Does your library have a website and do you use it?

When I log into the website that belongs to my local library I am able to see which books I have borrowed and when I have to return them. I am also able to find information about the books that I am interested in. I am able to see if the books are available at the library, and if someone borrowed the books that I am looking for the site tells me when they have to return them and I can make a reservation online.
If I can't find the books at my own library I use a different site. It covers the entire country, and I am able to search every library in the country at the same time and make a reservation there. When the books are ready, they send them to my local library and I get an email that tells me that the books have arrived.
I use the website a lot, and it very nice to be able to make my own reservations, because I can do it anytime and anywhere as long as I have access to the internet. Later today I plan on making a couple of reservations, that way I can pick up the books next week.
Does your local library have a website? Do you use it? Or do you contact a librarian when you want to make a reservation?

Hi Porcospino!.
I am not a member of any library this few years because its located far from my house and its nearer to book store which allow us to reads their books in the store.
Its will take more than one hours to local libraries and only ten minute to nearest book store thats have complete collection including new books.
I think our local libraries not fully computerized, computerized library usually owned by university.

It must be nice to be able to read the books at the book store, I understand why you prefer that when the library isn't close to your home. In my country book stores don't allow us to read the books, in some book stores there is even a sign saying: "Please don't read the books before you buy them. This is no library". Sometimes when I visit book stores in other countries I notice chairs and people who are reading, and I was very surpriced when first saw that, because I am not used to that in my own country.

I ever ask the owner, they allowed it to increase our people reading interest and they said its also the part to educated our people new knowledge. Like in most developing country reading interest is still low and book store like Gramedia really help in developing reading culture.
They said they now make the infestation and pick the fruit in the future when reading interest already growing and reading become the need of most people.

Yes I use that service all the time on a average of at least once a week.I like it because you can always use your library loan, which lets me get books from other libraries. It also reminds me when books are due so I dont get in trouble with that. Late books use to be a big problem. At one point I even had to pay over 30dollars in library fines so I am glad this system is there to help me remember to return stuff

I also think that this system has made things a lot easier. In the past I always wrote down how many books I had borrowed and when I had to return them, but sometimes I lost the paper and then I forgot when I had to return the books... Now I receive an email a few days before the books are due and that is nice. I also like the fact that I can get books from other libraries in the country and make my own reservations.

My school library has an online site where you can search for the available materials. There you can see whether it's available (on-shelf) or if someone borrowed it. The call number is also displayed in the site. But aside from those things, I find it's not that useful. It's only useful maybe for those finding resources from very far away from school so their efforts won't be wasted going all the way to the library only to find out that the resource they were looking for isn't available. But I don't see much advantages though. The system is also available in the library itself and I find it much easier to just search inside the library where I can immediately go and get the book/s right after searching for it. But I've never really explored out library's website so there might be some other features that I'm not aware of.

At my library we are also able to search the database inside the library and I sometimes do that as well for instanse if I can't find the book that I am looking for and need to find a certain category. Most of the time I prefer to search the database from my home, that way I don't waste my time if the book is not available at the library. On the website I am able to see how many weeks I have to wait for each book and it is nice to get that kind of information as the library isn't that close to my home.

Hi Porcospino,
Thanks for talking libraries. I looooove libraries! Hahaha! :O)
&, I use my local library's website all the time. I'm in San Antonio, Texas. And my local library is Julia Laura Yates Semmes branch. And, I too make heavy use of the Inter-Library Loan program that connects libraries all over the United States.
Just a couple days ago, I picked up both the VALLEY OF THE DOLLS novel and DVD in preparation for writing a Squidoo page on the subject. I'm very excited because I've got some unusual plans for the page. Also, I know the story by reputation, and I love the theme song. However, I never read the book or saw the movie (Isn't there a remake, as well?). So doing this Squidoo page (Okay--they call them "lenses.") is a great excuse to finally read & watch them. Wish me luck! :D
I've been in love with libraries since I was a eight years old. I've been known to spend entire days there, and I scour the shelves in search of unheard of wonderful information. When I lived in Westchester, New York, one of my big dreams was to visit every single library in the County! Hahaha! I didn't get far, but I've certainly visited a lot more than anyone in my circle.
San Antonio also has some amazing libraries. Check out the architecture & antique furniture in the Landa library! Oh! :P I keep forgetting that, as a newby, I can't post links. Oh well! Oh, & as a kid I used to love using the bookmobile! Hahaha!
Such memories!
Sunshine & Blessings,
Giovani

It sounds like we have a lot in common. I also love libraries, and my friends usually get impatient if we visit the library together, because I can spend many hours there
I often use the website to find books, but I also love walking around inside the library. I love exploring the different books and the different parts of the library. At my local library there is a big room in the basement where they keep books that old or less popular than the other books. We are allowed to borrow the books from that room, and I like to have a look at those books when I visit the library. There are many books that I have never heard about and a lot of interesting old books are "hidden" in that room.

You are lucky, maybe your library big enough to afford its own website and allow people to search online whether they have inventory or not. For me, I can't even find an accurate information whether book still in the library or not, because the system they used just not updated.

That sounds pretty annoying. The website that belongs to my local library isn't perfect. Sometimes they forget to remove the book from the database when they remove it from the shelves and things like that, but in most situations the website is very useful. It is a big improvement compared to the libraries that we had in the past.

I'm sure my local library has a website too but I'm not a member because I'm always travelling and I can only buy book when I want to read one. But I'm glad to hear that even a library provides a good service through Internet and makes thing so much easier for the members and readers. Of course it is very convenient for us to be able to make a reservation to certain books that we wanted to borrow and read but are still not available or someone else is borrowing.
Have a nice day

Yes, when you travel a lot it is hard to use the library. I was in a similar situation when I was younger, because at that time I travelled a lot and I lived at many different places. Today I often use the library, and I think that the website makes things a lot easier for the readers. My library recently got a new website and in the beginning there were some problems and we weren't always able to find the information that we were looking for, but the situation has improved and now it usually works pretty well.

Yes, my library has a website and I use it for all of the things you do. It is very convenient. It is actually pretty easy to look for a book or tape I want and have it delivered from another libray branch to the one closes to me. My library has now gone to barcode self checkout which is also very convenient. I think there are less librarians working now with all this new technology.

So do I. I love reading and when I hear about books that sound interesting I make a reservation at my local library and one week later I am able to pick up the books. When the books are ready we receive an email with a number and when we get to the library just have to find that number among the reservations. It was a little confusing at first, but now I know the system and it is usually easy for me to find my books.

Hi,
I doubt the local library at my town here has a website.
Frankly speaking, i only been to that library once and nothing
much to see,not many books.
but of course,it is a quiet place and full air-conditioned.
Maybe I should bring my son there one day.
