Knowing words, or the application of words tends to indicate study, with study comes knowledge and wisdom. Through knowledge and wisdom comes proper application with respect to time, place, and circumstance. Study broadens one's horizons with multiple facets of knowledge and insight.
Being able to express one's self through a rich vocabulary breeds respect from our peirs and superiors. While anyone may pick up a word or a phrase, it is the inivudial who is able to express themselves on a continuing basis who will find this extra measure of respect.

Indeed a most worthy post with the possibility of deep insight.
We are in an era of transition. Concepts and adages of days past are beginning to fade as generations progress. I am uncertain if this post was not recognized due to the unfamiliarity of it, or if there was a general lack of interest in such philosophy. Either way a sad shame indeed.
To my knowledge the phrase started in the U.S. back in the 1920's as a catch line for selling encyclopedias. This phrase held on until the mid to late 1950's. Certainly a few generations have passed and culture has changed immensely since that period.
For those of us who remember such ideas, phrases, and adages, we can still pass them on and keep a bit of history alive for future generations to ponder.
