I have a bad neighbor

Friends, the window of one room of my house opens to the west, this room is not used usually. Today I opened that window, I saw branches of ‘bougainvillea’ there, it is a plant that flowers but the branches have spikes, it covers my window. The branches come from neighbor’s side; he and his wife are not good, very quarrelsome.
Some told me to cut, some told to spray acid or some chemical, which will dry out the leaves and kill the plant. Just puzzled, what to do? Do you have such neighbors?
My experience says, ‘NEIGHBORS CAN BE WORST ENEMY, BUT RARELY GOOD FRIEND’.Share your views and advice too.

Here where trees are not many in the neighborhoods.
I am greatful to have three in my yard helps keep the heat out of house .
And wehn neighbor complaine that the limbs of the tree over her yard giving shade she did want bet her house is hot! we cut back the limbs to the fence line!
I also have a ceder that is very tall and in he middle of summer she wanted me to cut it all the way down.
it goes straight up doesnt go over either of our houses.
and if I had it trimed at that time of year would have killed it you dont trim trees when the sap is up.
I havent cut it doesnt hurt either of us and it beautiful to me.
BUt I wouldnt want my tree limbs to block her veiw are be next to a windoe hats just not right.
You can cut away the part in your yard if you want get it out of your window

Whatever is hanging over onto your property you can do whatever to it. I would definitely pour acid on the branches to get rid of them if you can't cut it down because of the spikes. If it was an apple tree whatever is hanging on your side of the fence is yours to eat so if these branches are hitting your window you have the right to do with it as you wish. Good luck to you. Its a shame that neighbors can be so mean and nasty.

I dont think i have the right to kill it, or eat the fruit if it is a fruit tree, it is better to talk to the neighbor when he is back on Friday..
Thanks for sharing your views.

Dear Professor,
You should find out what the laws say regarding this. Those laws are different depending on where you live. For instance where I live if your neighbor has a tree or branches that hang over into your property you are entitled to cut them down. So, find out what your rights are and if you are allowed to cut the branches do that, rather than being sneaky and poisoning the plant. It is better to be straight forward so the nieghbours know where you stand.

I think you should tell them the problem rather than just doing what others adviced you to do. If doing so without informing the owner of the vougainvillea, it might caused you more trouble. You said that even rarely happened to befriended with neighbors, who knows, they might like your attitude of asking persmission to them first before doing anything to their property. Such act shows respects. Now, it's you who can judge them for you are the one near them.

dear professor,
i have the same neighbor as yours!
my windows are screened from the outside which is the boundary of their lot from mine, so if i want to clean my screen, i will have to ask them to let me in their property before i can clean it - which i never ask them to. i clean the screen from the inside of my house. purpose of the screen is not to let the mosquitoes in. but now plants also cover it and surely when its branches gets thicker, air would not get in.
i have before requested them to trim their plants but they badmouthed saying it is their property.. etc... etc.. so i never approached them again.
i am thinking now of how to kill the plant without their knowing or there will be a big issue if they find out.

Hi Professor,
I would knock on their door anyway and tell them nicely that their plant is growing onto your window and ask them if it would be ok if you trimmed it back or if they did. They might be quarrelsome with each other but I doubt something like this would bother them if you asked in a nice way. I would not spray a chemical on it which could ultimately hurt the whole plant or just start cutting without talking to them first. Knowing me, I'd probably just ignore it if it was a room and window that I rarely used.

hi professor the owners of that bougainviella have to be told to contain their plant as it cannot be allowed to cover your window; you can talk to them and ask them to cut it back as its covering your window. then if they still do not do anything You will have to contact the police as that is encroaching on your property.I do not have that problem as I live here in a retirement center. but I know that their bougainvillea should not be against your property at all.As you daid they are pretty but the thorns are wicious. Why on earth is it growing on your wall it does not belong there?

Hi Professor~ I'm sorry to hear that you have such nasty neighbors!
I thought all of the suggestions that you were given were great!
I know what it's like to have a miserable neighbor because I've
had one for the 30 years I've lived in my apartment! She is
pure "evil" and no one in the neighborhood can stand her, she's
a trouble maker, the Landlord knows and she won't move and so
far we haven't been able to get her legally thrown out. So about
5 neighbors that lived under her apartment have left throughout
the years because of her! We have never spoken directly, only
through police! Do whatever you need to do for yourself Professor!
Sometimes, you just can't be nice and I loved your quote.

We just lost one of our neighbors over the weekend because their house was foreclosed. They really were good neighbors too, before we moved into our house they would watch it for us and even park one of their vehicles in the driveway to make it look like someone lived here. However, the neighbor on the other side really gets on my nerves, she is mean and is constantly complaining about my dog, who is a hound dog and by nature likes to bark. She has really make me mad a couple of times pushing things through the gate at the dog and such.

I dont know my neighbours personally. They sing all night with a volume put up so high enough to be heard by the whole town. Some neighbours can really be insensitive.

I have a very nosy neighbor and ones that keep to themselves, but are careless. The nosy neighbor actually collects our mail when we are gone for the weekend and often times opens it and writes a letter saying he accidentally thought it was his. the neighbors that are careless have an enormous tree growing in their side yard, but do not maintain it. The tree has started to come onto our property and right where we park one of our cars. the sap from the tree gets onto our cars and is very frustrating. We have had a tree trimmer come to trim the tree although it is not ours because of this inconvenience. if I were you, I'd have the plant killed or uprooted because your neighbors are just too careless to do it.

Hi professor,
Fortunatly I have very nice neighbors. Just last week we talked about some ivy that had grown so much that it was causing trouble in my garage roof. The conversation just came up, I did not bring the issue. The next week he hired a man to cut it and take it away in spite of being fair that I paid for some of the work. He just said: "Never mind".
In my country, you can lawfully cut any part of a tree or greenary that crosses to your property. Usually neighbors talk about it firt and I agree that not many are as nice as my neighbor.
Can´t you cut the part of the plant that is in your property covering your window? And if it´s not in your property but it hides the sun from the window, can´t you make him understand your point of view?
I´m sorry you have such a bad experience with neighbors: mine have mostly been very good.

Hi Professor2010! Have you asked your neighbour to remove the plant from your window? Maybe try that first.
I feel that one should be very nice and considerate of one's neighbours. If they are not very friendly, that doesnt mean that you should back away or show them the same kind of behaviour as them. Keep being your friendly caring self, and soon you'll win them over. And even if you don't manage to win them over after some effort, its not your loss. It's their's. Cuz you maintained your self-respect and dignity, and at the end of the day, it counts.
Some tips to win them over:
1. take some delicious food over to their house - a dessert is usually appreciated by everyone.
2. If they are old, offer to do their grocery for them or mow their lawn, etc.
3. Give a small gift (doesnt have to be on an occasion), such as a small candle or set of candles. This can usually be bought at a garage sale for under $1.
If you make an effort with sincerity and good intentions, you won't fail. You will be surely be rewarded for it.
