Nowadays many people are working from home as freelancers or even as full time employees. Depending on the nature of work, it may not be always necessary to go to office and the work can be done from home as well. With increase in outsourced jobs, more and more people are opting to work as freelancers. As technologies like video conferencing become easily accessible and the internet increases in popularity, working from home can be very convenient for certain people. Moreover, it saves the time and effort of commuting to work place and back. For all these reasons it seems to me that working from home might be more popular in the future and it can have a big impact on our lifestyle. Let me know what you think.

Depends on what you mean by 'work from home'.
There are two kinds of 'work from home' in my opinion.
The first type sounds like what you are describing, which we in America call "TeleCommuting".
The term is slightly out dated. It used to mean that instead of commuting to work, you worked at home and called in on the telephone. Telecommute. Now we have the internet and computers.
This type of work from home, will never become the main stream. Only a few types of work can be done completely at home, and sent in through the internet. Further, most companies want development products to be kept inside the company walls, because of fear information could be leaked out.
For example, Apple Computer and I think Microsoft both, when they are working on a new version of their operating systems Windows or Mac OS X, will actually keep their developers on the company grounds for months without letting them go home. They are not even allowed to go home, let alone TeleCommute.
Further, many times the workers do not have the resources to work from home. High cost programs, equipment and machinery, and so on. So many can't work from home even if they wish.
Now there is another type of work from home. This is where you simply start your own business. That's been the big trend here. I know a girl who is early 30s, and has a business doing web sites for companies near where she lives. She makes really good money, and does it all from home.
I know a guy near here that makes artwork on cups and bikes and such. He earns a nice income from selling his art work, all from home.
There's a lady across the street, and she earns a ton of money, baby sitting kids. Every morning 6:30 am, she has her doors open, and people drop off kid after kid, and she makes tons of money.
So that type of 'work from home' is really taking off. The other, not-so-much.

Yes I agree with you that there are lots of work that do not need computers, instead just human resources. These won't change, but there are still many people who use computers and they have to go to office. In the future they might be able to work from home more frequently, if the current trend continues. The disadvantage, as you mentioned, is that people might get more lazy, but if they have more spare time. they can always make up for that.

Hmmmm... Lazy? I think, it is not "lazy" for me. I think, for me, "lazy" is a bad term for those people who works at home. They just still "work" but a less effort. They still do the hard work even if they are working at home. That is all.

I know a lot of people that work at home. They almost always started working at the companies office and then made arrangements to work at home at times. I would love a job like that, having a choice of going to the office or working at home.
I only work at home doing extras like mylotting and that isn't a full time job. I also do surveys but that also wouldn't pay the bills. I work cleaning houses, self employed, and I couldn't work at home doing that so I just have to satisify myself that it won't ever happen for me.
Cheers and happy mylotting,
Chris

I began working from home back in 1981. I lived near Johns Hopkins University and did typing for college students and, occasionally, a professor or two. In 1988, I started working from home as a typesetter and proofreader. I did this for a little more than 20 years and LOVED it!!!
I could more-or-less pick my own hours and could work at 3 a.m. if I felt like it. I did have deadlines but always managed to get the work done before the deadline. The pay was terrific, much better than when I worked in an office. Of course, the benefits weren't there, like paid vacation, sick days, paid holidays, etc. and no health insurance but I made enough money to get my own health coverage.
BUT, it began to fizzle out around 1995 or so because the companies I worked with began sending the work I was doing overseas, where it was cheaper for them. One-by-one, every company was outsourcing, usually to India or Mexico.
That made me very sad because I had to go back to working in an office. I did some work from home (as an independent contractor) for an online company, doing legal transcription. I did this for a few years before my disability (fibromyalgia) made it impossible to sit for long periods of time and just type.
I think that more and more companies are realizing that they can get better performance out of people who are allowed to work from home. They don't have the stress that working in an office brings, like rush hour traffic, babysitter issues, picking kids up from school, being home with sick kids, etc.
I just hope that most of these companies don't start outsourcing to other countries! It's bad enough that there are so many Mexicans in this country already taking jobs from Americans, with quite a few of them working illegally. I know this from doing the legal transcription which was mainly workers' comp cases. It's unbelievable that Mexicans can get a job in this country using someone else's SS number after entering this country illegally and have the gall to apply for Workers' Comp when they're injured on the job. The worst thing about it is that sometimes they actually GET Workers' Comp! They should be deported right back to Mexico. I'm sympathetic to their problem but we have a serious problem of our own right here called unemployment. My son looked for a job, any job, for almost two years before he found one.
Sorry about the rant, that's a touchy subject with me.
Back on subject, I hope that more and more companies will see the benefits of hiring people to work from home or at least subcontract with them to work from their homes. It really would benefit everyone.

That's depressing, I have been job hunting for one year and it's already getting to me. I went to school to be a medical biller and coder and I can't even find a job doing that! I can't even get a job at McDonalds!

Welcome to mylot
Yes i agree with you, there is shortage of jobs, secondly all can't go out to work due to this reason or other, so on line work, working from home becomes the only left option to accept lol.
Thanks for sharing
Best of luck.

The more popular it becomes the lesser opportunities there will be. For sometime internet is being bombarded with super-influx of information and there are so many contradictory jargons that one has to wrestle with this info and many a times people get burnt. So earn your way while you can. However, as the need keeps rising there could come a fresh batch of newer categories in earning money online and they could sustain the industry for longer period of time, too.

i think is a possibility!!in reality considering technologies that will allow to work from home i think that in future even many factories can choose this type of work even because they can save for certain costs on work but not on productivity!!I think in many cases we are far from this opportunity in the majority of jobs..but it cna be a possibility for the future!!

I think that it will be something more popular as time goes on. My sister has a job where she can split her time between home and office; I know that opportunity was not available a few years ago! Thanks to the Internet and the technology we have nowadays it is easier to work at home which is great for enable mothers to return to the workforce or dads who choose to be the children caretakers. It’s about flexibility and it’s about time employers recognise how important it is to have a good balance between work and home.

Maybe this is the future generations of working. Since online earnings are growing and growing daily.
But most people today think that earning online is a kind of joke. They are not believe that there are people making money online. That is why when invited or tell them to join and earn extra cash they laugh and or saying that your talking nonsense thing...

I don't think so. I think its popularity is mostly gone now. Already had it. It is discovered that just working from home alone is not enough to save the companys money so now a lot of jobs are outsourced. It's best to just do your best and work at home it you can, but don't expect it. If you truly want to work from home you will have to start your own business.

Yes, especially in a big city like Jakarta. The traffic is getting worse, people are trapped in traffic jam every day and it makes us feel stressful. I also have part time job from home ( writing and will be-translating) and I am also going to focus on phone interpreting and teaching Indonesian online. I prefer being part timer, I don`t go outside too often. I used to be like that while still teaching for corporate. I left in the morning, and got back home at 3pm, and not everyday. I want to be in that life again.

I see your point, and I also think that those kind of works may become more common in the near future, internet may become cheaper and more accesible and all that can be done though it will have a rise on home works.
But, I see another side of the coin too. What you're saying can be applied only to a very limited number of activities, and only those that are highly office oriented whose results can be transfered over internet and don't require team cooperation.
Many works are outside that range. For instance, take the building companies, transports, retailing outlets, supermarkets, education, medicine. They by no means can be done from home. And even those that theorically can be done, the companies must be willing to allow this, for there are many things that can get out of their control.

I wonder whether in the future it might be the only way of working! Those who live in big cities are finding that they have to spend a long time just going to work every morning and then returning home in the afternoon and working from home might be a way to solve that problem.

Yes, especial with the price of gas. It sometimes isn't worth the cost to get to a job outside of the house. Companies also save money, by not having a building to maintain.

hi msandip if working from home actually pays yes more peple will
do it but a lot of the stuff nowdays is scam and you end up paying
a large sum of money for phoney books that tell you to see this
same scam to other people so it keeps the scam alive. for the most part there are not that many legitimate websites for women to work at home, and further more off line jobs are stil the better paying jobs.a lot of people on the other hand do telecommute to their jobs from home with a lot of benefits f or both employee and employer.l

Yes I think it already has become more popular and will get even more so. Just look at the number of people and organizations that are now signed up with Facebook, Twitter, etc. People are realizing that having an online presence is the way to go. Employers are understanding this too and in trying to cut back on expenses they are finding it more economical to allow employees to work from home.

From both a business sense and a personal sense, I really think that it is. Businesses would embrace the fact that they can save money on having an actual physical building because there will be less office space that is needed. Businesses really are something that are looking to save every cent out there. It is just the natural evolution of business in many ways, to go to a lot more people working at home.
As for people, having to deal without the traffic and also the bad weather, that is a great thing. Plus technology has made it possible for people to meet all over the world from the comfort of their own homes. So it is just going to extend int more areas. Working from home is going to be more and more popular and just something that many people will find themselves doing in the not so distant future. That is where I think the wind is blowing.

I think it will be really popular because its will easier to do your task and you will have much time with your love one if you capable manage your time.
You can see this day how many people own a blog and many of them used it to sell something, like here in Asia a site called Multiply really popular among stay at home mom and they sell something there.
