Almost a disaster!

I am cooking a Cottage Pie for dinner tonight and was going to use some beer in the fridge to make some stock. Good job I checked because it is Banana Bread beer and the whole thing would have tasted of bananas.
I suppose I could have pretended it was a Heston Blumenthal recipe!
Have you ever had a close call like that or used the wrong ingredient and ended up witha strange dinner?

Hi,
I have done cooking for my family for few years and
glad that so far, I never added wrong ingredients in my cooking
and I hope this won't happen to me too.
But my mother did one big mistake last time.
He was putting some washing plate detergent into soft boiled egg and
this soft boiled egg is supposed for my brother.
My mother was pouring the detergent into the bowl and only then
she realized that she took wrong bottle from the tray.
Lucky, my brother never eat that soft boiled egg yet,or else,
he may end up having stomach ache.

The latest in a long series of "almost disasters" was when I grabbed the powdered sugar instead of corn starch when I was making turkey gravy. I had put both of them in jars because the boxes always get ragged. Anyway, I kept putting more in and wondering why it wouldn't thicken! Actually, it didn't taste all that bad; a little sweet and kind of runny, but not bad.
