Yes, based on the book and the old movie, to answer your first question. It opened in 1988 at the Stanford production and then was cruxified by critics and audiences, and then transported to Broadway (you would think they would try to improve it for Broadway) were it was justly recruxified again. It's so notorious that a a book "Not Since Carrie" was dedicated to the horrorific production.
Mercy on the cast, they did a great job. It's the director and choreography. Debbie Allen, who worked on Fame and Footloose, obviously had no regard to the book and movie and the fact that it is supposed to be in the horror genre. It's as if she threw in any high-school esque dancing whenever she had the chance.
But the lead for Carrie, Linzi Hataley, was wonderful at Stanford and Broadway. And the portrayers of Margeret White were phenominal, Barabara Cook portrayed Mrs. White at Stanford and Betty Buckley (the coach from the original movie) stepped in as Mrs. White at Broadway. The scenes between Carrie and her mother are the only genuninely chilling moments on the stage.
I really recommend watching the old clips of the musical for laughs and her moments of brillance.
It excuses nothing, but Stephen King himself stated to have liked and appreciated the musical.
But when they ressurect this, I hope they edit it good. The workshop readings for the revival to Off-Broadway can be found on Youtube.
