Every morning, I wake up to annoying campaign jingles being bombarded full blast all around our village. This is at 8 in the morning. I swear, I don't even have to set my alarm anymore because I wake up to the same old re-hashed tune. My question is this... do you think these campaign jingles are effective? My personal opinion? I don't think so. Well sure, keep on playing the same tune over and over again, that would definitely cause a widespread case of LSS (Last Song Syndrome or earworm). But that doesn't mean I'll hum that tune all the way to the precincts and vote for that person. In my case, I make sure NOT to vote for them. Heck, if they can't "keep the peace" now, what more when they're in office? And don't get me started on illegal campaign posters. Your thoughts people?

It sure didn't work for Villar. It works for recall purposes. I think its more effective for positions that you can choose to vote for many candidates like senator or councilor. Some voters would just write down the name most familiar to them if there are still blanks in their ballots.

...as I posted the reply above, a campaign caravan just passed by playing a re-hashed Beiber tune. I'm pretty sure the candidate didn't pay for that tune. hahaha. I mean why go through all the hassles of acquiring an international hit just for a campaign jingle --- for a local government position at that. :p ...so it's loud and annoying ...and probably illegally acquired. 2 cons right there if you ask me. :p

Well they are effective in a way that you can remember the name of the politician. But I really don't judge the politician worthy enough just by jingle alone.

Yes, we shouldn't base our votes on who has the coolest or wackiest jingle. :) But they do serve their purpose if used correctly. For me the jingles that stick the most are the ones that were those which were composed specifically for a candidate. If it has a really cool hook, it'll really help voters remember the candidates.

i guess jingles are effective if you're competing against many candidates. in my district, i think there are a total of 700 candidates for the bgy councilor level and only 70 will be elected into office. i don't know any of them so the jingles will probably help in the name recall (the same way jingles in commercials for products do.)Of those whose names I remember, I try to know more of. Personally, i like hearing jingles (yes, even loud ones) because they set the election time mood. Never mind if they don't have rights for these songs. I saw a TV segment before saying that going after these candidates for illegal use of songs is next to impossible and petty especially in the bgy level. What I don't like are the tarps and posters with big faces of candidates with just the words "Vote! Juan dela Cruz" and the tons of trash from these campaign materials after the election.

You bring up valid points. :) Indeed, if there are just way too much candidates it would be hard to remember all their names and what position they're funning for --- jingles would probably help in this regard. :) The fact that most artists and composers are never compensated properly for the use of their songs really saddens me. :( I'm a musician myself so I know how hard the life of an artist is. It's not easy making a hit song. It takes a huge amount of blood, sweat, tears, and of course money to produce a single hit.

Personally no. I think it's just an addition to noise pollution plus disruption to my sleep. ^.^ People today are wise, They may experience the phenomenon of LSS but they would vote differently. I think people has learned their lessons well. (hopefullY) and who in the right mind would vote for a candidate just because their campaign jingles are catchy?

I think campaign jingles are effective in the sense that give the candidate a recall factor and they make one notice a candidate specially when the jingle is really very catchy. But if you are a wise voter who knows that it all boils down to qualifications and platform, then these jingles are rather useless and not a good basis for choosing a candidate. And you are right, these candidates choose songs that are very irritating...it doesn't help at all.

Yes, I believe their main use is for recall. But it's often times not very effective because they use sub par speakers... it sounds too muffled. You can't understand a thing. You'll definitely recognize the tune... but that's not the whole point of the jingles. :)

For me, I don't think so. Jingle is just a way to promote that candidate in a lively way. But still, for me, the characteristic of being a good leader, fame/popularity, and experience are still the basis of voters. No matter how creative is your jingle, if you're not well-known by people, then you'll just be nothing.

Very true. So is it safe to say that for a campaign to work, the candidate must be already well known to begin with? :)

In England they have a really annoying one on the telly at the moment for a website that compares car insurance. It's an opera singer singing the name of the site over and over again and that you'll save money if you go to the site. I don't have a car so I've no need to go to the site, but if I did I wouldn't use this site unless they agreed to change the jingle, it really is terrible. I just did a quick search of youtube to see if I could find it for you and it seems I'm not alone in hating it, there's loads of videos of the guy from the advert getting terminated in all sorts of ways This has to be the most annoying one (this is the actual advert, if you look though there's all the funny videos of him getting is just deserts) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vL9WLeUi5tc

campaign jingles are effective in sense that it helps in the name recall. Not all voters know their candidate personally and with the constant bombardment of these campaign jingles voters would at least be familiarize with the candidates name. One of the ways to easily remember a candidates name is through jingle and the fact that we've been hearing campaign jingles every time there's an election means that it has positive results.

For some, its effective... haha! but for me its annoying. *peace* its just my opinion.

Well, talk about annoying. Isn't that illegal? I've heard that if it's a private village, then the home owners should contact the village or subdivision administration. The home owners have full privacy rights. I haven't experienced that one before (especially in our village) though I've experienced that one when I was in our car when we were going to the mall. I swear the speaker must have been in full-volume because we could hear it REALLY inside our car as if the sound is coming from our car's speakers. Nope -- I believe those jingles never work out. :| Other than that, good luck. Barangay elections on Monday is near anyway. May your suffering end soon. Cheers!

I hear you. Besides it being a disturbance of peace (and sleep), as I've pointed on my post above, I assume the candidates never legally acquired the songs for their campaign purposes. Of course I may be wrong.

Jingles during the election here in the Philippines are quite effective. Because if it isn't working on the people then why it is being used until now? I guess these jingles has been around here even before i was born.
