I Thought I Did Welll, But I Failed!

I think this happens to everyone. You find out the opposite of what you wanted or expected.
Well, I didn't actually fail, but I did poorly--a lot worse than I thought. I took a midterm last night and it told me I got a 78! A 78! I spent days and days studying and I thought I understood all the concepts and the test seemed fairly easy to me because I understood it. But then I get a 78, when I was expecting an A! I am completely devastated. I couldn't help but burst out into tears when I saw the grade. I asked the professor if she could kindly send me the answers to the questions I got wrong, because I am completely baffled.
Have you ever thought you did well on something and it turns out that you did poorly? Or did you ever expect to do poorly and you did well?

Firstly I would like to say that if you studied and prepared to the fullest of your potential then a 78 is not failure hon, as if you had just flown by night and took the exam then you would have a reason to sulk that you did horrible.
In this case you did the best you could and you should be proud, as we as humans cannot be perfect all the time and there are somethings we just cannot master. So knowing you I would say Congrats! Sweetie you cannot do more than you are able.
Yes I have also done certain things and walked away thinking YES! YES! Then Later to find I did not do as well, but my comfort was I did my best.
This is what you should be feeling as well.

Thanks for the uplifting response! I tried my best, so I guess that's why I was disappointed when the grade didn't reflect hiw much time I spent studying for the exam. I'm still a bit disappointed to be honest.

That disappointed feeling should only motivate you to do better next time. See life is about challenges, when things come to easy we lose interests. So you can do it.

that happens to the best of us. what you need to do is not beat yourself up about it. You just know that next time you have to do better and work towards doing that, beating yourself up only allows you to stay stuck in that moment of not doing as well as you thought.

I think there have been many times in ones life where you have thought you did Great on something to only find out later that you did not do as good as you thought, or things are not as Good as you were hoping, and then go home and feel quite disappointed as well. Personally I feel these are learning points for us, and the more we have to go thru and experience them usually the better off we find ourselves being in the end.

I have been through that too. It is tougher on my part because it is a Bar exam. I have prepared so hard, resigned from work to give my time and full focus on the Bar Exam. I enrolled in a review center and evaluated that I am ready. I really did good during the exam. I have assessed that I can make it. After 6 months, when the result came out, to my disappointment, my name was not there. I felt so bad because I prayed and wished for it that I will be a lawyer. I had plans what to do when I am already a lawyer. But I did not make it. That made me down when I think and remember it.

like many others, i too have experienced this during my school years though not as often. although it wasn't often, i experienced it at a most cruicial time you could say-when they were streaming us. or basically, those marks decides which school or institution we can enter.
it seems as your education system and mine are different. if it's a 78/100, then that's considered pretty good for me, though i try not to expect too high, maybe because the students i teach are quite weak academically.
for me, it was when i was 16. i was taking biology and a-maths which both of them i wasn't as good. but i was expecting to get maybe a b3 or b4 for both of them. i had the shock of my life when i saw a c5 for my biology-_- i had thought that i would do well for that, i too wondered where i went wrong. in the end, i thought it was all due to careless mistakes on my part as i had thought the test quite easy too and basically underestimated it. i was really disappointed.
on the other hand, a-maths, which i had been failing for a year and a half, i was hoping to get at least a c5 which was a pass near the borderline, but again, had the shock of my life when i saw that i had gotten a2 instead.0_0 ohhh the joy i felt then. it basically made up for the disappointment earlier with my biology. i had made a huge, and i mean really huge improvement there. i was very happy and so were my parents as all of us were worried that i would fail that particular test.
i feel that the reasons for this is due to us underestimating or overestimating the tests. our mentality would be affected thus, which would lead us to having more careless mistakes or lead us into thinking more into the question when it's actually just a simple question being asked.
i hope this has not bored you hehe good day

I feel you do have high expectation of yourself. To me, 78 is already a very good achievement. 70 was my goal when I was in school, of course I do dream of scoring about 90, but it is just a dream. What they say is never true in this context - dream big and you will get big. I only know when I find it easy, many others will also find it easy, and this is always the worst... The score will always be low. On the other hand, if I find it difficult, there is still a possibility I can do well.

I have had it both ways. It is usually expect to do poorly and do well. But for me I tend to think badly in the way that I always assume that I will do badly. I don't know why, but I have always been that way.

I hate it when I think I'm doing well and didn't. That's the worst. If I know I need help, it is much easier for me to get it than with a nasty surprise. I have really been fighting with a couple of algebra classes but I am hanging in there. I just started my second one and I hope I do well.

Do not be disappointed if you lower than you expected. Because that really happen when we expect too much we get less.
Much better we did not expect thing because we can make better. This is my experience too when the board exam going on I did not expect to past it but when the result is coming out I did I pass the board exam for radio telephone operator then.
So, do not be worry if your getting lower. Better luck next time, my friend

This discussion just brought me back memories of when I was a student at university. Often I had the same feelings before and just after an exam. Only to realize that I did poorly. And when I did learn what my mistakes were, it was just carelessness on my part in writing the correct answer.
Back then I just took comfort on the thought that I may have not done well on the exam, I still learned the lesson. And it became more memorable because of the poor grade.

it is really normal for me. every times when there is final exam, i try to not bring to much expectation of what the final result going to be. Because whenever i feel the exam paper is easy, it will come up an average result. But the subject that i feel it's going to fail, it end up with slightly better result than i thought.

I think that we all have hiccups at times. The positive spin off from this is that it is still a pass rate. I always used to beat myself up when I did not get the grades I wanted. What I should have done is think about it, and put it behind me.

I'm very sorry to hear that you did poorly on your midterm. Maybe looking at the answers will clarify things for you. I have not experienced thinking I did well on something when I really did poorly because I generally think I do badly on everything. I have experienced the opposite where I thought I didn't do too well in a presentation, but then my professor complimented me by saying that I did a very comprehensive review of the paper. That felt nice.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. It's a good idea you had to get the answers from your professor so you can see why you got the grade you did. I remember being shocked once when I got a C on one of my Calculus tests. I was so sure I was getting an A.

I was always a first-rate student. When I was a sophomore in high school, we had a test in biology. I did not know a lot of the stuff, and it surprised me. That afternoon, I dug into the textbook and looked up all the stuff on the test that had puzzled me. The next day, the teacher said everybody in class had done poorly on the exam. He said he would not count those grades, and then he gave us the same exam again. I made 96. The next highest grade was 68. The others knew they had not done well the first time, but they did nothing about it. So if you find you have done a poor job on an exam, dig into the study material a little more, and do better the next time.

Both have happened to me! Sometimes I thought I had really blown it only find out I had done really well. Other times I thought I had done very well and I wasn't even in the ball park. I'll just have to accept the fact that my perceptions of things are not always right.
