Why cats are harder to train than dogs? Cats are smarter than dogs and that is what I read some on the internet. They are both have different personality and character, but cats are harder to train than dogs. Like what I have read, they want to make movie about a cat-- that is "Thomasina"-- old "Thomasina" movie-- the trainer said that it is hard to train a cat than a dog... hmmm... so, do you think that this is the reason why those people prefer to train a dog for a dog movie than to produce a cat movie?

Cats are more of an independent type of pet. They are able to jump high walls and fences and go anywhere they like and only return to you when they are hungry and need food.
Dogs are more faithful and obedient to its owners. Remember the movie Hachiko? There is one statement from the movie Ratatouille which goes something like this "Cats look down on you (consider themselves as your masters). Dogs look up to you (consider you as their masters) and mice consider you as their peers."
So that's probably the reason why cats are harder to train than dogs.

Both my cat and dog come when I call. Neither travels away from home. They will go out to do their business and return to the house, although on really nice days, they may lay out on the deck to sun a bit.

Wow.
I want to born during the time where female cat was used to be praised as a God. It's my first time that I heard about a female God and it makes me feel secure not like our God that we all worshiped and praised was said to be a male--- some say God is a male and that is why bible teaches us that women are less than men. That is what I know and that is what I learn from it.

that is the best answer that I read sup3rdud3, That is what I also think. Cats appraise themselves highly. maybe because in the earlier period in our history cats are treated like members of the royal family, and cats were once worshiped as God, a female cat to be exact.

I do think cats are smarter than dogs.
But cats are also less interested in pleasing us, they only please themselves.
However, if what they do to please themselves is then rewarded, they can learn tricks.
In fact, most movies about cats have a whole host of cats playing the one part, because cats are often 1 or 2 trick "ponies".
So, you might have one cat that walks across a bar, and another cat who will jump up and turn on a light, and another cat who will do another trick, so they often have to have up to 6 cats doing one series for a shot. Hence, you have to have 6 cats that look enough alike to play the role...
Have you ever seen "That Darn Cat"?

He he he he he. I watched "That Darn Cat" last night on youtube.com. It's great to see them and it's nice to see a cat movie again besides Thomasina.

A cat is very independent and likes to do as he or she pleases. Like a cat would like to learn to do what his or her owner says. A dog can understand words. I know my two dogs know 'sit', 'stay' 'walk' and 'dinner'. I wouldn't be able to says lets go to Sand Bay. They know the lovely sandy beach and the fun they will have. Dogs go out with their owner on walks. Cats like to go out on their own. It is easier to train a dog to have on television. It will be hard to make the cat movie. On a program I watched as a child the dogs sat and then the cats were off. They wouldn't do as the presenters wanted a lot of the time it seemed.

Somehow cats are harder to train but still you can train them just a little bit more patient is needed. From what I have read, before the cats are considered highly appraise pet in the palace where people are punished if they hurt or killed a cat. Cats and dogs have their own different character. Cats are solitary but too demanding. They are so independent but when you show your affection to them, you'll be surprise that they are very loving too. No training is required just to make them follow you.

I don't know introvert shy. well, dogs are more attention seekers than cats. cats btw who just don't care what you think, as long as there is food, they are on the go.

Yes, I think it is hard to train cat as compare to dog, as you said cats are smarter than dogs but it is not easy to train cats easily. One of a interview, I was reading from a dog trainer, she was I think very right about cats, she said when you are training a dog, you must be a leader. We generally dont enforce any sort of leadership in case of cats. If a cat rub her face on you this does not mean affection, but dominance. Cats have there scent glands on their face and they are marking their territory when rubbing her face on you. Our cats are convinced that we belong to them. If we change the dynamic of our relationship and practice leadership with cats then they would be more receptive to our request.

They aren't. If you start training them from the time they are kittens, they are very easy to train. My Lucky went from feral to domestic, and that was all because my mother and I trained him how to be domestic.

We had cats and dogs before and they all stay in the house so I get to noticed both usual attitudes but well, I don’t know if our animals had their own characters compared to others. But anyway, cat wants what they want. If you call them to come near you, they jump somewhere and walk away. They play rough. Unlike dogs, you can treat them as if they know what we’re talking about. They look at you and wait what we want them to do.

I have found little difference in training my dog and cat. Both have excellent manners. Neither jumps up on guests. Although they enjoy playing, they know when it is time to play and when it is time to nap or watch what's going on outside. I play hide and see with the Gentleman Tom Cat and toss a ball for Mr. Scotty. Sometimes, I put a toy on a long string and run around the house with both of them chasing the toy.
There is a routine in our house and both animals caught onto it quickly and follow it perfectly.
When I write my stories, G. Tom Cat settles on the CPU unit and Mr. Scotty lays down beside my chair. When I go somewhere, both of them follow and then we all return to our previous seats.
G. Tom Cat is not a loud fellow; he meows very quietly and Mr. Scotty only barks when someone comes to the door. A simple 'quiet' and he stops. At meal times, G. Tom Cat does not watch anyone eat; occasionally Mr. Scotty will attempt it, but a clearing of my throat sends him to another section of the room. When he gets a bit over exhuberant sniffing a newcomer, a command of 'manners' stops the behavior and he moves away from the guest.
So, I really haven't seen a difference of attitude or willingness to learn from either of them.

cats are actually smart.they are quite stubborn though.I think it is in their nature to think for themselves.they are independent.they rarely follow orders and prefer to 'boss' around.

basically cats are solitary creature and much more anti-social than dogs. They act on their own and do not demands much so I think they prefer to be on their own and just won't accept commands from their slave master. But cats are wiser and smarter because they can tend to themselves and live as gracious as can be with or with out a slave master.

My cat plays fetch with me, and another one of my cats plays catch. If you throw a soft ball for him he will jump up and pin it between his paws.
I think there are a few reasons. One, dogs are pack animals. In nature they have a master, so they expect a master. Humans fill that role. Cats are not pack animals with a social order, and are not expecting to have a master.
Two, since people expect that you cannot train a cat, they don't try. We have four cats, and if they ever jump anywhere they are not supposed to (table, counter,) we say NO and snap our fingers, and they jump right down. If you take the time that you would take to train a dog, cats are quite trainable. All of ours come when we call, and my special cat will jump up onto my shoulder and lick my nose when I come home.

I think it is because cats like to sleep and wants to be alone or be independent. I think cats still have the royal blood of Cleopatra's cat in which the cat can do anything and she is treated like a royalty.
And based from my experience with my cat, cats are not that eager to please you. They will just rub their body on your legs and will walk away and sleep some more.

Dogs are too much emotional.what their owner says and how much attention he/she gives to the dog really does matter to dog.Cat isnt like that.
Cats are independent and they want to behave as they want and not what their owner wants them to do.Cats can stay happy even if it getting food and water on time. They are happy.Attention, love, care is additional bonus. They dont need it.

Well, people say that cats are smart, but I often think that they're just really lazy animals. I still can't recall anything that will make cats look like really smart animals, as all they do is eat, sleep, or try to attack their owners.
Maybe it's easier to train dogs as they're more receptive, and are quick at learning. Meanwhile, cats are just like lazy humans, if they're not interested, they won't pay attention.
