When you are cooking what is the first ingredient that you put on the pan? Is it the onion or garlic? My husband and I have been arguing about this. Its not a serious argument, just a sort of starter while we are cooking, I used to put the onion first while he is used in pouring out the garlic first on the pan.
How about you? What do you think, which should come first? The onion or the garlic?

Usually, I put the oil first.
When I'm cooking, I don't use onion a lot. Because I don't like it much. But I use garlic frequently.
You see, people in different countries use various ingredients when doing cooking.
But when I'm making western soups, I first put the butter, and then onion, no garlic.

Hi,
I love to put both to my dishes when I am doing the cooking.
Actually I prefer to add more garlic to my dishes as it gives very
fragrant smell and I just love it.
Even my son also love to eat garlic, but not my husband,he dislike garlic.
Lasttime I always add both onion and garlic together and I noticed garlic
will easily turn into black before the onion is getting brownish.
At last, my mother in law taught me,never add garlic first as garlic easily get
cooked, but for onion,it took slightly longer time to cook. Therefore,
I will add onion first and saute them for while, then only I will add my garlic.
It does turn out good...Not to forget I also like to add ginger to my cooking,it
definitely give fragrant smell.
Give it a try!!

I think it depends on how we are trained at home. In my case, in our house we usually put union first then garlic. While my husband family put the garlic first before the union.

I cook the garlic first, but sometimes when I watch cooking shows onT V, they say that you should put the onion first to avoid burning the garlic, but I still cook the garlic first, I think the dish is more flavorful in this way. :)

I am from India and according to local practices we put onion first always while cooking.I dont know why but its just like that here always.
Many dishes we make at home contain both onion and garlic and we generically put onion in hot oil and then garlic paste after some time when onion becomes little red.

We like to add the garlic first to a pan. They are pretty strong and you need to cook them a long time to break it down. But if I would add the onion first it would break down faster and become mush. So I would add the onions after the garlic and then add the other meat or vegetable ingredients later. Both are pretty good things to add to a dish to enhance the flavors of it.

Every time I saute food, I put in first the garlic in the pan and wait till it's golden brown (in low fire of course) then the onion next to it. That's what I am used to but I can see some cooking show that there are time the onion is cooked first before the garlic. I don't know I didn't have formal cooking lesson but who cares, what I am after is I can cook delicious meal for the family.

I have never really thought about this before. But I do tend to put the onion on the pan first. Don't ask me why though, because I have no idea! I guess it is just a habit...

I always put garlic first after the heated cooking oil. I love roasted garlic, we even cut it into thin strips like chips and eat the excess roasted garlic. After the garlic are the onions, to avoid over cooking and to maintain its crispy and at the same time sweet I always put it second. I experienced while cooking I first cooked the onions before the garlic, the garlic caramelized and it was hard for me to stir the pan and to cook the garlic. I hate the taste of raw garlic.

I learned from a cooking show that you have to put first the garlic in the pan because onions burns or cook faster than garlic, I think because onion has a thin translucent skin making it more heat unresistant. So whenever I cook with onions and garlic I add first garlic. It will give a satisfying taste to your meal the longer it is cooked. But avoid over cooking for it will give the food an unpleasant smell after eating. :)

I like Garlic and onions, but don't usually use much Garlic when cooking..the recipes I've used in the past would say onions first to have them browned before adding other ingredients..I'd add the (Crushed) garlic then during cooking to let it infuse some..and now,I'm getting hungry!

I would say onion. Onion can tolerate a high heat for a decent amount of time. Garlic can burn and break down before the rest of the meal is done. Nothing grosser than burned garlic in your meal. Plus, I don't use garlic much it doesn't always agree with me.

Well, it depends on what you are going to cook. When I'm going to stir fry something I put the onion first, but if I just want some ajillo style then I go straight to the garlic.
I love both tastes, but maybe I cook more often with onion, as the taste goes well with a wide range of food

In our country, most people put the garlic first since they thought that in basic cooking it should be the first to be placed in the pan when cooking. But recently, their belief is changing. They have analyzed that onion should be the first since it doesn't easily get burned than garlic.
