It depends on your hardware configuration, operating system, and your attitude on running a software. Attitude is important because some people prefer to install and forget, while people like me prefer to have some control over how the anti virus software works.
I have used software like Avira, Avast, McAfee, Norton, VBuster, Panda, F-Prot, and AVG. So far I found Comodo Internet Security Premium, which is free, to be the best in meeting my needs, and in giving a high level of protection.
CIS 5 is lighter than CIS 4. A full scan by CIS 5 takes about one hour less than CIS 4.
In an independent Proactive Challenge Test run by Matousec only CIS 4 scored 100%. CIS 5 has only recently been released, so there is no result yet.
If you are the 'lazy' type you can set CIS to remember what to do, so you will not be bothered with pop-ups asking you what it needs to do.

for me there really isn't a perfect antivirus program. but if you're looking for one thats free, i can recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. its an official add-on to the Windows OS and you can get it free from their site. the only requirement is your Windows OS should be genuine. if you pass that, then everything is fine.
i've been using it on my desktop and my laptop, and so far haven't had any problems.

Avast and AVG are the two best so anyone of them is good to pick. Try both of them and see which one you like the most.
I also recommend to download an antispyware programs also, so download Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. I said to download both antispyware programs cause both are great and what Malwarebytes can't pick up, Superantispyware can and what Superantispyware can't pick up, Malwarebytes can. So Malwarebytes and Superantispyware is a must if you want more protection in your computer.

It really depends on many factor, from harware up to your personal liking. I'm using Avira since... uhm, 5 years ago, if I remember correctly, and I never had any problem, until now. Then, I would reccomend it, but there are sure many other free AV you can try, like Avast (which I personally don't like) or AVG. If you feel lucky, you can even take a look at the free antivirus that Microsoft is offering: Microsoft Security Essential. Never tried it myself, but it's a free antivirus; so, if you really want...
