Is wearing spectacles an ingredient part of being educated or intelligent

I could see majority of those people who wear spectacles most times are either educated or intelligent. Some of them even find it very difficult to read or see without it. Is reading too much affecting the eye power or are it used to read those letters more clearly. Are spectacles an extra fitting? I hope if science finds new remedy to cure completely the eye problems or visions problems I feel most of these spectacles would be vanished. Hope those spectacles manufactures would have to stop their business or change to other.

Hello,
People wear glasses for various reasons. The most significant one is probably to correct their fuzzy vision. This applies for those who are myopic(nearsighted) and hyperopic(farsighted).
Health conscious people might wear glasses too to protect their eyes from UV,sunlight and extensive glare to name a few. These are know to us as sunglasses and comes in different shades.Astigmatism is another reason for wearing glasses.Just for your information this is a conditin whereby the cornea of the eye is not perfectly spherical.Another prevailing reason could be sometimes we simply just want to look stylish.
From my point of view,I would definately say that glasses got nothing to do with a persons IQ.It is merely an extraordinary discovery of science to ease the human life

I agree with julianmac. I am nearsighted so wear glasses and have been doing so for over 20 years. I have tried contact lenses for a year but they irritated my eyes and I had to have two different types as my left eye was slightly elongated, this due to weaken muscles. It is possible to have laser surgery for my type of problem but it is not covered by my medical aid and I do not have the money to pay for it myself. I do not consider myself overly intelligent so do not believe wearing glasses has anything to do with ones IQ, nether does reading a lot. Some people love reading for the joy they receive from reading and not necessarily for study, although all that reading may improve their knowledge. As for glasses becoming unnecessary, I don't think that will happen in our time, although some eye problems are due to overuse like nearsightedness that happens because one is always looking at close things and thus looses the ability to see far, many eye problems are caused by diseases that are not curable, at this stage anyway, and laser technology can't correct the damage caused by these diseases, perhaps only transplants, but that's a whole other subject on it's own.

Some people seem to believe that wearing glasses is a sign of being educated and intelligent. I used to belive that too and admired those wearing glasses. When I came to college, I finally got the chance to wear glasses due to short-sightedness. But at that moment, I no longer felt proud for wearing glasses. Instead, it bothered me a lot and a day never passed without my complaining about glasses. Now most people who have received higher education are wearing glasses, so it should no longer be considered as a sign of being educated.

I'm afraid I can't agree with you on this point. Vision problems mostly arise from too much reading. You may have noticed that people who have been studying for many years are wearing spectcles while farmers seldom wear it. It's already a reflection that too much reading is likely to cause vision problems.
Of course, lack of vitamins is one possible factor leading to vision problems, but mostly, vision problems are attributed to reading.

This is a bit of a "Chicken and Egg" situation,I think..which comes first..the Intelligence or the Eyewear?
It's part of a stereotype,too..people with poor vision need glasses to improve their situation. As one of the main reasons to wear glasses is to make reading easier, the inference then is that they are more intelligent because it could be surmised these people read a lot, when they're prepared to take corrective action to improve their sight. The situation is slowly changing, with contact lenses having been a more expensive option for some time, and in more recent time the availability of Laser corrective surgery has become a viable alternative.. so glasses have become a little more rare to see.perhaps there could come a time where glasses could become old fashioned and get left behind..

Hi Shamrack,
Not really sure what you are asking here. I do know that wearing glasses has nothing at all to do with how intelligent a person is or is not. That'd be nice if they found a cure so that people would not need glasses ever. As it is, there is a Laser surgery that I've heard is pretty successful in restoring some peoples sight. There are many different causes to why a person might have poor eyesight.

On the contrary, many of the intelligentsia got spectacled in the course of attaining knowledge. The culprit for the large part may be books and computers, since they are what most of the elite hook up to. Oh and by the way, I just realized I'm myself am one of those bespectacled geeks although I don't reckon myself to be integral to intelligentsia. Oh yes, you didn't guess it: I'm a notch above those nerds in smartness.

Well its most belief that those who read more wear glasses, to some extent its true, but not all time, eyes are affected due to dim lights and exposed to computers, tv and many other factor.

I find that there are two reasons for spectacles, you are either near sighted or far sighted. For those who are near sighted, it is easier for them to read without glasses, so they do read a bit more and they appear to be brainier because most of the time you see them without glasses.
Now with us who need reading glasses and I am including those who have astigmatism as well as those who are far sighted, it is harder for us to read because we have to look for the glasses, put them on. So for people like me it is easier to learn by listening or by looking at scenes. And usually there is a natural tendency to do so.
It is not that one is smarter then the other or brainier, it is that one tends to do what is easier. I do wish there were a way so that I could have been able to read small print as I did when I was younger and I did not have to put on glasses, first for lazy eye and later in my 50s to make it easier to contrast the text from the background when the text was a light black and the background was a creamy white. Oh and those little knobs that fit on your nose are not exactly comfortable.

Yes, I have the wrong impression to thikn that the people who wear spectacles are intelligent and have good education. In the past I thought they had poor eyesights because they had to study hard. This is why they have to wear spectacles. However, today many things can cause us have the bad eyesights, such as the computer. So the spectacles are not one of the judgments to see a person is intelligent or not.

I don't think so. Spectacles have nothing to do with someone's intelligence. I would say it is more to do with genetics and poor eye-care. I actually pity those people especially those who are forced to wear spectacles at young age. Not to mention it's pricey price which put an extra financial burden. I heard about lasik surgery (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) before where surgery is performed to improve specific vision problems. Maybe this treatment can be the other alternative to wearing glasses and lens :)

Educated and intelligent people have to use their near vision too much for the purpose of reading. Near vision puts stress on the visual system of the eyes, which may cause headache, eyeache & so many problems. So to reduce the stress & strain on the visual system of the eyes, this sort of people have to wear spectacles.

When i was younger I thought wearing eyeglasses makes one look smart. When In grew older I realize that eyeglasses are worn because of eye vision problems. I agree with you that hopefully in the future there will be no need for these without the high payment for the laser eye treatment to correct the vision impairment. I for one also wear eyeglasses, it is an inconvenience since I sometimes forget where I place it being in a hectic workload. I also have to take care that I place the glasses in an area that won't damage it and fold it properly at that. The air moist also causes me to repeatedly wipe the lenses. What a hassle.

Wearing eyeglasses doesn't really mean that a person is smart or educated. It just tells what is very obvious that a person's eyesight is definitely poor. Most of the people I knew who are intelligent are intelligent don't wear eyeglasses or have any eye defects. Most of the Koreans I know have eyeglasses not because they're smart, some of them aren't. In fact one Korean told me that the reason why most of them have poor eyesight is because of their environment. They couldn't relax their eyes because they don't see beyond the buildings. And I think it is true because if you want to relax your eyes after having spent too much time in front of the computer, all of you have to do is look far at least a few meters far to relax your eyes.
