Homemade or restaurant meals - what is cheaper?

This is not about the quality and the taste of the food. Nowadays, when most people are gripped by the crisis, "cheaper" is the word of the day. It seems obvious that if you buy products at the right prices you can prepare cheaper meals at home. But we often forget to calculate things like the price of the electricity. And there are restaurants where the food is not expensive at all. So what do we have to choose if we want to cut the spendings for food?

I beleive even with electricity calculated in homemade is cheaper than eating out. There is a benefit to homemade food too.You know it is cooked by you so if you are a good cook then you know it wont be burnt. And you can also fix it anyway you would like.

i do agree that restaurant food is cheaper than homemade meals but this is just right for single person not a family.when i was in college i did not cook for myself as i can use just a few dollars a day to buy but when i was at home, i would prefer the homemade food made by myself or my mom.i would say it is much cheaper than bring the whole family or take away food for them.we have more than 5 people.do you think it is a way to have less price for us when eating out??yes there is, but we need to share the food.

Definitely, homemade meals are way cheaper compared to fastfood/restaurant meals. restaurant meals are overpriced! unlike homemade, you can buy fresh ingredients at discount stores or wet markets. i used to order from fastfood chains before but when i moved out from my parents house and lived in with my hubby, i have learned how to be practical in so many ways. cooking homemade meals helped me to save a lot of money.

Hi, Gracie04, thanks for your comment. I've ordered food at home just a few times, I don't like the taste of the fastfood meals and thea are really overpriced. But when I buy products it's not a lot more cheaper here. The prices of the most basic food are rising, it's almost scary.

i think homemade is cheaper in our country . and we could buy vegetables and fruit or some other meat from supermarket, then we cook it ourselves. and it will be so good for our families. and happy to us. but the restaurant must be higher price. because they must get some payment for what they do . good luck.

Homemade food is cheaper. Since when i cook I also include not just the meals my family will eat but also what I am going to take with me to the office as my lunch food. Some foods in cans like the Spanish style Sardines which serves as a dish to accompany either rice or bread and is much cheaper than buying a half kilo of fish. It can be cooked easily as well in the microwave oven or in the stove.

Thanks for your post, Starrose_ara. It's interesting for me to learn that the foods in cans are cheaper. Here it's fust the opposite. I like the sardines in cans but I buy them from time to time. And the prices of the fish are rising - even at the outdoor markets. Have a nice day.

When cooking food at home, I always like to cook something good for my family. Therefore, the price always goes higher.
On the weekday, I eat at the restaurants in my school. Though not as tasty as foods made by myself, it costs me less and saves me a lot of time because you don't have to prepare for the meals.
So, if I want to cut the spending for the food, I would rather eat every day at the campus. But, I couldn't stand eating there every day. I want to cook for myself at weekends.

Yes, Banban, it's good to have a place like this to eat cheaper food. I have a canteen at my work and their food is not tasty at all but at least it is cheap. And when I buy products to make a good meal sometimes it turns out that the whole thing costs a lot, especially the condiments.

i think homemade normally is acheaper than meals in restaurant..you can also calculate that homemad food you can control what kind o food are you cooking on the contrary in restaurant meals or fast food ones, pire, normally if food is really cheaper there is an high probability that the food is awful as quality.

I think it depends on the restaurant. In the area where I live most of the restaurants are relatively expensive, and in many cases it is more expensive to eat at a restaurant, but there are a couple of places that are quite cheap for instanse some of the Chinese restaurants. My husband and I sometimes talk about that when we visit one of those places. If we had to buy all the ingredients ourselves and pay for electricity we would probably spend more money than we do at the restaurant.

If you're talking about pure cost then i'd say get a food from a resto. Although you'd be paying it in the long run cuz more often than not, these restos' food quality isn't good compared to home-made. I'd rather cook at home than eat at a cheap restaurant.

I prefer homemade food because I like to cook my own food.
I use steamboat to cook my meats and vegetables for obtaining more vitamin.
At the same time, the heat of steamboat can produce warming temperature to my living room so as I can save electricity bill for my heater.

I like to eat out once in a while, eating at home however, is much more cheaper and healthier, at home you are able to control the cost, for example: a spaghetti and meatballs meal for one person, may run about $8 in a restaurant, with that same $8 you may be able to cook an entire meal for 2 or more persons.

Homemade meals.
Restaurants is a lot more expensive than eating in, especially if you know what your doing then homemade meals can be very effective. Within restaurants wages, profit and none of this comes into home cooking. It's nice to have a treat but it's also nice to make your meals. I love making home made pizza!

Most people can cook at home cheaper than it would cost them to go out to eat. However, most of the time, people are too lazy to try to cook for themselves, so they spend more money than they need to spend by going out to eat instead of cooking at home...

I know how it is to be busy. I used to think that cooking took too long as well. However, I am learning that it only takes a few minutes to cook up something at home. It is also usually a lot healthier to cook at home for yourself. It is just all a matter of what you cook and how you season it. The more I learn to cook, the more I want to cook. It is a good way to be creative...

Always Homemade meals is cheaper. Even homemade foods are healthy. But the restaurant meals are not healthy. It will spoil our stomach soon. Also the homemade foods will be clean. But think of the restaurant food. In most of the restaurant they will not clean the plates properly. It also will lead to dangerous diseases. The only drawback in homemade food is "we itself have to cook".This is the major drawback.

Hi you go into a restaurant and pay say,£5 for a meal which could be fish and chips and a slice of bread. Well you could buy a pack of 4 fish fillets(iceland ) for £3, a bag of potatoes for 75p and a loaf of bread for 75p-£1. Now you could feed four people for the same money it would have cost for just you to have that meal in a restaurant, and the amount of electric/gas would be nominal.
I think it is much cheaper to buy and cook at home.Occassionally as a special treat its great to go out for a meal though, let someone else take on the cooking and washing up..
Have a great weekend.

If we aren't taking quality into consideration as you stated, then I would say eating out is cheaper. You can go to Mcdonalds and get a cheeseburger and fries for under three dollars. At home you'd have to pay for the meat, the bread, the cheese, the fries, the drink, etc.
BUT another good point is, if you eat that sort of food EVERY night, would you pay more in doctors bills later on in life? Nobody can be healthy eating that food everyday! Makes ya wonder..
