I need a new mattress/box springs. Went shopping today and was amazed at the cost of new mattresses and the changes. I last bought a mattress 15 years ago. First shocker, every single mattress in all 7 stores were white. Next, to blow my mind, mattress are no longer made to be flipped over, one side only. I'm used to turning my mattress every month. The COST, I saw sets as high a $6,000. We are talking queen size here. The memory foam mattresses were all over $2,000. You still have to buy a cover for the mattress because if the mattress get a stain it voids the warranty (?). I layed on one mattress that I want them to use in my coffin. It was so comfortable, I could imagine spending all eternity on that bed. Bottom line, I didn't buy anything. I had too many choices and am so confused. What kind of mattress do you guys have? Where did you buy them? How much is a good price for a set? What do you recommend?

I've been sleeping on a 6" thick, slab of furniture upholstering foam for about 20 years, and its as good today as it was when I bought it. Foam makes a Great mattress and its cheap. The mattress industry is a scam. The upholstering industry buys foam in large rolls for use in Sofas and Stuffed Chairs. I went into the factory, and asked for a double bed size piece of foam. They were only too happy to roll one out cut it to size and load it into my truck! I can't remember what I paid for this foam slab, but it was way below the price of the cheapest mattress.

What a wonderful and creative way to get a great bed. I wish I knew where to go. Think I would do just that also.

is that today there are plenty of varieties of mattresses for diferent needs, when previously did not exist and that put everything costs more expensive

I bought a sleep number bed a couple of years ago. (I had the one before that for 20+ years and remember paying around $500, so when I saw the price tags, I too fell over.) I think I paid around $2K for the mattress/springs. I'm more than satisfied with it. I can adjust the hardness, but found a number and have stuck with it. I didn't try the memory foam mattresses...I couldn't afford it, and even if I could have, I can't see spending that much money for a mattress! The mattress I got has dual controls, but since no one sleeps on the other side of my bed, it's never been tested.

I tried the sleep number beds. They are just so expensive. I will either have to wait a few months or go with something cheaper.

Have you ever heard of Furniture Row with several different stores? That's where I got my mattress. But it was ~$2k....! A lot of money for a mattress.

If you're susceptible to back pain, you should get a mattress with good support. My uncle complains about his tempurpedic because it doesn't force his back to be straight.

I can't remember how much mine cost, as we got it when we still lived at home, so my mum bought it. it was from Trago Mills. Westcountry people may know it. it's a discounty sort of big cheap shop that sells a bit of everything. some things are tat, and some things are utter bargains. my mattress is quite firm, as I've always liked quite a sturdy mattress, but, it has a good thick padded layer on top of the firmness. which means that it's soft and comfy, but firm and supportive at the same time. I will be very sad when this one eventually gives up the ghost, so I am looking after it as best I can. it's my favourite mattress I've ever had.

Your mattress sounds like heaven. That's what I'm looking for, a mattress that makes me want to jump in the bed. It's out there, and I'll find it.

I sure hope your price range is over $500. There is nothing out there for less than that and I didn't like any of the cheaper sets. Good luck with your search. Please let us know what you decide upon.

I need a new one, too, but just don't want to spend the money right now! My mom has a sleep number bed that she loves and she bought one for her room in my house for when she visits. I could sleep on that but I feel strange in that room, it's not mine! The bed is wonderful, I feel great when I get up in the morning! But, I still use my sad old bed with the saggy mattress... I don't like the pillowtop ones, they're too cushy and gushy. I plan to go to an outlet store when I'm ready so I don't pay any more than I have to. I'd get a sleep number bed but they're nothing but glorified air mattresses with HUGE pricetags!

I like the way your describe the sleep number beds. Funny you feel like a guest in your own house when you're in the guest bed. I suppose I would feel the same way. Nothing like the smell and feel of your own bed.

The all white thing still floors me, it just seems crazy! We bought ours last boxing day for half off and I'm really happy with it. It's a medium firm which I didn't think I'd like but really did. It's the 'bowling ball mattress', I don't remember what brand it is - Sealy maybe? It was half off so the mattress & box spring were $999. We got sucked into the fabric protection package and that came with a frame, two memory foam pillows (which I HATE), a cover and some special sealant spray that I never used. All in all I'm very happy with it and I'm so glad we bought it. The only real recommendation I have is to never pay full price, places like The Brick have half off deals all the time. Watch the flyers and wait till you see one!

Great advice. I would never pay full price because full price is just totally out of my price range. I've never heard of the Brick stores, but will watch like a hawk to find a store here with a great brand and a big sale.
