i don't think I have except for one time. It was a book on writing a research paper and my teacher made us sign in blood that we wouldn't tear it up! She said she would absolutely take no excuses. She knew it was a great resource and was worried we'd all want to keep it since we were heading to college in the next couple of years. As luck would have it, my little 2 year old sister tore the back off of it and left it in the floor for the dog to pee on! But my teacher told me it was a good enough story that I only had to pay her for the book she didn't want it back! lol!The trouble was that it was absolutely true!! Did you ever damage a borrowed book?

Only once, at it was a book borrowed from a library. I put it in my grocery bag, forgot all about it, and then put some very ripe tomatoes on top. When I saw what the book looked like... well, it was beyond salvaging. I washed it and let it dry, then I tore out whatever pages I could still use (it was a manual). I told the library that I lost it and paid the fine - and also I got my permit there suspended for a year, which was a pain, because I was in college and needed books to study.

oh man! What a inconvenience! wow, I am surprised that they suspended your permit since you paid for the materials. Usually that is all that they require...

Yep, it was from one of the very few English-language libraries here... They are over-crowded and the permit is quite expensive. Just my dumb luck, I damaged one borrowed book in my entire life, and it had to be from them.

Hhahaah... wow, so dogs may really be eating our homework. I have damaged a borrowed book.. I spilled water on it and the cover of the book was maroon and it bled into the pages. I still haven't returned it... haven' seen the person forever, so there isn't an end to the story yet.

I guess you can buy another one so you can "return" it when you see them again! lol!

Yeah... but the original book is an old one... so I can't get the same copy now... and you can tell the difference with the newer versions. Hopefully she won't care since she hasn't asked me about it for a long long time. You can still read from it.

I have.. a library book. Several. I used to read in the bath, when I was maybe 15 - I thought it was so awesome to do so. I stopped though eventually when I started dropping the books in water. However, the library never ever fined me for any of them - I'm still not sure why to this day - maybe because they didn't think I did it, or maybe because it wasn't "damaged enough"? Either way I got out of that one nicely!

i don't think I would want to read in the bathtub. It would seem uncomfortable to me. But it sounds like that's a good thing anyway! I would hate to drop a book in the tub of water!

Hi Macdingolinger!. I never damaged others book because I quite neat person if related with book. My enemy is usually a rain, and if I forget to bring umbrella, no others place to wait the rains to stop. Its usually my books become a victim and lucky its never others books. I think in case its usually my friend who damaged the books they borrowed from me, its really annoyed me sometimes and the next times they wanna borrow again I will made a reason so they won't borrow it.

I don't generally loan my books out anyway. At least I do not loan out the ones that I am specifically collecting. i may loan out the others. But I don't recall anyone ever tearing up any of them.

Not only damaged but I lost it. When I was an elementary student, the library was my favorite hang out place. I frequently borrowed Nancy Drew books from the library but I also lost two books. My mother had to replace the books I've lost but she didn't get angry at me at all. She was just glad that I'm into reading books than other things and my mom just told me to be very careful next time.

I lost a borrowed book once. During high school, we are issued textbooks which we are to keep safe & return to the issuer on the end of the school year. I realized I lost a certain book & dont know where to look for a replacement. It cannot also be found on bookstores. Good thing that one of my teacher happened to be my mom's teacher when she was in high school too, in a diferent school though. She was so nice & good hearted that when she learned about the lost book, asked me to go to her house to I can help her look for the book in her storage room. So I had the book free & was able to return to the issuer my complete textbooks before the school year ended.

No, I haven't done it before, and I hope I would never do it in my life. :) I love reading books. So no matter it's my own book or borrowed one, I read it carefully and don't damage it. Books I've used for many years are still kinda new. And my friends always say high about it. :)

I am very careful with books as well. This one happened while I was a teenager still at home. But I think I must have learned my lesson because it's not happened since! I respect the book!

Cute story you wrote about! I dont think I ever personally damaged a book that I had borrowed but about a month back my son decided to rip apart this library book that I had borrowed for him. There was no saving it! It was destroyed! I took it to the library and told them to bill it to me since I was in a hurry and didnt have money on me at the time. Today I went to pay it and they made me pay $20 for it. It was an old beat up dumb book so it kind of sucks they made me pay full price for it but whatever I didnt give them a hard time I just paid it.

Well it is kind of frustrating simply because my son ripped it up or I wouldnt have to be shelling out money for it. I would never spend $20 to buy my child a book for a present so having to pay that much was not cool lol. They will probably use that money to buy another book as that book was so old that it probably cant be bought new any longer.

At first it sounded frustrating to have to pay full price, but then after a little bit, I thought they would have to pay full price to replace it. So it kinda made sense...sorry. Look at it this way, you provided a brand new book for kids to enjoy for years to come!

I'm careful to my books and to the books that I borrowed. But there is one time that one of my friend borrowed a book to me that I recently bought from that time.I have read it twice already but still looks good as new. I lend it to my friend and she returned it to me after two weeks wrap in a plastic bag and when I look at it I'm very disappointed on how my almost brand new looking book turned into a mesh. At that time I just want to give it to her but I don't want to embarass her so I just keep the book.

That's pretty sad really. Hopefully you will no longer lend your books to this particular friend. The books I purchase new stay like new for a very long time. I don't understand how they can look so old for other people!

My children do all the time! I've had to ban them from bringing library books home from school because they leave them out where the little ones get their hands on them and rip them up. All of my children love going to the library. I try to keep their books in my room when they aren't using them, but sometimes I forget to pick them up when they're done, and they end up ripped.. or sometimes they just rip them while trying to turn a page. However I personally have never damanged a borrowed book.

Sheesh! That can get expensive after awhile. I remember those days though. My grandson loves to "tear into" a good book! I mean that literally too!

When I was still living a home my parents' dog once damaged a book that I had to return to the school library. Part of the cover was missing. I was worried when I had to return it, because I was sure they would ask me to replace it, and I was hoping that it wouldn't get too expensive. When I got to library and returned the book I told the librarian what had happened, but she just smiled and said "Don't worry about that, we can repair it, and you don't have to pay for it" That was a very nice surprice and I was very happy.

There have been a few times in my school days when a borrowed book had unfortunate accidents. I would do what I could to repair the damage if I could. i never had to pay or replace the book. As long as you are honest about what happened, most people show understanding.

I did, I borrowed a hardbound book by Dan Brown, because its expensive to buy one, I accidentally left it in our house one day when I went to school hastily, when I got back home, the back cover was eaten away by our dogs and every page has bite marks...that i have to buy a brand new one to return to the person i borrowed it from.

My brothers damage most of the books they borrowed so we try to repair it because maybe we can't borrow next time if we will return it in worse condition.

This is true. Or you'd at least have to pay for any damages that might have occurred while the book was in your care!
