Well for all my friends on mylot I know you have heard me talk about my shih tzu "cody". Well a week in a half ago he woke up and ended up throwing up and then was not able to get up on his left side. His left eye was also going a bit crazy. I took him to the vet and it seems he has an enlarged heart and that he had a heart attack. He has now been on medication for this period of time and has been back to normal. Has anyone of you pet lovers had any experience with your dog having an enlarge heart. My cody is 12 years old in dog years and 84 in human years so I have come to face that I may only have a few more years with him. I just would like to know if anyone as experienced this and what the outcome was. Thanks so much!

I'm sorry! I hope that Cody feels better and when the end comes it is very quick.
My Gus got epilepsy just after a rattlesnake bit him so I know what it's like to have to medicate a dog every day. He gets his meds twice a day. Cheese makes a great wrapper for the pills because putting them in his food doesn't work.
Hugs and well wishes to Cody!

Thanks! For cody we put a little bit of peanut butter and he swallows the medicine just like that. Hope your Gus is doing good now. Take care and have a great day!

My experiences with treating elderly pets when their bodies start to fail has not been good. The animals don't like the medications and mostly just sleep, I am never sure that their quality of life is worth the extra time I give them. With heart problems breathing becomes difficult and sleep is pretty much all they do. I think honestly that we keep them with us for us not for them and I hope the next time I face this I will be able to just let them go. Your animal may respond well to the meds and you may have valueable time with him. Each must make their own choice in this situation.

The medication has not effected him in a negative way yet. However, once I see that he is suffering I will be able to put him down as much as I will be hysterical I could not deal with him being in pain or suffering of any kind. He has been a great pet and friend to me and I can't ask for anything else. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Hi Lelin my friend. I am so sorry about your special little dog. I know it is a hard thing to face. I will keep Cody in my prayers. A good thing about it is if something does happen to your Cody he will be with the FATHER in Heaven waiting till your return to him in Heaven. God loves HIS animals! No I don't know what the out come is for an animal having a heart attack I am so sorry I couldn't help you with that. I know how hard it is to have a pet for years and it pass on but I also know when we all die including animals we all go back to the FATHER in Heaven. 2nd Corinthians 5:7-8 For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say and willing rather to be absent from the body, is to be pesent with the LORD.
I know it has got to be hard to see your special Cody suffering.

I know how you must feel. It's so sad when our little friends suffers and we can't do much to ease their suffering!
It's good you were there when the heart attack happened, this way you could take Cody to the vet right away.
My Nera was home alone when she collapsed , When I came back from work, I found her lying in a strange position, in an unusual place for her. She could hardly get up when she saw me, but it was the begining of her end. Despite all my efforts, she stopped eating from that day on. She only wanted to drink water and walk in circles. Hundred of circles. After ten days of torment, I have to let her go. She was 13.
I don't want to scare you, but you have to give Cody his treatment and keep an eye on him all the time, to help him right away when he needs you to. I wish you both all the best.

Awwwwww Lelin I a sorry
Gissi has an enlarged Heart and a Heart Murmur and he is on Tablets I am lucky that he has never had a Heart attack though, but that is only because he got so sick beginning of the Year he had to be sedated and they checked everything and found out that he had the enlarged Heart
If you just give him his Meds he should be ok and of course try not to let him stress either that is all you can do for now
He can still live a few Years so try not to worry to much
I worry about Gissi specially when he has Problems breathing but he is doing ok
My Love and heart goes out to you both
Give Cody a gentle Hug from me

Thank you for your kind words. I'm feeling better about everything because he is back to the way he was before the heart attack. I have being keeping him as calm as I can. He is almost finished with his meds and I will then be taking him back to the vet for another checkup to make sure everything is ok. Thanks again and have a great day.
