I live in Canada. Here, it is autumn and winter is quickly approaching. Ourwinters get quite cold and we usually get a fair amount of snow. I have two small dogs, one is a chihuahua and the other is a Pug. For the cold weather I have several winter coats and sweaters to help keep them warm when they are out. I was wondering if others felt the need to get clothing for their dogs and if so is it for fashion or necessatiy?

Some dogs like pitbulls, chihuahuas and dalmations have very short coats and not much undercoat so in severely cold weather they would need a little help to keep warm.

Taco is a cutie. Good for you for cladding your small dogs in wear for the winter.
I am in Canada as well and it can get cold. If it snows and we get wind, the wind chill factor can be hazardous, especially to the small dogs and other animals.
All of the cloths that I have for my dog are practical. They all serve a purpose of warmth as well as foot protection for ice, salt and snow. I don't take her out in the blistering hot sun so her open toe sandals are pretty much useless but just in case, she has something to protect her feet in both the summer and winter. Most important, I find.
I make a lot of her cloths, so they are custom and she has fun fitting the patterns and waits patiently while sewing at the machine before calling her to help with a fitting. She thoroughly enjoys this.
She likes to wear her coats, sweatshirts and jackets. She is up for her winter boots but if it isn't freezing out she will stand in protest.
I make her little sun hats for the summer time too. She really likes them. I can tell this because she stands nicely to have it put on and actually pushes her head into it to get it on. She loves her sun hats. The Doggles she is not so keen about.
Like yourself, dog cloths are practical. Little ones need the protection. Especially my Yorkie since she has no undercoat or fur but hair like us.
A lot of people don't get it but thank fully you are empathetic enough to understand the needs of your little ones.
Just for your information, in case you are not aware, I get some very cool cloths and inexpensively off of eBay on a regular basis. Highly recommended.

Yeah, those pups with no undercoats need a little help when it gets really really cold.

It is always hilarious to see dogs in clothes. I don't know why it makes me laugh but it does. I think it is because dogs are seemingly always pretending that they are people and no animals. So it is a step in that direction of thinking of them as more than pets.

I have tried boots , but gotten nowhere. They do not seem to stay on at all. The salt that put down during winter is not good for doggie paws and I would like to protect my boys from it. Sadly, its jusst not gonna happen. Shirts, coats etc., no problem at all

Hello, fellow Canadian!
My dog has this little coat thing. I usually just have her wear it when it's cold (but if it's really cold and snowy, I wouldn't take her out at all). I think you should get a coat for the chihuahua at least, since they are more fragile.
I don't suggest making it wear clothing just for fashion, though.

Thankfully not all dogs need help with cold weather but those with no undercoat need some help.

I don't like the clothes for dogs that have no other use than fashion. But there are cases when a piece of cloth is needed. I haven't had a small dog yet, but when my previous dog, Nera, became old, she didn't moove so much when we were outside. So, even if she was a medium size dog, she was shivering and I was forced to make a vest for her to keep her warm when we went out. I had also made it from an impermeable material, so it kept her dry, too.
Here's a picture of Nera, dressed up with her winter coat. Don't be fooled by the rays of the sun, it was a terribly cold day.

I believe any dog, big or little, that is shivering from the cold needs protection. I believe its the owners resposibility to protect them from the elements. We have one big dog, a Rottie/Shepherd cross. He has the short Rottie hair and on the really cold winter days (When the wind chill is minus 3o) he has a winter vest too wear, cause he gets cold. I think you are fantastic to make her a vest! :)

Hi imphavok,
I'm against people who dress up their dogs just for the fashion, with all sorts of ribbons, or, even worse, color their hair. But I also think it's important to dress the dog in winter, especially small dogs or those who live most of their lives indoors, just like it's important to cut their hair in summer, if they're suffering from heat.
I don't have a dog right now, but I just bought a red sweater for my friend's cute maltese as a Christmas present (well, the present is for my friend, she'd have to settle for that, as I don't have any more ideas :) )

My guys usually only wear their clothes forprotection from the elements. My Chihuahua in particlar gets cold very easy and appreciates his coats and sweaters. My pug is far hardier and only wears a coat on very cold days but he has a couple of "Cool coats" that he wears in the summer to help him stay cool. (The coat is made to help keep his ogans cool to prevent heat stroke).
I use to think dog clothes were frivilous but now with having two little dogs and seeing them shiver in the cold weather, I get it.
If your friend is anything like me, she'll love the sweater for her Maltese more than any present you could of gotten for her! I'd rather presents for my dogs than myself! :)
