I like to rate positive when something immediately pops up and grabs my attention to the great added portion of the discussion. I not much of a negative rater as we are not to use this so loosely. Just because we do not like what the poster inputted does not mean we should rate negative. As a flip side of a conversation is another portion of the quality reasoning myLot intended when it started.
The only time I would rate negative, and in my five months have only had to do once was when a member clearly had some difficulty with the English language but after reading his post twice I clearly understood, well here comes this Idi@tic member and writes something really mean and vulgar and says dude learn to speak the Language before you post.
Not only is this against myLot to taunt someone for their language barrier that was down right wrong and he was lucky we were not face to face in a discussion because I would have snapped, as I was very proud for the member, not only was he new it was a great discussion one that afforded him 85 responses!
At any rate it is my opinion that many members on here have it all wrong about rating negatively as a discussion does not mean every responder has to love and be pleased with your discussion and only post formality type of discussions.

I tend to rate liberally. If the posts in the topic are fluent and add a bit of info or a perspective then I rate it it positively.
I have rated a few as negative in the past. The only posts I rate negative are the ones that clearly violate the TOS. The last post I rated negative was in a discussion where the respondent replied with saying I hate you, grow up and a few other nasty choice words. This is clearly a violation and I did rate it negative, as well as reported the user.
Other times when I rate negative is when someone has decided to spam the conversation with an affiliate link. I really don't appreciate those folks at all. Once the discussion is deleted, so are everyones earnings.
I totally agree with Hardwork'n Girl. The rating system often times can be used to rate the opinion or perspective rather than quality of the post. There have been a number of post I don't agree with or get me stirred up. Those post I may or may not rate as positive, but they certainly don't get a negative....I feel other people should be able to express themselves without fear of loosing their community rating.
