Hi Grace beta, it is not applicable to all slum dwellers, but usually criminals take shelter amonsg them, the blame goes to slum dwellers, in my country government is taking appropriate steps to educate and raise standard of slum dwellers.. Thanks for sharing. Cheers. Professor. .

There are far too many reasons why people are in such a tough spot in life. Let's face it, life is far from fair a lot of the time. There are people out there that just do not try to better themselves. There are people who think things will happen. Unfortunately, that is the wrong attitude to have out of life. Things may happen after a while, but you just can't wait around for them to happen. Sometimes you got to take steps to make it happen and being lazy can bring you straight into the slums or at least a very poor living situation. Other people it is just more complex. There are times where they are never at the right place, at the right time. They are always just a step behind everything and they just can't get that one good thing going that would rise them up beyond their situation. Sometimes, there are a lot of circumstances that go badly and people find themselves in the worst possible place in their lives.

ya majority are uneducated, or they are forced to be uneducated due to their living condition.

i think theyre just unlucky to be born and raised there but they can choose a better life and get out of there soon. It depends on their situation. We cannot really stereotype since we can point it out to alot of factors and reasons. Some are capable while some are not.

possibly simply unlucky or can't make rational and smart decisions in life. when your really unlucky, opportunities don't seem to come no matter how hard you work. but i think this one happens once in blue moon. near to impossible. 'coz when you strive hard, there is usually a price to enjoy. when you're not rational and can't make smart decisions, opportunities will be gone and may possibly won't come again. this can also include choosing not to work, choosing not to study and others.

I think it's just in their environment, the way they speak and act.. But there are also lots of talented people in the slums.. If given a chance, they can do far better or equally with those who haves in the community.. Well, some we may say are lazy or just plain unlucky.. But there are also those who are well to do that are like those lazy and unlucky guys and gals.. And there are also lots of talented people who are rich.. I guess we cannot really generalize people because we are all the same, rich or poor alike.. But then, I think, the level of intensity to win to survive is greater with the poor than with the rich ones, what do you think?

hi grace, i know a lot of them, although i dont live with them. they get tough because of the environment and the people they need to brush shoulders with daily. but most of them are educated. they have gone to school.. some have finished high school. others might have even finished college although they were not lucky to find jobs for several conflicting reasons.. some are probably just not dreaming higher than what they have/own now. others maybe just are too lazy to work. others are happy go lucky. others might just dont have the capacity to earn.. or others may just dont know how to earn legally. whatever it is, one thing they should learn.. they should not try "owning" what is not theirs.. especially properties of private people. ann

All of the above. And,to add more, some are educated just unlucky to find a good job and can't afford to rent better place to live in. Some are not lazy, just thinking practical not to spend their money more on rented house than food and other necessities. So many questions, but only those people who lives and survive in those places can give us definite answer to this question.

I don't think that people in the slums or what we call now informal settlers are uneducated, they are just merely unlucky. Although they did not choose it to be, they simply lack the ability or the credibility to upgrade their life status. They could be born from poor parents but definitely they still dream of rousing themselves from the poverty that they are facing right now. What they need are opportunities and the confidence that they can do it to elevate themselves. The government should look into these and give these informal settlers something that they can be busy with to earn a decent living.

They are a combination of what you said. Some maybe are intelligent but they become uneducated because of poverty. Some are unlucky in the things they want to achieve maybe because they have not yet discovered what really they should be doing or what are their purpose in this world. unless they will discover God's will in their lives, being lucky or unlucky, they'll know that God has a better purpose for them. Then, some are just plain lazy :)
