What's worse? To wear formal shoes when everybody else doesn't or the opposite?

Both have happened to me and I don't really know which one made me more embarrassed. I usually try to dress accordingly, depending on where I will be going but sometimes the unexpected kicks in and I end up being like a fish out of water. Sometimes I'm extremely well dressed and all the other guests show up in bleached jeans and plain T shirts...and some others I dress up casually and everyone else turns up dressed in gowns and tuxes. Miscalculations or changes of plans happen once in a while but which one makes you feel worse? For me it will have to be the latter. I feel like I'm somehow inferior when my attire is significantly cheaper and simpler than others'. If I'm very well dressed when other people aren't, I can make up an excuse (e.g. I was invited to a wedding earlier) and everything would be OK. But if everyone in the room is nicely dressed and I'm not, I feel like the maid or something. How about you?

my opinion is that if you're wearing what makes you happy, it doesn't matter what everyone else is wearing. seriously do you judge what you wear against everyone else? if you leave the house happy with your clothing, why let what someone else wears make you feel bad?

I'm happy with almost all my clothing but I want to be dressed right for each occasion. So it's not really a matter of judgment, it's matter of feeling appropriately dressed.

I think I would rather be overdressed than under-dressed in my opinion. I don't know why this is, but although it might be embarrassing - I don't think it can really badly reflect upon you (whereas dressing down when it's black-tie or something may have some negative impact on your life). I don't know though, I don't think I've been in either situation, really.
