britons balk, and disappear off to watch Coronation Street, or Blex Factor.
Just to clarify, I'm not a big fan of damaging private property, but I wouldn't mind causing an inconvenience to the powers that be to get a point across.
So how do the French get people motivated to take to the streets? Because I'm thinking we need to start emulating them, and getting out there ourselves.
