I find myself a little bit stupid starting this discussion. Well, I just need input from mylotters who are also a teacher.
My first job after I graduated from high school was teaching. I was an english tutor for kids. And because of some problems, I quit and started to work in an office. Then I quit and tried to help my aunt in business. Now, I am working in an office as well, bigger than my first office. And doing part time teaching.
I plan to quit my office job and do teaching full time. I enjoy teaching.
Please share the good things and the bad things of being a teacher..
thx for sharing..

Hi! First of all, I am not a teacher myself but, my mother and uncle are. My uncle is a SPED (Special Education) professor and evaluator. What I see from them are patience and love for their students, they handle Children with Special Needs, to be exact children with ADD, ADHD, Autism, Speech Delay, etc. There are no "bad" things of being a teacher. If you are curious with the pay/salary, being a SPED-Speech Therapist makes a lot. You just need to really know your student and love them and oh yeah..Patience!

I was a high school teacher from my country. That is my first real job after college. I do part time while I was studying so I don't consider that as real job. In my first year of teaching I taught elem kids. There were so lovable and naughty at the same time. But I really enjoyed teaching them. Here are the good things in teaching Elem kids :
1. They are so loving and listen to you eagerly.
2. Easy to discipline because they are still young.
3.They are very thoughtful, they will give you cards, letters, or drawings and even gifts during valentine or Christmas and birthdays too!
4. They are eager to learn. Their mind is like a blank sheet of paper that accepts all kinds of things you give them.
5. you will have instant baby in them.
6. The lessons are not difficult, so you don't spend your time studying them.
7. The classes are short since they are still young and based from psychology their attention span is still limited.
Bad things.
1. The students cry a lot and fight with small things.
2. They believe everything you tell them so be very careful to your words.
3. Students learn more concrete examples, so you have to be creative.
4. Some of them do not master how to use the bathroom, so you have to be a nanny to them.
5. Parents always mind their kids. they will complain to you about small trivial things that they think is improper.

Teaching High School Students:
Good:
1. They are already grown ups so petty quarrels are avoided.
2. The have a wider understanding so you can talk to them about their behavior and what they are doing.
3. They are independent, they do not need much of your time hovering on them. They can work with the task assigned.
4. They remember you even after graduation.
5. The paper works are less. You don't have to make plenty of visual aids for them to learn.
Bad:
1. Due to their puberty stage, some of them are rebellious.
2. They are not afraid in cutting classes and they will answer you in a bad manner.
3. Lessons are difficult, so you have to study it so you will deliver the lesson properly.
Bottom line: If theaching is your calling and you are happy doing that no matter the bad things and good things teaching profession has. Go for it. One thing I know for sure is that if you know that your students did good in life you will be happy and proud that you were a part of their achievements. That you are one of the reason why he/she succeeds.
And I also believe that a teacher has the power to instill the good values. They can guide those kids who are on the wrong path of life. Teacher can make a difference.

Where r you from?I am Indonesian and I used to be an English teacher too!!My background actually is social science. After I graduated, I worked for a production house with idealism, and starting from 2003 to 2006 I taught at a course, then from 2007 to 2010 I was a freelance for corporate training. Sometimes It`s hard but it`s fun as you learn a lot, from new vocabularies to how to deal with people from different background. Now, I work as front liner in a foreign cultural body, but I got bored and stressed with the job. I think I am not a good admin, and I miss working with creativity. Teaching, writing, translating, speaking in front of public..maybe those r my passion. Maybe I will teach part time again as I am also focusing on writing and translating job too. I also like sharing in some language learning websites, and i feel appreciated when they say"thank you"after I correct their submissions. Do you teach English too?If I get a job from school, I will teach sociology, but now I want to teach English/Indonesian on part time basis first.

Yes, I am Indonesian. ^^
Nice to meet people from my own country here. Yeah, that's how I feel. I don't really like admin job and I am not good at it as well.
But anyway, I find that we have a lot in common. :P
I like to write and try to part my mind to write, and to do those office jobs. I teach English, yes.
Now I am doing part timing teaching. I teach in the evening in an English tuition in my city. Some people tried to pull me down I guess. That's why I am starting this discussion. haha...

Hi! I have taught in foreign countries and different age groups so I will tell you all I have learned. First thing, being a teacher is a beautiful profession and very noble. You will not be paid much, I can assure you. But other than that, I can think of no downer. You will be shaping young minds. Helping kids or teenagers to grow. It's a beautiful thing to witness, when one of them welcomes you into their life.
Classrooms can be stressful and sometimes you'll need to take a firm hand. If you're not okay with it, you're going to have to learn quickly. I had a class of 20 ten year old boys but it was my favorite. Sure they were rambuncuous, but they were good natured boys. Also, if you give a warning, make sure they know you mean what you say. If not, they'll just break all the rules.
It is so fufilling to be a teacher. Like I said, pay is rough so you might have to get a second job, and maybe you might be under a principle that you dislike, but do it for the kids. That's what makes it worthwhile. I wish you luck and hope that you will love teaching as much as I do.

As we all know, education is very imortant because it can change our lives.Teaching is a joyful and noble job.and one good teacher in a lifetime may sometimes change a delinquent into a solid citizen.Henry Adams said:"a teacher affects eternity;he can never tell where his influence stops",the man who can make hard things easy is the teacher. This profession deserves the special recognition and respect.
As a matter of fact i have ever a dream to be a teacher. However it is always easier said than done.i think you can make some efforts to make your dream come true if you are really interesting to teaching.

Teaching is a noblest profession that exist since time in memorial because of the dedication and knowledge that they are transferring to their students. One can't measure how far will the impact you can create because of teaching. It is time demanding because you have to bring some of your works at home just like checking papers, making grades, designing lesson plans. You wear many hats when you are a teacher, you become a counselor, adviser, communicator, disciplinarian and a friend. You extend your dedication to much in order to shape your students to become a better individual. To be a teacher is pretty easy you just have to do some lectures, conduct a tests, and then give your student's a mark. However to be a great teacher is totally difficult because your day doesn't really necessarily end when the bell rings.Being a great teacher is real hard but it is all worth it.

I'm a corporate trainer and I teach adults. I guess, you can still call me a teacher although the official term would be trainer.
I love my job. I love being a conduit of knowledge for my trainees. That look on their faces when they learn something new, that "Aha!" moment, is something I like seeing on my trainees faces. And there's great personal satisfaction to be had whenever one of my trainees get promoted.
