Well, it all depends on what you are teaching, and the individual personality of your child. One method that tends to work well for most kids is, instead of sitting them down for tedious practice, to instead take advantage of all the little learning opportunities in life. For example, my parents would always get me to practice reading the names of stores as we went walking. When I was younger I was just supposed to point out or find certain letters, and then progressed to reading simple words, and more complicated signs. When in the store, get your child to help you. Everything you put in the cart, tell them, "this is two dollars" and then the next thing "this is 3 dollars. So if we already have two dollars of stuff in the cart, how much do we have now?" and so on. My father would always round to easy numbers when we were little. They can help you keep a running total, and once I was older my dad would get me to help figure out the tax (15 cents for every dollar of stuff in the cart, so I was doing multiplication.) This method is easy; it just takes a few minutes here and there. The results are great, though, as the children feel grown up and like they are helping, rather than like they are being forced to do something boring.

well, my niece lives with me and she s a toddler and at that stage they want autonomy so i teach her by teaching her to be independent and let her do things she wants to do, unless their out of line - then i intervene by explaining her why its wrong. also, her mother teaches her stuff like counting, singing etc everyday, you know, give the child attention. also, make it as fun as possible for the child, boring stuff tend to get forgotten. anyway, it really depends on the childs age whats the effective way, and also depends on the child, all people are unique, so its good to spend time with the child and figure out how he/she learns the best. but there are theories that make it easier like freud and erickson. =)
