i've been ill for 6 years and unable to work for nearly that whole time, the doctor said i had a choice, work or look after my home and family coz i wouldn't be able to do both,so i obviously chose my home and family,i've never been able to claim any benefits as apparantly i'm well enough to work even though i am in pain every day and extremly tired plus lots more symptoms, sometimes unable to leave the house, but it has got to the point where we are soo skint that we struggle to afford to pay our bills every month,so i've decided to try to go back to work even if it leaves me really ill, what else can i do,my boyfriend can't afford to keep me and the kids much longer, and even though i get child tax credit and maintenance from my ex(which is anything from £200-450)it's just not enough, and my partner wants to retire in the next 5 years,,my mum and boyfriend don't think i should do it,but what choice do i have

My dad was under 3 different people todo with his heart and other major parts of his body and he was working as a security guard, because he could walk, drive etc he was unable to get dla, even when he collapsed and had been put into a coma,he still could not claim, after the coma he had no strength to walk etc. Then he was told he had 13 weeks to live, then he could claim terminal benefit, sad but true. His condition he had with his heart is hereditory, also he had a triple bypass, swollen heart, leaky heart valves, fluid build up etc.So even with all that my dad could not claim dla and he even took them to a TRIBUNERAL.The way they see peoples cases are if they can drive, walk more than a certain amount,go shopping,do housework,no confirmed clinical diagnosis,no constant appointments as in every month or week to see a hospital aswell as a gp,you are then classed well enough for work.

The dr at the hospital also done a report, but when that went in it was too late as my dad was then classed as terminal. My dad done security guard work for a whole year when he could not do it anymore then it was sad for him,as he had paid into the system all his life and what for keep the dole lights in money if you ask me.Shame you could not be on income suport, lol, mind you they are cutting their money and other things now.I hope you checked the site that i sent you as they swear by what they use to treat their patients,if it helps getting you out of pain, its worth it.Why dont you see if you can get a job where you can drive, like deliver goods, home care where as some companys are really good.I loved doing home care aswell, as nursing homes, shame wont be able to ever do that again though.Parcel delivery jobs as they use their cars,i know that meals on wheels is great aswell, thats near where you are i think now.

It also seems that it pays to be on income suport, aswell as have a council house,as that way the gov pays for any adaptions that you need done to your house, where as if you work aswell as own your own house you have to pay.Mind you the gov are now realising that there are people that are on income suport that are milking the system and they are now stopping aswell as halving their benefits,so there is some justice now.

i can do most things but it causes me a great deal of pain, all they ask is,does doing so and so cause you pain, destress blah blah blah, and mine does cause pain,i can walk but i am in pain, same with cleaning etc,and i can't do any of it for too long as i get very tired,,i don't have any hospital apps as there is nothing that can be done for my conditions, basically i have to put up and shut up,,,,your poor dad,the way they treated him was disgusting,i hope you made a complaint,as he was one of the genuine ones who really needed it

If your doctor himself told you that you could not work and keep house, surely he would have been willing to sign the necessary forms! Our benefits system sure leaves a GREAT deal to be desired! One excellent young lady I worked with once, who ENJOYED working and WANTED to work had to give it up because, as a single mum with a three year old, she would get more in benefits if she didn't work than she could working (and paying for child care). She was NOT the kind who wanted to be a leech on society but it was just worth an extra £1000 a year to her to stop working. That was just crazy ... but I couldn't blame her one bit! I wish you luck finding work that will suit you, dear Doormouse. Perhaps just getting out of the house for a day or so a week will give you new life, though. It certainly does that for me.

the system is rubbish, the DWP don't always take the gp's comments into account they like to perform their own medical assesment, and if you don't have a consultant or specialist then you're pretty much fu**ed,and the conditions i have there is no treatment for so i don't have a specialist or anything like that,,i've just this minute applied for a job at our local hospital as a ward phlebotamist, doubt i'll get it though

My brother has got himself a job that allows him to work the times or hours that are ok for him,as other times he is unable to work due to the meds that he is on,so he got this job with help from a specialist where he was diagnosed, that was through the hospital. Also i know that there are more training things that are about that ease people back into work,as i have a good friend that has ME,she also works at the hospital, whaere she went to get diagnosed through one of their departments.

I am pleased to see, Doormouse, that you have applied within the NHS. At least you will be there most likely to get the understanding and consideration from your bosses that you deserve and will, at least, be in the right place when you do fall over because you are sick! (Sorry, I am not callous ... my daughter works for the NHS and has a really understanding and supportive boss who fully understands and allows for her health-related problems!)

I am SO soory, doormouse! It is difficult sometimes to work when one is healthy, much more when there is an illness. What are your ailments? Why can´t they be cured? Does your illness have a name, at least? How old are your children? So many questions, yet let´s hope that when you answer some we will be able to help you a bit. There are people here that earn enough online depending on the country they live. Take care!

It is sad that you're forced to work in order to provide for your family and pay the bills, knowing that you have to endure a certain amount of pain. I don't know what to say. I just hope that you find a job that wouldn't cause you more pain, yet good enough to make ends meet. Goodluck!

I hate to see you do it, but I guess it is worth a try. You may just end up quitting again. I do not know what to tell you for sure. If you attempt to work and find you must quit, perhaps you will then qualify for benefits. Is there no way to cut your bills? I know it is a rough economy.

doormouse why on earth does not your doctor sign something so you can get benefits and stay home as this sounds awful for you to work and be in pain

because i don't have constant gp visits as there is nothing they can do for me,i just put up with the pain and every other symptom i have,so my gp does'nt have any grounds to agree to sign the paperwork

How about this: Go back to work. Do the best you can but don't kill yourself doing it. This might sound funny but maybe a bit of work will make you feel better. Got family. Everyone can help around the house. Put your toe in the water. It might not be so bad.

this is what i'm going to try,i applied for a job last night at our local hospital as a ward phlebotomist,i will have a bit of training and then take peoples bloods on the wards, that does'nt sound too tiring, the big thing is getting the kids and my man to help round the house, coz they're all useless at cleaning

That is definitely not a position that I would want to be in. I know that I've been lucky to be able to stay at home with my children for the past four years and it is only because my husband doesn't want my children to be in daycare. That said, I think that if you have to work to make ends meet because you don't qualify for disabiility, it is really the only choice that you can make. Perhaps by working the government will see that you need to have disability, but if not, at least you might be able to make ends meet for a while.

Hi doormouse, its so sad to hear about your health condition, i can't imagine how hard it is when the bills are coming and you have to worry where to get the money to pay those. What i can say is, if your doctor advise you not to work then maybe you have to follow him. He knows more of your condition and your capacity to do a job. How about working on line, maybe you could apply to jobs on line that could cover the cost of your monthly bills. Working on line won't make you go out of the house and work 8 to 5. I pray that you will get better, just hold on to God, he makes miracles you know. God Bless!

It is so rough these days to survive, this I know as I was a truly career woman and this year was left in the dark with absolutely no income and or benefits of any kind. I would say maybe find something you can devote a few hours a couple times a week and then see how that goes. As if your doctor says you are unable to work not only will you then quit a full time job but feel yet even more worse than you do now. Good luck to you, as I had said I do know what it is like to have absolutely no income, and a wonderful boyfriend who cannot afford to take care of me. God Bless honey.

If your doctor said that you are unable to return to work, then what they do is sign you off from work and then you get to claim benefits there and then from that day.I bet you are pleased that the dr did not sign you off, as you now have a job and can do lots of hours. Also the walking that you do in your job, must also help with weight loss, as you were last saying about going on a diet, as you were not able to exercise, due to your health problem.
