How can we prevent our accounts from being hacked by anyone?

Recently one of my friend's gmail account was hacked and he has all his data in this particular gmail account stored. He was so shocked and has tried all ways and methods to recover but of no use. At the same time some of his earning site accounts and also alert pay account was hacked. Thank God, he had no money in his alert-pay but on the whole he had a bad day that day. I am also worried about the same now and has got in my mind so many questions which I thought friends here might help me find a solution for my questions. Here are they: Is hacking a gmail or yahoo account so easy? , What all are the ways that we can prevent someone from accessing our accounts? What all secure measures do you suggest someone like me who has no knowledge about securing my computer.
