I live in a small house alone, and I have been looking for dog to keep me company. I have looked at many different breeds, both purebred and crossbred. I thought that maybe the myLot community could help me look for the right kind of dog. I do have a job, so I won't be home all the time and exercise will be small. Thank you for looking at this discussion and trying to help me pick the right breed of dog.

Labs are awesome dogs, one of the best all around breeds, but you mentioned that you would not be able to offer it a lot of exercise so a lab might not be the best choice. An ill exercised lab can be quite rowdy. How about a bulldog or a pug or something like that, they are great dogs and don't take the huge amount of exercise. You might consider getting an older dog so you won't have to worry about housebreaking it. Good luck!

Welcome to myLot helghast.
Choosing the right dog is a difficult decision to take. It's a decission that will affect your next ten to fourteen years, so you better think twice before choose a dog.
It seems that you need a small, low energy dog. But I'm not sure the look of the dog will resonate with your personality.
There are a lot of dog selector quiz on the internet, they can help you choose the right dog for your personality and your lifestyle.
Here's one I liked: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/family/pets/dog-breed-quiz
When you decide what breed of dog suits you, maybe you will consider adopt a rescued dog from the breed you've choosen.
Good luck and I'll wait you under Dogs interest, to tell us what you've decided.

I love watching the dogs 101 episodes on TV. They have them available online. They do nice little videos about each breed, it's health concerns, proper environments along with basic grooming needs.
Not sure if it will help you make a final decision, but I think it oculd help narrow the search.

What's more important than the breed of the dog is the temperament of the dog. Even dogs of the same breed will vary greatly when it comes to temperament. One way to find a dog that is right for your situation is to contact a rescue organization with lots of available dogs in the program. (You can find rescue organizations in your area by searching Petfinder.com) Contact the head of the program and describe your situation- your lifestyle, the hours you work, what you're looking for in a dog, etc. They will hopefully try to match a dog in their program to what you're looking for!

I think your best bet is to get a smaller older dog, that is already trained and laid back. Since you have a small house, I would recomend a sheltie. They are small, easy to train, if it isn't already, and if you can find an older one, you'll be all set.
