i don't like puddings but i had nearly run out of food yesterday and the only thing i could find for a late night snack was a packet of custard mix and a tin of prunes. so i had this, and the same again for breakfast. it wasn't that bad. so what peculiar concoctions have you resorted to eating when it was high time to do the grocery shopping? an over-ripe banana, an onion, and ketchup? a piece of stale bread served with tinned tomatoes? and was it ever anything you would actually choose to eat?

I don't think that would have made anything. I thought that you didn't eat animal products?

I have on stand-by what I hear is a very delicious recipe for rabbit stew that is very easy to make and does not require a ton of ingredients. Fortunately, I have never had to resort to actually making this recipe, though ...

ROTFLMAO! Rabbit stew and custard - now that really does sound like a revolting meal! I think that you have almost convinced me to get rid of this recipe here for good! Do you have any better suggestions for a stand-by recipe? I hear moths might be a good alternative as they are high in protein and low in fat and cholesterol.

Custard and prunes - might be good but I have no personal experience. Your creativity paid off not only once but twice. How often does one get to eat the same thing for nightime snack and breakfast? Sure makes the breakfast decision easy.
Some people like cold pizza, and that would be another food that could fill both late and early timeslots.
The more bizarre the leftovers you are trying to manage with, the more creativity (and sugar) required.

Hey blue bunny, how're you doing? BTW what does P.e. stand for?
I live in a remote village with a cafe that stocks a few staples at extortionate prices. My answer to this is to shop less often and travel further for cheaper prices and better specials and fresher fresh food. Mind you, I don't buy a lot of fresh food because it doesn't last. So saying, I always have bread in the freezer and there's always jams and peanut butter, gherkins, sardines, pickled onions, tomatoes, spuds, onions as well as frozen chips, diced onion and tinned tomatoes...then there are all my herbs and spices and sauces and things like wet garlic in a jar and chilli paste....we could be here all day at this rate..
Bottom line, there are always munchies at my house...there's also dog and cat food....?

i am ten minutes walk from a cheap supermarket so don't really need to stock up. i usually have tins of stuff in and pasta, but they need cooking.
p.e. stands for private eye - very good satirical magazine. mixture of satire, silliness, and some real stories.

oh hi jb yeolde blue bunny When we still were in our apartment I had run out of the foods I usually ate. So searched my pantry a can of Dhef boyardee raviolis and spaghetti o's oh my these were given to me in a care package.Chef Boyardie stuff I would never buy but my best friend's husband gave her a lot of his stuff and she passed it on. I was hungry enough that I heated thet two cans of boyardee and put a lot of cheese in it.,'So It was better than going hungry but just a little bit. Real Ravoli is delicious but canned pasta, yuck. now around christmas time with pumpkin pies and mince pie leftovers if I ran out of breadfast food I just grab of cold slice of pumpkin pie or mince meat pie and some hot coffee and have a great breakfast for sure.and sometimes if I am out of things I usually eat for breakfast there is left over pizza.

I'm such a sensible person, I don't really run out of food :-) There are times when I don't want any of the things I have, but that's mainly because I really want something else and not because I've run out of food. For one, there's nearly a freezer filled with berries. There's soup and pasta. And canned fish in tomato sauce. And if I'm really desperate, I can go to my father (he lives in the same block) and he has enough food to feed a family for several weeks.
Not to mention booze. We both keep buying all we can buy at the taxfree when we travel, and none of us really drink. So in case I didn't have any food I could drown my sorrows in grapes :-)

Hello, Judith. I've been known to eat leftover pasta for breakfast, and cold roast or boiled potatoes are very nice as well. I also like cold sausages for breakfast. And yes, I eat these things from choice. I like custard - especially if it's thick - but I don't think I could face it for breakfast.

I enjoy all kinds of pudding. they shouldn't just be considered a dessert or snack food. I see nothing wrong with having pudding for breakfast. it isn't something I would do all of the time, but i would consider it.

if i liked sweet things i'd agree. some puddings can be quite healthy. anyway i don't like very sugary foods, which is why the custard mix and prunes had been sitting there for so long. (yes you may well ask why i had them in the first place, seemed a good idea at the time)
