How to discipline the children?

I'm a conservative type person. I raised with the same kind of family. My parents usually hits me when I do wrong. They scold me in front of people and shouting me. Now, I have kids and I noticed that I adopted the same with my parents. I want to change the way I used to be and in democratic way. How do you discipline your children? How do you handle your kids attitude?

For myself, I prefer not spanking unless circumstances warrant it, I prefer to take something away that the kids really like and they have to earn it back. With my son, he likes his cartoons, so if he gets in trouble, he loses cartoons for a certain amount of time. If my daughter gets in trouble, she loses something she likes alot. I noticed too much spanking loses effectiveness.
