Monkey stole glasses of my son

monkey stole glasses - This monkey of Vrindavan stole glasses of my son
India

Hi friends, last month I was in Vrindavan, a pilgrimage place in India, with my wife, sons and their family on a pilgrimage trip. This place have many monkeys, they are supposed to be holy. People feed them. Some of them are really naughty; I saw one smoking cigarette thrown by somebody. The local people are very friendly, they told us to remove the glasses, if possible and hide the hand bag etc while on the streets. While we were taking a round at Sri Radha Damodar temple, a monkey suddenly snatched the glasses from my son’s face. We were told, sometimes the monkeys will accept bribes in the form of bananas or other foodstuffs to return the stolen goods, and sometimes they will accept the bribe and then not return what they have stolen. We tried offering banana first but failed. Next one man came, he had cooked rice in a polythene bag, he lured the monkey, and the monkey came down from the stair-case of a house under construction, where he was sitting, threw the glasses and took away the rice bag. SEE PICTURE He had chewed the side bars of the glasses, but the front frame with glass was intact. We had to replace the frame in a nearby spectacle shop. It was learnt that, the rice sellers and spectacle shop do good business due to the monkey here. What about your place, any such story to share? Professor

I find these monkeys not funny at all. In Subic, Zambales, Philippines, the monkeys were acting same way as you described so that authorities have been watching them. They would rob, beg and do all kinds of notorious activities. I don't think just because they are animals, they should be exempted from the law. Robbing has always been crime whoever commits it.

No monkeys here, stealing glasses or otherwise. But I do have a cat who steals socks. I do the laundry and roll up the socks into balls, and if the laundry doesn't get put away right away, he will pick up the sock rolls in his mouth and play with them.

Well, we don't have wild monkeys here so that is something that I've never experienced. However, the first time that we took Kathryn to the zoo, there was an orangutan that really wanted everyone's handbags. He was behind class in his habitat, but he kept pointing to the things that he wanted and then he would shove a little piece of stick through a open corner of the glass like he was telling us to put the items through the little hole.

This happens in Bali, too. Bali has several monkey forests that are now becoming tourists attraction. However, the monkeys are becoming naughty because of the many visits of people. They took glasses, earrings, necklace, hat, anything that they bargain for foods. Sad fact.

I am not sure that I would visit that place. I would not be able to see if I took my glasses off, but I could not handle the attack of the monkeys. It does not sound like a good day at all.

Don't monkey around with the monkeys. They are daylight robberies that have gained immunity with the laws of the land. We have a popular 'orangutan'(a close relative of the monkeys) sanctuary here that attracts a lot of tourists coming to take their photographs. Though there is a big signboard at the entrance to warn tourists to be careful with their belongings but sometimes these jungle beasts are cunning and they know how to play their monkey tricks to rob people of their cameras or handphones. Once they got hold of the stuffs they will quickly run to the jungle. No amount of coaxing will lure them back to return the stolen properties.

monkeys are expert in mimicry or imitating things done by man...so why should they be behind in the fashion and styles? were the glasses alright when u got back? i think that there were no scratches...or else it would be of no use

hi professor I was just remembering something that happened years back. We were in this large pet chop looking for a pure bred dog. They had monkeys there in cages but this one got loose, dashed past me and gra bbed my glasses. he then proceeded to climb up a telephone pole and sat up there. oh he threw my glasses down oh myG. Of course from that height when they hit the pavement the glass shattered. so I was out a pair of glasses but the pet shop manager insisted on reimbursing me for my lost glasses.Actually I had to explain to him that my hmo paid for all of the glasses but a 25 dollar copay. He instead made me take enough money to go to his own optometrist and get fitted and get the style and all I wanted and I felt really bad. As like I told him my insurance had paid all but the 25 dollars for the frame I picked out. He knew that it would take quite qhile to put in a request to replace these and also I might be denied the request as on an hmo you can only get new glasses every three years.

dear professor, that was a funny experience but also annoying for your son who had to bribe the monkey. here animals are supposed to be not allowed on streets and near parks where people pass. if there are animals around, they are caged and people are not allowed to touch not feed them. (although i see a lot of stray dogs. iwwwwwwwwww!)i hope the government does something about it. ann

Thank you so much for response. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead. God bless you. Welcome always.

This is something similar what happend to my friend in Lonavala near Pune. We were 3 families together to spend some good time at Lonavala and when we were entering a park, there were number of monkeys on the boundry wall of the park. My friend's wife was entering with some eatables and the moment she was at the gate, one monkey came close to her and she had to throw everything she had in hand. I will have to say one thing that monkey did not harm anyone in the crowd, they just need something to eat. I saw many peoples offering eatables to them and all the monkeys getting things to eat were polite enough to catch and go.

Most of the monkeys are good, polite, but few are naughty, particularly those in tourist spots and pilgrimage places, an i think it is we who make them nauty.. Thank you so much for detailed response Ajay. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead. God bless you. Welcome always.
