Would having a treadmill really make a difference?

Treadmill in the house - Exercise in the house

I’ve been wanting to take up jogging and running again. But I keep coming up with lame excuses why I couldn’t and why I shouldn’t. I keep thinking, if only I had a treadmill, it would be much easier. I could put it in the garage and I could run anytime, even if the weather is not that good. Or would I? Would you agree? Do you already have a treadmill? And are you using it as much as you could? Or do you just use it to hang clothes?

I wouldn't go out of my way to buy one. They cost a lot and take a lot of space. And, yes they do end up holding your clothes. Haha. However, I do suggest looking in people's trash (or apartment dumpster bins) a couple of months into the year. Many people by a treadmill with good intentions for their new year's resolution and end up dumping them because it was pointless. Also I have found an old school treadmill in the trash because the previous owner was good about using them but wanted to update to a nicer model. Score! Also keep up with freecycle.com or craigslist.org free pages and you might snag one there. Bottom line, get a freebie for a trial run (lol, I made a pun!) and if it works you can feel good about buying a better one... or may like your freebie so much you don't want to upgrade!

Great idea on the freebie stuff! I'm sure that if I drive around (or better yet, run around) my village, and villages nearby, I would find a free one. Or one that's being sold at a garage sale at a much lower price. And in the meantime that I don't find one yet, I could continue running around!

hi bounce I think you would have th e motivation and seeing it there would ,make you feel guilty so you would use it but please get some instruction on it before you use it. a few years ago my son who was wo rking at the time put in electoring guts in guess what treadmills and he had to train a new fellow worker. He suggested when testing the treadmill to see if they had done a good job putting in the electronic parts that he turn it onto medium. the new guy laughed at him, turned it on super high, it tossed him off of the machine and he sprained an ankle. My son the rascal spent some time laughing at him before he helped him up and went and got the bgss as the new guy was limping so badly .I guess he went to his doctor to have it taped up properly. I wixh I had room for one but I had a pedlar, its one of those little ma chines with pedals that you pedal your feet on it and I am going to get some exercise oln it each day. I think you have the motivation bounce and it wo uld take the place of jogging and running. actually some doctors say the treadmill is easier on your kneew than jogging. good luck. bounce I know you can do it lol

Thanks for the vote of confidence Hatley. I know that guilt would be part of the motivation to go use it, if I ever did get one. I wouldn't be able to stand seeing it in the house, and not use it. And I'll make sure I read the instructions first. Or test it while leaning on something, before I jump right into it.

It would be easier if you had access to one all the time. I think that it boils down to getting in the habit of doing it. I don't think it would do me any good to get one. I would be like...oh..I'll start tomorrow..or darn..I don't have time today..lol.

But how do you get that habit? Of doing it all the time. Wouldn't having the treadmill there push you to start running. I'm sure I would. Specially if they paid a lot to get that treadmill

I do not own a treadmill but exactly a year ago this month I bought an Healthrider exerplay, whoot whoot!! I was not big in any way, I decided I needed to simply take better care of myself. So I went ahead and bought this really expensive bike. Which now is a big part of my life. I have lost 60 pounds and am so in shape it is not funny. Everyone who knows me wondered why I decided to lose weight and well let's just say it is a great stress reliever. Jillian Michaels whips my bee hind, as her voice on the controller controls the pedals. I love my bike.

Heatlh Rider ExerPlay - I so love my bike
Absolutely this is the one I have, you can play video games. Listen to your iPod through the console speakers and manage your hurt rate just by holding the handle bar. It is a nifty bike, and I love it. Oh best feature you put the sm card into the console and Jillian Michaels voice controls the peddles so there is not cheating. I love my bike.

I have never had a treadmill, but I do have a stationary bike at home, and I use it when I watch tv. I think it is a good investment, since seeing it always reminds me to use it. If I didn't have it at home, I would probably not do anything at all when I use it, so it was worth it for me. But don't spend too much money on a treadmill, there are many good, cheap options out there too. Or you can buy a used one! Most work out machines are the same no matter how much you pay for them, so there is really no reason to get the most expensive ones!

Great tip puccagirl! And I especially like the idea of putting it in front of the TV. At least it'll give me something to do while watching, instead of just sitting in front of the couch. Thanks!

We have a treadmill and we all got excited when it was new, many members of the family are running and getting exercise. After a few weeks, I'm the only one left using the treadmill. Then weeks later, I rarely use it not because I got lazy, it's because I'm losing weight fast. I kind of got addicted to running at the treadmill. It boils down to the person. If he is concerned with his health, he will have no excuse not to use the treadmill.

Hello heplock9891. Well I hope that I will be that kind of person. That I will still continue using it even if others loose interest in it. Thanks for the response.

It will be a fortune pi$$ed away if you are not motivated ! If you are not ready to take a run , all a treadmill will be is another clothes rack! Take it slow.Plan a walk around the block or around your local mall, with the mall you don't have the bad weather excuse! And then try a run.The Only reason to get a treadmill is that you already run but you can't because of weather , like snow and ice , Or your neighborhood isn't safe.

Great idea about the mall sarah. A few years ago, when I used to live in Asia, I realized that the mall was really a big part of the culture there. People did everything in the mall. Aside from the usual stuff, people get government licenses, heard church-masses, and even did exercises inside. I use to see a bunch of people wearing running outfits run around the mall just before it opens(that was when we had bowling tournaments in the mall which required us to be there really early in the morning).

I don't really have any exercise instrument at home but I used to play sports a lot, especially basketball, I'm not buffed though. As a matter of fact, I am the very opposite, thin and not muscular at all. Anyway, I think that having a treadmill could somehow help, I mean if part of the reason you don't want to jog is because you want to avoid heat, dust, and the possibility of unexpected accidents then you'd definitely feel safer at home on a treadmill. The key, though is motivation and will power. All the instruments in the world will not help unless one has truly willed to use them as they are supposed.

Hahaha! Then I guess you have to form a new equation. One that probably involves I should 'coz I want to and/or I don't care 'coz I've got to...

Hello choybel. Unfortunately, that heat, dust, and possibility of unexpected accidents form the basis of my excuse not to go running. So, I wonder if I take that out of the equation, how much motivation and will power will I have. Thanks.

I dont know really for me it might motivate me. I have a hard time getting motivated to exercise simply because instead of exercising I could be sitting here earning money instead of doing sit ups and cardio etc. My house is to small to have a treadmill so its really out of the question even if I was able to get one for free I would have no where to put it.

Well reading a book and using a treadmill would be kind of hard but not impossible. When my daughter was a baby I used to take her for walks and read a book as I was pushing her around. There is no way it would be possible to type on a computer and to use a treadmill at the same time BUT lol if there was then yes that would get me using the treadmill for sure! I dont watch tv so thats not something I would do while using a treadmill.

But what if you get a treadmill, or a stationary bike with a place for a computer? So that while you're working around online, your legs would be working out. Not even sure it that was possible, but what if? Would you then get one? Some of the responses here said they would watch TV, or read a book while doing it, so maybe you could also work on the computer.

Oh my gosh I just have to throw this in there that when I posted my response it came up asking me if I would like to add the topic exercise to the interest category things I want to do with my life. Thats so funny. I thought exercise would be in with hobbies but yeah for many people that is something we would like to do... exercise.

Yep, 'would' and 'want', but I'm sure not everybody is following through. Specially me. That's why I have this discussion, so it may change to 'need' to do. Thanks again.

I certainly can't speak from experience when it comes to a treadmill, but I have a stationary bike in my house and right now it is used for a toy for my children much more frequently than I use it. I don't really think that having a treadmill in your house for use at your convenience would really make that much of a difference if you can't get out to jog or run right now without it. Now, once you get into a routine it might be a great idea to have one available to use.

But the thing is, how do I get to that routine? I gotta start somewhere. And I'm afraid that I would only start if I have one in the house. Specially that it's getting a bit colder outside. I'm hoping that seeing it inside would push me to start. I'll buy it, and then cross my fingers.

I have no exercise equipment, but wish that I did. I think I'd like either a treadmill or bike, as long as it had a place to read a book. I'd combine esercise and reading and maybe look and/or feel better and read more too!

A couple of discussions up there, it was suggested that I put the treadmill (or stationary bike) in front of a TV. I thought that it was a good idea. This would be another great idea to let your mind do some 'exercising' too by reading while your body does the workout. Thanks abitosunshine. And hello dismalgrin!

I think getting a treadmill - or a stationary bike, as everyone apparently likes - is a good idea. My brother got himself a treadmill over the summer, which I have fully taken advantage of. Sure, time goes by where no one uses it. But it's really the most convenient thing when you get in the mood to exercise. Then I don't have the excuse of it being too cold out, or the gym being too far away, and I really get things done. Just try to get into the habit of running if you do get it. I used to hate running, and now that I've gotten into the habit of exercising, I love it. Especially if I can have loud music or a tv nearby.

That's what I'm thinking. If I could get a treadmill or a stationary bike at home, I could start prepping it up with a TV in front or a loud radio on the side. To make me more motivated to use it. Even if it's cold or running outside. Thanks for dropping by.

I had a stationary bike a few years ago. I feel like ultimately it ends up being up to you and your motivation to do it. I would love to have a tredmill though, especially since it's coming into winter - and it's going to be impossible to walk outside (at least where I'm at) because it'll be snowy and freezing and horrible. But again.. I had a bike, and I used it MAYBE once a week. Not nearly enough considering how much I paid for it at the time. But I do know a lot of people who's exercise equipment simply gathers dust in their basement. So I think it's up to personal motivation.

I'm afraid that having it might be a negative point too. I may think that since I have it in the house, and I could use it anytime, I could also just postpone using it anytime. I guess this is one reason most exercise machines gather dust in people's homes. So where can I buy that personal motivation-thing?

i have a treadmill,i thought it would be a fabulous idea as i'm ill and can't exercise much as it makes me feel ill,so if i was at home while exercising and felt ill then i could just flop on the couch,i've hardly used it as it made me feel too ill,i haven't been on it for about a year now but i think i'll try again

Hello doormouse. I know that it's a bit different for you because you're going through some physical challenges, but I hope this little reminder of a discussion of mine will help encourage you to go walking on the treadmill again. Slowly, until it's easy again. Wish you well.

Hi bounce, I don't own a treadmill, but I still run and get in my cardio. If you had a treadmill it won't make a difference. The only difference is gonna be the expense of owning one. lol ~Paul

Hello Paul. You sound like a person who has a lot of drive. To go running, and getting your exercises. That's very admirable. And the thought that you didn't need to buy a treadmill is also great. Thanks for the response.

ummm good question! It would all depend on your drive. I have a family member and a friend who both has treadmills. and well, neither of them use their all that much. so i think it all depends on how much you are trying to get physically fit. good luck!

That's what I am afraid of. That even though I feel I have the drive to use it and get physically fit, I may fizzle out after a while. And the treadmill might just end up as a big eye sore wherever I put it. Not to mention a waste of money buying it. Thanks!
