Why do you use windows?

Allmost everybody knows who Microsoft are, and most have used one of their products. You buy a computer, Windows is on it, you buy a keyboard and even then the Windows logo is present. Microsoft has such a dominance over the computing industry, it's what's taught in schools, what's used in businesses and most home users. But... why? Windows and Microsoft programs cost an excessive amount, and there's free variants out there, like Linux, which can do everything Windows can and more! it has a free office suite, games, and basically everything you allready do on your Windows machine, you can do on Linux so much better. So why do you use windows? I think most people haven't heard of Linux, or when they hear it they imaging the screen's from Matrix and panic. Let me know your opinions, and if you do use Linux, let other's know why! (I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 :D )

I am a windows use but i have tried and used almost every linux dirstros released over the past 5 years.. the reason why i don't use linux operating systems is that most of the good game titles released do not support linux and are exclusively released for consoles and windows. If i install linux on my expensive gaming hardware then it will lie around and will be of no use :D

addition: I love linux and prefer it over windows... but games doesn't allow me to switch completely to linux. But if you are onto other purposes linux is the best. You can find free alternatives for many expensive windows programs... :)

No, i don't agree to this as there are some people who hate consoles, like me :D. I use computer for gaming purposes and doesn't own any consoles. And how does consoles like ps3 run high FPS games in HD resolutions? Its just simple upscaling using an HD monitor? I think consoles like ps3 render images in vga resolution and upscale it. They use GPUs Based on NVIDIA Geforce 7000 series architecture too.

Very good point, but I have a question. If most computer games are also available on consoles, why did you need the gaming computer in the first place? Gaming on Linux is a little bit misleading, especially seen as ATI released their graphics options program for Linux, showing high-detailed FPS games in the screenshots... games that don't run on Linux. It may be possible Steam might make it to Linux eventually, but you are right with the Linux and games argument. A post I recently saw, stated that "most people will use consoles for games with high-detail graphics, and computers for logic/puzzle games, which are available on Linux, and far better than the one's available on Windows" -Would you agree?

Too many things I use run only on Windows. So it is better to stick to Windows.

I connect to my office network using RSA token. MS Powerpoint for presentations - I know the OpenOffice alternative but the format runs. Some nice software like FreeOFTE works with Windows and my WindowsMobile. As I said, I have too many things invested in Windows. There are some that can be moved over to the alternatives but it means I have to sacrifice some of my favorite software. No Thanks.

@Strovek : FreeOFTE works fine with Linux, and using OpenSSL and OpenVPN, my connections to my FTP from my WM phone are really secured. You can use quite all your softwares under Linux, the big difference is that you need to invest time to find the right software working with both Windows Mobile and Linux. And here, I understand your point of view...

I like Windows a lot. It's most likely because I'm used to it, and have become so accustomed with how to do everything (I grew up a PC girl, I don't know if that matters) but I definitley like it better than any other kind of system.

That is the main point that a lot of people make. Because they are used to the software they use, or were taught it at school, they stick by what they know. Isn't it worth learning something new, if it can do everything you want better? And what about customization? Linux can be made to look exactly like Windows, or Mac. -Please let me know your views on these things. Also, 'PC' is one of the things I hate about Microsoft. With their recent Windows 7 adverts in the UK (they might be the same one's everywhere else) stating "I'm a PC" is misleading. PC means Personal Computer. A Personal Computer is any computer that is not connected as a Client machine in a network domain. This means that your home computer, is a PC. If it runs Windows, Linux or Mac, they are all PC's, as they are 'personal computers'. I do not agree with Microsoft stating "I'm a PC", because it is forcibly saying that every Personal Computer in the world runs Windows. -Any other views or points on this subject would also be nice :) Hope to hear from you soon!

Well I use windows, and not any other OS because I have experienced it that windows is much easy to use and user friendly than any other OS. Windows is much more powerful than any other OS. Installing programs is easy with windows. You need to take classes and be an expert to use other OS like linux efficiently, while windows are really easy to learn and use. Although it is expensive while most of the others OS like linux are free but still keeping in view there so many advantages, its worth the cost. So thats why I use windows.

I was using computer since the time of PC DOS. It is the Disk Operating System used by IBM before. They manufacture computers at the same time they are the one creating their Operating System. So when Microsoft introduces the MS DOS, I can easily use it since it is very much similar with PC DOS of IBM. So since then everytime Microsoft releases a new OS I tend to buy and use them.

I think like most people, I grew up using Windows. Although I have used a mac before at work, I really find no need to shift. All the programs I need work fine on a Windows PC. If it gets the work done, then I'm ok with it! :) I'm using Vista by the way. I've heard a lot of horror stories about this OS, but for the 2 years I've been using this laptop, I haven't experienced any major hassles. I'm quite happy with it in fact.

Vista is definitely one system I have stayed away from. After purchasing my first laptop with it pre-installed, it felt and looked modern, but it was too much hassle to get anything done. Even installing programs brought up the damn 'are you sure' dialogue box, asking for UAC control, and the whole system felt more like a Survey for windows 7 in my opinion. Anyway, the main point with computers is that if it does what you want, when you want, and how you want it's good. Anything else and it's bad really. I also grew up using windows, starting off with windows 95, and moving up to Windows vista, and after researching Linux and discovering Ubuntu (as well as installing fedora on a USB stick and using it at school :P ) i have never been back to windows, unless for specific tasks. :)

Well, nothing special for me about using Windows. Only because I've been familiar with it, and my musical software is working under Windows.

Windows is very common operating systems in all operating systems. And also every user can use this very easily. Because it is very user friendly and all features ate very good so always every peoples like to use windows operating systems.

Yes, you are right Anurag. I agree with you. But you dont have told about linux operating systems. First, I want to tell you that Microsoft Windows are more popular than other operating systems like linux, macintosh etc. Microsoft Windows and other programs are very user friendly and are available everywhere in the world. You can find softwares on stores also near you. As Macintosh don't provide anybody to install it in your machine yourself or on an assembled personal oomputer. That's why most people use microsoft windows and even in school it is used because of its user friendly environment students can understand better. Second, I would like to tell you that linux is an operating system mostly on business machines because it is very flexible to work as any other operating system doesn't provide. Currently I have 2 DVDs of Red Hat Linux 5 Server and 3 CDs of Ubuntu Desktop Version 10.1 May be this information may solve the problems of all. Thank you, Naveen Saini for more queries you can email me on naveennaveennav76 at gmail.com

I have heard and also used Linux. It is not as user friendly as Windows but it is fine. The only problem I see with Linux is that it is not so popular and most people have been using windows. So they would find it hard to switch over to another OS which they are not familiar with. I myself use Windows since there are a lot of games and applications which I love and like to use are in the Windows OS.

Its coz when Microsoft was launched there was nobody to compete with it. Even today the OS and softs this company launches are remarkable. So its dominating in the market since 20 years in its race. And today almost 98.8% people have windows installed and the rest comes mac.

The only reason I bought a Windows is because I couldn't afford a Mac haha. In my opinion Macs are much better. They usually have less problems and are pretty immune to viruses. I don't like their setup of programs and applications as much as Windows. But that is probably it. If I had had enough money at the time I was buying a laptop I would have definitely gotten a Mac.

Mac's are better in a lot of ways, but it depends what you're doing. Anything musical or artistic it is normally better to have a mac around, but for simple office work it's not worth it. Mac's are also getting Steam support now, so the latest games and golden oldies like Half-life are being released for the mac's. Mac's are definitely more expensive, but well worth it, as they're made from very good materials, and very reliable! Hope you get your Mac soon!

Ever since I started to learn how to use computers, Microsoft Windows is the operating system I used. It's a user-friendly operating system though you can get lots of bugs with it. Most of the schools here were using Microsoft Windows operating system. I'm still learning the ropes with Linux Fedora and OpenSuse.

While I still do have a Windows desktop, my main computer that I use every day is a Macbook Pro, so I don't really use Windows much anymore at home. I still have to at my job though. My son is taking computer networking in college so he is learning a lot about computers and operating systems and he was telling me about Ubuntu. I know nothing about it but he says he is going to switch over to it on his machine. I think it's great that there is another product out there to challenge Microsoft's virtual monopoly in the operating system market. I intend to learn more about it myself and maybe put it on my desktop PC. Hopefully, it will gain in popularity and more people will start using it.

Hi ntpspe! I dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 on my computer. Although I think Ubuntu runs smoother on my computer, I prefer using Windows. I think many people use Windows is because of how simple it is to use. Although Ubuntu and other Linux distributions are free, people might not be able to know how to operate it. When I first used Linux, I had trouble installing programs. That is why I think many people use Windows instead of free alternatives. Also, many good programs are written for Windows instead of Linux.

Hello there :) You see, Mac, Windows and Linux are being stereotyped atm. Like Mac for those who are into graphics and design interests, Windows for a typical user and Linux for those who likes tweaking with their computers. I want a Linux myself but then most programs and games I'm interested on aren't compatible with it. So I'm basically stuck with Windows.
