A relative was given a bill for a property they have that since it's listed as a certain kind of dwelling the city was charging them an additional $30. The relative was so mad he counted out $30 in pennies and went to city hall to pay the "bill". To the relative's surprise the clerk didn't seem to even bat an eyelash at the change. Though they rolled it and I told them they should of given it to them loose in a box rolled is annoying but loose coin in quanity as payment is SUPER annoying!
I myself recall saving up my babysitting money to buy my HS class ring from a jeweler.
Though I'm thinking now since I owe on a store credit card, no less the one I work at that instead of carrying loose change around in my purse when I work I'll put it as a payment on my card and knock it down a tiny bit but also lighten my purse. Though, I do like keeping change to give to the kids when they do some work around the house w/o me having to give them a hard time.

I don't think that's fair at all that you paid the clerk in coins. He/she is not the one who sent you the bill, the Government is. Sure, she works for the Government, but I don't find that fair at all. I was planning to write more here, but I'm not trying to be a "troll" I'm just stating an obvious fact that what you did was not very fair.

I did not do anything unfair. It was my relative who paid the bill to city hall in coin not me.

I have a lovely story.
Years ago, when we bought gas in the village the owner(who owned a grocery shop) would always leave the shop and pump the gas and we would go into the shop to pay him. He would never ever seem to have 'change' so would 'ay' mu husband in sweeties. So one sweetie equalled five cents. Therefore if 30 cents should be given back to us then we would get 6 sweeties. Get he picture?
My husband took the sweeties calmly and this amazed me as he did not suffer fools gladly or be taken for a fool. Then about a year passed and one day we needed gas and my husband saw the goods truck in the area. So he drove and stopped the goods truck and bought a huge bag of sweeties that would weigh over ten pounds in weight.
He then went and filled up his car and we went into the gas station to pay and in goes my husband staggering under this huge bag of sweeties. So when he was told the price owed, he opened the bag and started counting out sweeties as payment.
The owner protested that he could not be paid in sweeties and my husband looked surprised and said that since he had been receiving change in the form of a sweet then he is assuming that sweeties are legal tender and he calmly counted out hundreds to sweeties to make payment. I had to suppress my laughter and then quickly left the shop. Priceless,
Of course, in future he was never offered a sweetie but given his change in coins. Thank you so much for the memory

Once I had to go an urgent journey.I did not even have the time to go to the bank.ATM facility was not available during that time.I had collected some coins,as it is my hobby.I took these coins which were quite heavy and travelled a long distance by train. On reaching my destination I offered them to a shopkeeper and got paper money in exchange.Shopkeepers give an extra 10% or so,to get coins in my country, due to shortage of the same.I think i kelped him make a profit.

Most people are annoyed with change. There isn't exactly a shortage here of coin... though they say if you save all your pennies in a piggy bank you are actually reducing the value of the dollar. As it costs more to mint the coin than some are worth now days.
So the shop keeper gave you an extra 10% off by paying in change? Some gas stations will give you 5% off your gas purchase if you pay in cash.
Glad you made it safely to your destination with all that coin.

Yes I have and it was out of pure anger! And a lot more then $30!
We use to own semi trucks and had a mechanic working on one of our trucks. He finally got it done and we NEEDED that truck, not only because of the lost revenue but also because our driver needed to go back to work, he had been 'on vacation' while the truck was being repaired. The mechanic called me at 3:30 and told me the truck was done but he would only take cash payment!! No checks because he hadn't had a check from us before. (He had because he had charged us $50 to look at the truck and give us an estimate on the repair!) So at 3:30 I need this truck and the bank closed at 4! I called the bank told them what I needed, they had the cash for me, then I went around town and got the bills in smaller amounts. I had a large box, and I mixed all the bills up, including loose change, some rolled coins. I counted real careful to make sure every penny was in this box. It was over $4000.00!!! Then we went with my driver to get the truck. Needless to say the mechanic was not impressed, but as he tried to count my drivers sat there talking about runing up 275 and getting off exit 13 at mile marker 72 then would swithch to a different run! The guy was furious finally he looked at me and said "Its all here isn't it?"...He had picked up a roll of coins and said "whats this?" and I said "coins. You wanted cash remember!" ... Anyway he finally decided to 'take it' and went to take the box and I said "I have to have that box to return the hand pump that was in it."... he just looked at me and one of the drivers picked up a drive through bag, dumped out the garbage in it and handed it to him! Our driver looked at me after he got his truck and said "remind me to never make you mad!" Later the mechanic went to work for a company and I was in to pick up our truck and for some reason he wouldn't even say Hi to me!

I wouldn't have been so mad if he had told us up front that he wanted to be paid in cash so we would have known, but all the time we talked to him while he was repairing the truck he never mentioned this, until he called that the truck was done. Of course we also weren't to happy with the amount of time he took to fix it. He was a good mechanic and we had him do some other work for us too but he never asked for cash again, although I did offer cash or check!!

Egads that's one heck of a change payment. I guess @ 4k that would of urked me but hey money is money and if ya gotta count it then count it just don't mind us talking other numbers while you are counting it. Priceless! Though it sounds like the mechanic still carries a grudge

A similar thing happened to me once. I lent a friend a pound (£1) when I was younger, and he paid me back a few days later in 1 and 2 penny coins. I told him to pay me back another day with proper coins, yet he inisisted on paying me with the pennies, and when I refused to take them, he simply left it on a ledge or something next to me and told me he owed me nothing any more. It was completely uncalled for, and I told him that I would never lend money to him again. Since that happened, I never have, and I feel it is a pretty justified reason :) It worked well for me too, because I never had to borrow money from him. It was only him that ever had to borrow money from me.
I think it is very disrespectful act in most cases to pay a debt in change, at least if you pay the equivalent of £1 in pennies, such as paying £100 in 50p coins. It is frustrating, and shows that the person who borrowed the money does not seem to care or be greatful enough to at least pay you back properly. If you lend someone a £1 coin, they should pay you back with a £1 coin. You don't lend someone 100 pennies if they ask for £1, so why should they pay you back in 100 pennies?

When my kids were in grammar school I use to empty all my loose change daily and at the end of the month we would take it to the bank and cash it for bills, so they could buy books in the montly book club.
Oh you should have seen their beautiful faces light up and immediately get the monthly flier to prep their orders. It was so much fun to do so. Now my boyfriend's daughter visits us from England twice a year, so we empty loose coins in a pouch all year long, so prior to her arrival we go and cash it at the coin vending machines for bills and we get almost $300 to spend just about anything.
It is a nice saving nitch we have.

It would take me a very long time to accumulate that amount of change. Perhaps $10-20 but not anywhere close to the $300. But you are right it's a nice stash to spend while his daughter is visiting.

hi snuggle bunnies I use Access bus which is specially for those of us who have physcial handicaps. the are is five dollars and forty cent for round trip . two seventy each wasy so I did not ha ve engough ones so one way I had to pay in quarters and dimes and nickels but I did give the driver two dollars and seveny cents. all in change too. I had two pne dollar bills and the seventy cents to go back on so that was not quite so bad. but the dollars and the change will go into the fare box.

It is actually funny but today I took the kids to the Humane Society for a Halloween event that they were having, but I didn't take any money with me at all. That said, I had a ton of pennies in the console of the car. Kathryn wanted to buy a little jacket for her dog that was in their treasure box for $2. Well, since I didn't have cash with me, I had her count out 200 pennies to pay for it. I don't know that they thought it was a pain, but she did get the jacket for Jasmine that she wanted.

I guess that's your relative's way of getting back at that bill collector by giving him extra work to do with the pennies. I wish I had lots of pennies in stock which I could use sometimes. It gives me an idea to start saving those small coins for future use.
