Today when I think of my past , I wonder, how did we work without a delete button. Remember each mistake on typewriter was a nightmare...... No matter how carefully you typed, it was impossible to avoid a mistake.......and since there was no delete button we either had to use white ink, which was never perfect and make the document look so shabby, or we had to re-type again the whole document. I remember I had a boss who would always make new changes at the last moment and I had to retype the whole document again. Remember those black carbons that we used and went home with black hands and black face...lol....Thank God those days are no more......now we have delete button and also save, copy, paste, etc etc........which has made working so easy. Now when I see typewriter, I just smile at myself.

Hi aps!
You took as back to memory lane. Typewriters look a thing of past, part of history now. It looks unbelievable to me now that we used to work on pretty hard typewriters and used to blaken our hands with carbons. We had to be very attentive with our strokes so that we may not commit any silly mistake and to make carbon copies was real headache, at that time photo-copying machines were not so easily available in offices. I have worked on manual Typewriters and then switched to electronic typewriters and then to computers. Working on computers in offices is a great blessings and we can not thank enough the inventors of workable computers. And technology has undoubtedly made our office life easier.
Great Day!

Hello deepak, how are you
Yes I agree with you, Computer is a real blessing atleast for office work. Working on typewriter was really nightmares, no matter how careful I tried to be, still it was impossible to avoid mistakes on typewriter. I remember sometimes my ears use to become burning hot, due to repeated mistakes and work load and tension of finishing the work on time. Those were the times, when I did not feel hungry or thirsty due to work pressure. I also cried sometimes .......Thank God today things have changed.

Hello apsara!
I am doing fine. You are very right Computer is real blessing not only for office work but for home also. Had computer been not there, you and I would not have been talking here.
It still gives me jitters and nightmares to think how we used to work on manual typewriters. I did not use to cry, when I used to commit mistakes, but this used to make me more tense.

Good point hylke, you are right, If we are not careful and by mistake use the delete button at wrong time, we can be in great trouble. Wrong use of delete button can be of big loss if there is no undo button.....thanks for bringing my attention to this point.

I never used a typewriter at work...but started learning to type on a typewriter when I was in 9th std. But then we had to carry our portable typewriter to school. It wasn't the same as the big one I've seen. and later when I tried to type on the big one, it was hard for me. The one I learnt on was slightly different from a keyboard but not as inclined as the big one. And I didn't need to use carbon because all I did on my typewriter was make my own notes and mistakes there didn't matter. When I started working...computers had started coming into the picture and I just started typing with the keyboard...where the 'delete' button was there.

Hello i still have my Remigton mannual type writer in my room, so many sweet memories are associated with it, i typed my PhD THESIS myself with it in 1970, at that time there were no computers or electronic type writes, i had to erase using soft rubber, apply white fluid, retype,,,,
Thank you so much for this wonderful discussion, keep it up lol.
Professor. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.
God bless you. Welcome always.

yeah, there are a lot of new technology here to help us, and there are a lot of people that don't give the respect the technology deserve.
I am a translator, it means that I have to type a lot, now imagine if I am typing a text in a typewriter and at the end of it I do a mistake, the only thing we could do if we do not want to start all over again is to paint it of white and type again on it.
now we have all we need on our hands, the work is much faster now, and it is much easier because if we do a mistake the text processor will show it for you.

Yes Apsara you are right! Today if we look at the facilities we have with computers and printers, those days with manual type writers were real night mares!
Though I never had to work under any one , I had a portable Ramington type writer for typing my personal and official letters. I still recall the troubles I used to face with the type writer. I had to change the ribbon from time to time I had to clean the letters with a delicate brush to have a clean print. And yes since there were no delete buttons, I had to be very careful. In fact I had to be more careful as I never had a formal training in type writing.
Using the erasers ard whiteners to rectify the mistakes was too disturbing and unpleasant experiences.
Do you recall how one had to adjust the space required between two lines and after every line we needed to shift the cradle bar back to its original position? Making tables used to a big head ache for me on this type writer!
Now with the modern technology for me the computer and printer seems to be a great boon and I experience a big relief from that old laborious, boring and tedious job of typing on the maual type writers!

I still have this antique at home:) But we don't use it any more. Thanks for the computer and printer as it makes everybody finish the professional typing. It is true that there is no deletion for typewriter. So sometimes we have to use the correction pen which is not so good. Especially when you are typing a formal document.
I love China

I remember fondly my high school days. Typing class was a requirement. Making a mistake on a typewriter was just something that could not be taken back. you would have to start all over if you typed something incorrectly. it would be enough to put a damper on your good mood. thank goodness for computers and a way to delete your mistakes.

My elder brother had one on the first year he became a teacher and he had to carry it everywhere he goes haha! I always miss the sound it makes when someone is typing using it though it is one sound that I never hear again for few years now. I have tried using it too when I was working as a part time at one of our local clinic in my town after I finished high school, I did not hope that there would be a computer with me that time, but yes it was really annoying. Not to mention how painful my fingers were because I really had to press each button as hard as possible or otherwise the writing will not be clear and readable I'm glad the clinic bought a computer before all my fingers gone!
Have a nice day!

Yes I did that kind of job, where the boss dictates, and we type. Also I had learnt shorthand typing.....In India, still people are working on typewriter , also they are doing dictation tying and also steno typing.......India is a large country and still underdeveloped, so still many villages don't have computers yet.

LOL, I know what you;re saying. Whew, hard work using typewriters during those days. What you accomplish in an hour, you can accomplish it in just minutes these days. And what a noise that typewriters make! Anyway, they were a great help!

Although I'm still a teenager, I know what you mean. In one of my computer classes, my teacher had us try using a typewriter to copy down an entire page of notes without making any mistakes. I realized it wasn't easy when I couldn't find a backspace button anywhere. Technology's making life almost too easy, but I'm ok with it.

ha ha ha.......you all teenagers are lucky to be born in this new era. I wish I was born in this new generation. In another few years there will be so much more advanced technology and we old people will not ever remain alive to see all that........but never mind.......I think what we have seen till today is enough.....
