I made an omelet tonight and it was horrible. I used the eggs that were in the refrigerator because they smelled ok even though the power went out last month overnight when a tornado touched down here. I should have just thrown them out. I took one bite of the omelet and had to throw it out and I don't like wasting food. I was upset because then all I had for my supper was treet. A word of advice to others- if your power is out for awhile be safe and toss the eggs out.

at my house we have 4 chickens which make more then enough eggs for me and my neighbors. they lay eggs once a day so if the eggs go bad i just wait a day. its really great, cheap and much healthier then store bought eggs!

It would be nice to be able to have chickens but I live in the city :( so have to get store bought eggs.

I love omelettes, because I weight train, the protein in the omelettes because of the eggs and cheese is ideal, however whenever I try and make one myself it never turns out right, the ingredients are ok, but it always ends up in bits and a big mess, it's still edible. I am very fussy when it comes to food if it looks or smells funny out it goes, we put our waste food out for compost or for feeding the animals (bread etc) Some foods you can't take risks over, if it's a choice between wastage and food poisoning well I think most if not all would choose to waste it.

it shouldn't actually make any difference at all.
because you're meant to store eggs at room temparature, and not in the fridge.
I admit, I tend to keep mine in the fridge anyway, just to keep them out of the way and tidy, but the recommendation is that eggs should be kept out on the work surface at room temparature. that's why you can by egg stands designed to be out and seen.
however the main reason you are advised not to refrigerate them is because they can absorb flavour and odour from other refrigerated produce, so what may have actually caused your eggs to taste off would have been the odour of any meat in there that may have suffered in the power cut.

Thanks for the advice, Linda. It's a good thing you didn't get sick. I think if my refrigerator was off for all night then I probably would toss the eggs, milk and meats rather than to risk it. They say if it is down long enough for the food to get warm then you should toss it.

From my exprerience, unless the temperature is hot hot, eggs can be kept safe in a cool place of the kitchen (no fridge) for at least a week. But even in the fridge, you must use your eggs in less than a month. A good way to check an egg is to put them in a bowl of water. If they float to much, throw them away.

Although I hate wasting food also, you did absolutely correct. Isn't salmonella related to eggs and I would think it would be harmful as well.

You've wasted food but it's okay.. it does happen like that. I've been wasting couple of times of having a bad taste food that I experimented to cook. :)
Chill.
