OMG, someone I know was shot!!

I used to work for the Quebec L*quor Board before I hurt my back and had to find something to do from home. I was watching the news just now and they said that there was a robbery in one of the QLB store. A woman was alone in the store, the 2 robbers in their early 20's shot her. She's now quadriplegic!!! They dont understand why she was all alone in the store. Well Ive worked nearly all the time alone in a store, for 18 yrs. We were only 2 people, so when one was out for lunch for a period of 1.5 hrs, the other person was all alone. Thursday and Friday evenings I was all alone for 3 hrs. It was the same when I worked on Sundays. They didnt want to pay for another employee and I was alone. Im pretty sure that more than once I could have been in deep trouble, attacked or killed but I guess I had an angel looking over me as Id always get a sense that something wasnt right when I saw some kids outside the store and Id lock the doors then until they were gone. My manager was a jerk and he didnt want me to do this but I didnt care, I had my Union behind me telling me that I shouldnt have been alone in the store to begin with. Now this poor woman I know will be invalid for the rest of her life because she listened to her manager (probably another jerk)!! Im so happy I dont have to work there anymore. I was always afraid of being attacked or injured or killed. Why is it that us women are always ending up being hurt no matter what??

Hello! I think you are really very lucky for quiting that job and find something else! That person who got shot could have been you! To the question why women are always ending up being hurt, i'm afraid i dont have a question because i dont think it is true..we complain a lot, this i know, but i think that men have their share of unhappines too

Hello!! Some say that us women are being attacked because we're not as strong physically as men. That could be true. Men know we're not as strong. I feel SO lucky to not work there anymore, I was always afraid they'd be a robbery. There was one at the store I used to work at but it happened while I was out to lunch. Again I think I had an angel looking over me!! Thank you!!

guys see us weak. they know they are capable of hurting us because we are only woman. they take advantage of us which really sad thats why those stores need guys to protect their store at night. why dont they put guards so it will be safer for the staff and the store earning will be safe too.

Most women are physically weak and people take advantage of this fact. They usually would look for women walking alone on an alley or a dark street and attack them, thinking they're physically strong. What happened to that woman in the store is really horrible, but i think it was her destiny, if you believe in destiny. You were lucky though!

Oh I know that being a woman means you always have to be careful all the time, we're brought up that way!! Yes I do believe in destiny but it doesnt make it less horrible what happened to her. Being shot in the head for nothing really as they didnt even take anything apparently. She was shot in the back of the head.....how coward is that!! She never had a chance. Since she was all alone in the store, she just lay there until another customer came into the store and found her, then called 911. They're lucky Im not working there anymore as Id wreck havoc with the Union!! Thanks for your reply!!

Wow! I am so sorry! When I was manager of a small retail store I had a rule that no one was to be left alone in the store EVER. It was also the rules of the general manager. It is simply not a safe thing for anyone, especially for women, because we are seen as an easy target for crimes. Its a shame that the case of money comes in between the cause of safety, which should never be the case! Again, my condolences to you I am terribly sorry!

Thank you Tragicbeauty!! You did well to not let anyone work alone in the store when you were the general manager, they were lucky employees!! The managers at the QLB stores shouldnt leave employees alone but they do because they dont have to pay a partimer to come in for the lunch break then. The more money they save, the bigger their bonuses!!! So the life and safety of an employee means nothing when it comes to money!! Thanks for replying !!!!!

I am sure that was a shocker for you to learn by seeing the news. There are certain businesses that seem very vulnerable, for both men and women, and they are places that people should not have to work alone. L*quor stores, hotel desk clerks, convenience stores. It makes them so vulnerable, and they can be injured so easily.

That's very scary!!! Hopefully things will change after this incident. Or sadly, maybe it will take several more incidences like this before there's a change. That is very sad for the woman you know, and I only hope that her life-changing injury wont' be for nothing and will hopefully change workplace conditions in the future!

I doubt there will be any changes. Things like this have happened before and they did nothing to protect the employees. BUT, nobody can get into the headoffice though.....you need a special card!!!! Im really happy Im not working there anymore! Thanks!

Hi, MagicalBubbles! I'm sorry to hear the bad news. Poor woman, hope she could be better in the future. It seems that it's very dangerous to keep shop alone. The local government should be more responsible for the security.

Thank you Qianyun!! Yes they should be more responsible. I cant understand why the Union isnt doing anything about this. She'll remain a quadriplegic for the rest of her life Im afraid.....she was shot in the head!! Thanks!!
