The end of the world, not in 2012.

I just read an article on Yahoo News stating that the Mayan prophesy of the world ending in 2012 is off by at least 50 years.
Taken from the article: A new critique, published as a chapter in the new textbook "Calendars and Years II: Astronomy and Time in the Ancient and Medieval World" (Oxbow Books, 2010), argues that the accepted conversions of dates from Mayan to the modern calendar may be off by as much as 50 or 100 years. That would throw the supposed and overhyped 2012 apocalypse off by decades and cast into doubt the dates of historical Mayan events. (The doomsday worries are based on the fact that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, much as our year ends on Dec. 31.)
So this means that the calendar could have already ended, or may not end for another 50-100 years.
This helps debunk the myth that the world will end in 2 years time, which I'm glad to read. It gives us more time to change our ways and make our earth safer for our children to grow up in.
Who knows, in another century, they may say that it's still wrong and the world wont end for another 100 years.

Well, i think everyone should stop talking about this nonsense now. No one in the world can predict the end of the world. Who knows tommorow any big meteor strike into earth with untraceable speed and then earth will be finished without any those silly predictions. I think we should start living in the real world now. And never listen or believe to those rumors.

Well, phooey. That's no fun. You just took the wind out of the sales of a lot of doomsday prophets!
Really, I'm not surprised to hear this. I don't know why we humans are in such a rush to get to the end of the world... maybe boredom? Don't get me wrong, I'm a Christian and I know that Christ will return and then will be the end of things, but the Mayan calendar, huge volcanoes, global warming flooding all the land, asteroids from outer space, polar shift... at least we don't have to worry about the Mayan calendar any more!

Some time ago, Yahoo reported about 2012. I suspected that it could be true. Since a big site like Yahoo had reported it. Past doomsday predictions have not even been reported but the so called event in 2012 has already been reported. Now that you read that it's not going to happen, I don't know how to believe. I suspect that 2012 is the end of the world, or maybe just some astronomical events that's going to turn our earth topsy-turvy. If the world's not ending in 2012, and it's true, I'll be happy because I'll be able to do all the things I want to do. Marrying my dream girl, becoming a billionaire, owning a fleet of BMWs, so on and so forth. But if it's going to end in 2012, 'Touchwood!', then we should just live our lives happily and properly. Make use of every moment we have now.

It could be that the astronomy of Ancient is inaccuracy compared to our modern one.
I feel I want to laugh at this point of view of mine.
However, I think majority of us prefer our generation will continue living in the earth forever.

Well good to know, I'll tell my little sister who has been in panic ever since she saw the movie 2012, she keeps saying if its almost 2012 and if the world is going to end then. But just to be on the safe side I'll try to be a good human being so I wont be unprepared for when the end comes.

Now I Know those that made it a big issue, are really looking like something is wrong with those that even brought it up. Then the other thing that they are forgetting if the Creator wants to end the world man will not be able to predict when that will be. There have been enough natural disasters that have taken place that mankind had no idea were going to happen. Just like when they had the y2k thing going on nothing happened. It was a big hype over something someone thought would happen.
Me personally didn't go for that 2012 stuff. Then they had the nerve to come out with a movie of what would happen if the earth really went off balance. Like it has been doing for the last couple of years. The earthquakes is one major sign for me that the planet is not as stable as it use to be. The hurricanes and floodings that have taken place in the last few years. Could bring something like the movie 2012 about.
I can see the planet falling apart like that they way they have dictated in the movie. Yet man can not predict when something like that will happen.

I had some doubts, but i didn`t belived that it will be the end in 2012 , but as they said there, more 50-100 years are welcome. I do belive that some things will become different soon . I`ve saw in a book in 2000 some interesting predictions . Some of them already been , and some will come, but as there already are some problems, i must say that man said just the true until now, and if he`s right, it will not be the end of the world soon . It will be a cold war and after that some countries will be part of others and so on .

Whoa! You've just busted the 2012 myth!! That is very cruel!
Just kidding about that statement.
I would like to say that the myth about 2012 might be false, but the news articles just doesn't want to give up on that idea just yet. The weather won't give up on that either. The globe has seen its fair share of destructive weather, from the unprecedented floods in Nashville back in the beginning of May, the extreme summer heat wave of 2010 in Russia, a place normally known for its temperatures in the 58-63 degree range (especially Northern Russia), the record floods in Pakistan, one of the strongest typhoons in the Pacific hitting the Philippines, and the weather to come in the next 2 years. I'm beginning to sense that this has something to do with human-induced Global Warming (some called it a hoax this year) and the fact that we are in a warmer period than a few decades ago.
Some things has to change in order for us to live on earth, and to clean up our planet. The only problem is that we are just not waking up quickly enough. The infamous disasters of past hurricanes, including the unprecedented 2005 hurricane season, which contained Katrina, and Wilma, the very deadly Hurricane Mitch of 1998, and even past deadly hurricanes, could've been less deadly or far less costly had we've had the right tools to save these people. Hey, we can't blame mother nature for her destruction, as we can't stop mother nature. We can't just magically destroy or deflect a hurricane quickly.
There were also other myths which have been debunked (busted), such as the Y2K (all computers resetting to 1900 on January 1, 2000) incident, which never happened due to computers handling years very well. We've also had the sparsely known June 6, 2006 (666) incident, but the end of the world never happened. The end of the world would happen in 5 billion years, but the Earth will start to get uncomfortably hot in 550-600 million years due to the suns heat increasing by 10% every billion years.
We've learned every lesson in the past about myths and reality, that myths are not always going to be true, and true things are not myths. We have to learn from our mistakes in order to be better, such as building solar powered houses. It'll be a matter of time until something huge happens, and we can't do anything to stop it.

Don't be mad on me, I'm a Christian in the bible said that "My people will perish because lack of knowledge". What I mean is if we don't know the word of God related to your topic you will think and believe like that. But according to my belief Jesus Christ will return to reign for 1000 years - meaning in His return nobody knows the end of the world...

I also read that when I logged in to yahoo, however, I'm thinking is it really true? It's really hard to tell, I guess all we can do is hope and pray that, that won't happen

In my book, the world ended yesterday.
Every day we go to sleep and wake up the next morning. What is past should be past; what is new should be there for the taking and for the enjoyment of it. That doesn't mean, of course, that we shouldn't read and enjoy History (and, if necessary, learn by our own and others' experience) but we shouldn't set any store by people who say that the World will end tomorrow or next year: what is important is when it BEGINS ... for us!

Yes I am also thinking it is wrong that the world will end in 2012. But it is true that global warming affected our world very much so now every person faces many problems. And also global warming changed our climate. And also now scientist gives us warning that after hundred years a solar storm will be comes in our earth and it will be destroyed everything on earth.

I don't believe that 2012 is the end of the world. But we should pay more attention to protect the earth of ours. With the development of science and technology, our lives becoming more and more convenient, but the environment also becoming more and more bad. Some people just believe the doomsday is 2012. So I think what you said it good news for theirs.
