What Caused the FDA to Reverse Its Ban on Silicone Breast Implants?

A leading article in today's "New York Times" concerns the FDA's removal of its 14 year ban on silicone breast implants. I find the reversal of positions odd, especially since we all were witnesses to a popular star's experience with silicone implants.
Do you think the FDA caved in to pressure from corporate lobbyists and reversed its decision to appease the manufacturers of the implants?

Probably there was pressure -- it wouldn't be the first time this FDA ignored science to appease lobbyists. I'm not familiar with all the research however, so it is possible they are "safe", in spite of all the women who have become sick from leaking implants.

I agree.
Apparently, they have enclosed the silicone in a thicker sac which is supposed to prevent leakage. However, we all know sometimes things don't work like they are supposed to for whatever reason.
