What does it mean to add to the bible?

So I was recently in a my lot conversation where I proposed that God could send someone to set the Christian world straight on some controversial teachings... and God could kinda teach us like He seemed to teach some of the people during bible times - ya know - like Moses. Someone commented that it would be okay for one to speak what they believe to be true, and that is okay as long as it is not adding to the bible. But I thought my question would be a good one to post to everybody: what does it really mean - to add to the bible? How would one add to the bible?

I think it means adding rules and regulations-human precepts, specific dates and times regarding events, as some have done...things like that. There are unfortunately, a lot of controversial teachings. There are many good books and writings by various authors that are shared among Christians; because they help us to understand from different vantage points or see things in ways we may not have before. But, as far as the "Christian" world goes, the Bible is the only authoritative word over our lives. It is pretty cut and dry and easy to understand too. God bless!

Huh... gave me a fair share of things to think about... so it is adding to the Bible if there are teachings that aren't in the bible being taught as truth - like authoritative. But it is okay as long as people just speculate and offer their own opinions? But couldn't God, Himself, talk to someone and have them teach something authoritative - like on par with the bible? I think there could be a great benefit to the many varieties of Christianity if God were to take that step. I'm just a believer in one truth and would sure hope/expect that maybe God would lay down some authoritative clarification. You know - hehe - I'm having a hard time thinking of something that is important enough to say but unimportant enough to not make clear. I don't know, maybe I have way too many questions I'd like input on than is helpful in this MyLot format... :)

As a non-denominational Bible-Believing Christian, I recognize the Apocrypha, are added books into the Bible, that should not be there. For example the Book of Enoch. In this case, adding to the Bible, is taking some text that is questionable, or unverifiable, and claiming it to be part of the Bible. Another way to add to the Bible, is to read into the text, meanings that are not there. Typically this is done, in the exact same way political speech is messed with. Normally by ignoring the context. Or perhaps by assuming a metaphor, where none was intended.

It is like the one user said that adding to the bible just means simply tht poeple are putting things in the bible that weren't there in the first place. That is just as bad as taking away from the bible, and that is basically, not accepting the whoe bible as the Word of God because they don't accept parts of it. If you don't accept parts of it, then you really aren't accepting any of the bible. I have talked to some that feel that the Old Testament is not valid for christians today, and I have told them that if they don't accept the Old Testament then they might as well throw their bible out as it is just as important as the New Testament. Adding to it would be adding their own beliefs that aren't there, and saying that it exists in the bible. I know it is hard to understand the bible, but if wse ask the Holy Spirit to help us to understand it, He will.

I think you mean adding to the bible something, which is not already there. I think theologians of every sect has already done that. That is the reason we have so many versions of the bible. One thing none can change in the bible is its theme. One who knows the theme, to him it will not make any difference even if there is something added or deleted from it.
