Is the end of operating system near?

If all the applications can be reached vie internet, would we need for a complex O/S as we know it? I think the o/s will shrink to a minimum as a lot of applications would be no longer available on local desktops. That way manufactures would have control of who is using their product and they can dictate the way they want it. And no more problem with piracy and so. And no more o/s crashes on local pc's. Remember computers and mainframes with dummy terminals 30-40 years ago, that is where we will be heading in next 10-20 years.
